[cobirds] Redpolls, Colo Spgs, Saturday
Hi COBirders, A pair of Common Redpolls arrived together for a brief visit at my thistle feeder at about 8:45 this morning, and stayed for about 2 minutes. They may be the same ones as yesterday (probably), although the male today looked lighter in color than I remember from yesterday. [cobirds] Northern Larimer County
I went north of Wellington today to see what might be out and about. Driving along the county roads in north Larimer County yielded very little with a couple of dozen Horned larks and no longspurs. Also there were no Snow Buntings and no Redpolls. On the way back to Fort Collins, I stopped at North Pudre Reservoir #3 and found a bonanza of waterfowl. In amongst the 10,000 or so geese, there were approximately 30 Snow Geese and 3-5 Ross Geese. There were also 10 Swans with the breakdown being 6 Tundra Swans and 4 Trumpeter Swans. At least 4 of the Tundra Swans has yellow towards the base of the bill. I did not spot any Brants or Greater White-fronted Geese. There were also thousands of ducks. Both the geese and the ducks, at one point, got stirred up by an eagle which caused me to lose exact count of the Snow Geese. Incidentally the overlook at the Rawhide Power Plant waa closed. [cobirds] Marston Lake, Denver Cty - New Viewing Spot
Cobirders, The previously reported two White-winged Scoters and the lone Surf Scoter were on Marston Lake this morning at 10 am. I noted recent posts mentioning the lack of viewing opportunities at Marston Lake. There is a little known park at the south end of Marston Lake from which the majority of the south end of the lake can be viewed. There is not a sign at the park, but I think the name may be Isthmus Nature Park or something to that effect. Drive east on Grant Ranch Blvd from Wadsworth Blvd. Continue approximately 1.7 miles to Jay Circle. Proceed north on Jay approximately 0.3 miles and the park will be on your left. This small park does not have a parking lot. However, there are no signs prohibiting parking on Jay Circle or on S Ingalls Street to the north just past the park. Enter the park and head north on the walking trails towards the large, nicely covered, highly elevated gazebo (handicap accessible). Viewing from the gazebo affords good looks of the southern portion of the lake. The mostly inaccessible and fenced off Bowles Reservoir Number One located to the south of Marston can also be viewed in its entirety from the gazebo. This area makes one more appreciative of the use of Colorado Lottery funds! [cobirds] Common Redpoll at Chatfield State Park
This morning I found a nice male Common Redpoll at Chatfield State Park. The bird was just east of the marina in the trees at the base of the marina sandspit. The bird was singing and calling a fair amount. Great photos of this bird were obtained by Glenn Walbek and can be found at: http://www.pbase.com/gwalbek/2012_birds The bird was last seen as it flew west from here. We did not attempt to chase it. The bird was vocalizing from the trees, and would fly to the ground to feed. When on the ground the vocalizations would stop. There were several House Finches in the area as well. [cobirds] Redpolls, White Winged Junco, Estes Park
Two Common Redpolls appeared at my feeders this morning, the first this season. A White Winged Junco has been at the feeders off and on for more than a week along with all the usual juncos. I'm located south of Estes Park in the Little Valley area at 8000 ft. [cobirds] Merlin at Lowell Ponds today
Hi CoBirders I saw a Merlin at Lowell Ponds (Adams Co) today, about 9 am. It was on a pole along the street, north of the ponds. This is the 99th species on the Lowell Ponds list. I had a Sharp-shinned Hawk at my house in north Denver, later in the mourning. [cobirds] Charlie the Lonely Pelican - Baseline Res.
Cobirds: At Baseline Reservoir in Boulder Saturday morning: Charlie the Lonely Pelican could be seen huddled with 7 tundra swans on the south east side, as seen from Cherryvale Road. Alas, I fear Charlie will not make it through Sunday night, as Baseline Res. will probably freeze solid along with other smaller ponds in Boulder County. At CU ponds near the CU Science Research Center, their are about 6 scaup - that may or may not be greater scaup. The nail on the three discernable males is thin - so I'm going with lesser scaup. Somebody prove me wrong, so I can sleep at night. :) Completely off base, but of note for nature lovers: The Great Python Hunt for 2013 in Florida starts on January 12th thru February 15th. Run by the state of Florida Division of Wildlife and supported by various agencies including Everglades National Park (not in the hunt zone), to control the explosion of pythons that are destroying birds, wildlife, and reptiles in south Florida. An invasion of biblical proportions. Google it in - very interesting reading. [cobirds] Jumbo Res to Prewitt Res Today
Greetings All, Today David Dowell and I visited Little Jumbo Res (Logan), Jumbo Res (Logan/Sedgwick), N Sterling Res (Logan) and a wee bit of the town of Sterling. Highlights (rarities) were Snow Bunting (on shore of Sedgwick portion of Jumbo Reservoir; the point that sticks into reservoir from w. side) Am Black Duck x Mallard (Sedgwick side, se. corner of reservoir, flew to ne. corner) Brown-headed Cowbird (2) - farm at bend in Co Rd 25 just where spur to Logan access of Prewitt is. Also Prairie Merlin here Double-crested Cormorants, multiples at Jumbo Res (both counties), Little Jumbo Res, N Sterling Res, Prewitt Res Am White Pelican 50 at Prewitt Res. G White-fronted Goose (11) at Prewitt Res Lesser Black-backed Gull (1st year) at N Sterling Res. Numbers Snow Goose: approx 17,000 at Jumbo and 13,000 at Prewitt Lesser Canada Goose: approx 9000 at N Sterling Res and 21,000 at Prewitt Res Mallard: approx 15,000 at Jumbo Res Lapland Longspur: about 250 in roads just s. of N Sterling Res. Staggering numbers, numbing mind to estimate/count. Of great interest was a near total lack of Ross's Geese and very low numbers of Cackling Geese, very different from last year. We also FAILED to find a SINGLE redpoll (or a flock :o) nor any Bohemian Waxwings, though we did find Cedars in Sterling. Gull numbers were exceptionally low at all locations Good Birding Steven Mlodinow Longmont CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
