[cobirds] Long-tailed Duck and Tundra Swan
I was birding yesterday with Joey Kellner and Lathy Mihm-Dunning in northeastern Colorado yesterday. With the snow cover, we cruised roads in Sedgwick, Logan, Morgan and Weld counties looking for longspurs. Horned Lark flocks were numerous on the roads with the snow covering the fields, There were several encounters with Lapland Longspurs. At Jumbo Reservoir there was a female long-tailed duck and 7 double-crested cormorants. North Sterling Reservoir had 40 double-crested cormorants and 60 American White Pelicans. Jackson Reservoir had a Tundra Swan. A late Rock Wren was seen on the north shore. [cobirds] They're baa-ack: Boulder Swamp Sparrows
Hello, Birders. A few minutes ago, whilst running around Waneka Lake and thinking about a talk I'll be giving in a couple of weeks, I was roused from my reverie by the unmistakable CHIP! of a Swamp Sparrow. I slowed down, but didn't stop, pished, and up popped the bird. The bird was in the little cattail marsh (duh) along the edge of the west side of the lake. Although Swamp Sparrows are absent much of the year from Colorado, and hard to find even during most of the period they're here, they are completely reliable in the Front Range metro region in late November. [cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler Centennial Park Arapahoe County
Cobirders, The Prothonotary Warbler previously reported by Art Hudak was seen again this morning, most recently at 11:15 am. From either the southeast or west parking lots follow the paved path around the small reservoir to north side the where the path bends ninety degrees and there is a gazebo with a picnic table. It is the only structure in the area. From the path by the gazebo, look opposite the water to the northeast into the trees around the oxbow. Looking down there are two small trees (appears to be a type of hawthorn) loaded with large berries. The bird will fly in and feed for a while and then fly directly north and into the denser stand of larger trees with a choke cherry understory. The bird can be amazingly stealthy and simply disappear and then reappear fifteen minutes or so later in the hawthorn trees. There is also a Swamp Sparrow that has been seen along the water's edge in this area as well. To all: The Prothonotary Warbler was still at Centennial Park as of about 11AM. [cobirds] Colorado CBC dates
Hi all, Is there a site that provides a list of the Christmas Bird Counts in Colorado this year, in chronological order? The Audubon site provides a really nice map of the Colorado counts, but frustratingly it does not indicate *when* any of the counts are. I would just like a short, succinct schedule of the counts because that is how I can make plans for where I might be able to help out. [cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler
Nice find, Art Hudak, on the Prothonotary Warbler. This is perhaps a cherry on top of the November warbler parade in Colorado, which by my count now totals at least 13 species (Tennesee, Orange-crowned, Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Pine, Palm, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Prothonotary, Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, and Wilson's). Intrigued by Steve and Cheryl's reports of hawthorn, chokecherry (its fruits should be long gone or dried up by this date but it could have lingering aphids), or some other woody berry plant being involved in the diet of this Prothonotary, I check the BNA account. There is one winter diet study in Panama that listed fruit as making up 10% of the diet. I would really appreciate confirmation this bird is, indeed, eating fruit and what kind of fruit it is. [cobirds] FCAS Field Trip: 1 day, 6 geese (LARIMER and WELD)
This morning's Fort Collins Audubon Society field trip was focused on ducks and geese. With an emphasis on geese! Our group of 8 managed to locate 6 geese species in one morning: Canada, Cackling, Snow (almost 50, light and dark phases), Ross' (1), Greater White-fronted (1), and Brant (1, continuing at Houts Reservoir in Loveland). Windsor Reservoir, viewed close-up from an FCAS member's private residence (THANKS!!!), yielded all of these except Brant. [NOTE: No swans this morning at Houts.] Duck variety was perhaps slightly less than I expected, but we did (barely) reach double digits. No rarities to report. Other highlights: A beautiful female harrier harassed in flight by 3 crows, and a pair of American Pipits on the west shore of Timnath Reservoir. About 40 species in total. [cobirds] WW Scoter and more, Delta Co.
I decided it would not be safe to attempt the Black Mesa highway drive with the overnight snowstorm. We will try to make it to Blue Mesa Reservoir nest Sat (Nov 30). Five birders from Paonia did make it to several Delta Co waterbodies this morning and there were several interesting species. Best was a White-winged Scoter at Confluence Park. Also present were 17 Ross's Geese, 2 Common Loons, and one Bonaparte's Gull. At the 1250 Road just south of Hwy 50 were many Sandhill Cranes, 8 Wilson Snipes, and 2 shorebirds that we weren't certain about (peep-sized). Sweitzer had 3 Common Loons and several duck hunters so not much else. At Fruitgrowers were several Western Grebes. Many Common Goldeneyes were seen but no Barrow's Goldeneye. Also, this morning in my yard was a late Wilson's Warbler. [cobirds] pheasant, snow goose - Louisville CO
Cobirds: Female ringed necked pheasant seen crossing four lanes of traffic at South Boulder Road and Barcelona Drive in Louisville at 12 noon today. The bird was road savvy and crossed when no cars were coming. Pretty slick. This may be part of a remnant group of pheasants that has been hanging in this area for years. Snow goose seen with hundreds of cackling and Canada geese at the Louisville golf course. The golf course is officially closed, but you can work the perimeter and scope out the ponds and fairway. There have been conflicting reports about when the golf course may open depending on the source. The last thing I saw was a report in the Daily Camera saying that the contractor had been fired and the City of Louisville may or may not repair the flood damage by 2014 summer, or beyond. In the meantime, the wildlife have the run of the place. For upcoming xmas counts, for those who are interested: Clark's Nutcrackers continue to be seen in Boulder Mt. Park in small numbers for the last 6 weeks. Some areas they were in: Mt. Sanitas, Shannahan Ridges, Third and Second Flatiron, Shadow Canyon, and Mallory Cave Trails. (maybe someone can tell me what the heck they are eating). Bushtits are seen along the Nighthawk trail at Hall Ranch Open Space near Lyons (now open for hiking). Look at the parking lot and up higher, especially in juniper / mountain mahogany habitat. Ditto same area for tree sparrows, chickadees, and house finches. Scrub jays seen frequently at the Bear Creek trailhead (still closed) off of Bear Creek Drive neighborhood in Boulder. Also seen regularly in the Shannahan Ridge neighborhoods near Tincup and Hardscrabble Roads adjoining Mt parks properties. Sharp shined and coopers hawks keep popping up at bird feeding stations in Louisville and Boulder. If the small birds are freaked out - somebody's after them. Townsend's solitaires have come down to lower elevations and should not be hard to find anywhere along the front range now. Singing canyon wrens and the occasional late rock wren in Boulder Mt. Park. Some flowers (amazingly) still blooming: rabbit brush, white aster, seneco, and dandelion. [cobirds] Wild Turkeys, Boulder County
Hello birders, Barb and I headed to the mountains today in search of winter birds. Didn’t see much in Ward, but in Allenspark at the Fawn Brook Inn we enjoyed seeing a flock of about 30 Evening Grosbeaks. Also present were Steller’s Jays, Clark’s Nutcracker, nuthatches, chickadees, house finch, and a murder of crows. Thought I heard rosy-finch at one point but could not find them. Then in strolled a group of eight Wild Turkeys to eat bird seed in a wooden tub set out by Hermann and Mieke Goicher, owners of the inn. Turkeys are not known for their intelligence, but to stroll up to a restaurant five days before Thanksgiving—come on guys! We said hello to Hermann and donated to his generous bird seed and hummer sugar-water budget. http://www.fawnbrookinn.com/ The road from Boulder to Ward is finally open after the September flood, but one lane dirt in spots—they’re still repairing it. We saw a couple of old school buses tossed helter-skelter next to a creek-side cabin, one of many ruined structures. On our way home we drove down the Big Thompson road between Estes Park and Loveland, just opened Thursday. (More vulture tourism.) The devastation was extensive. Many condemned houses by the river--tilting, undermined, collapsed, all marked by a red x. One minute slideshow here: http://bit.ly/1bLDTA4 A safe and happy Thanksgiving to all! RE: [cobirds] Re: Prothonotary Warbler
Rob, et al, Yes, European Buckthorn. I agree that is what all the pics people have been sending seem to show the bird is eating. Yes, it is widely planted, and yes, it escapes, gets spread, definitely deserves the moniker of invasive exotic. Thanks to all who have sent me photos. Interesting situation. Birds do what they have to do. Insects are probably what these neotropical migrants want as a first choice, but in a pinch the Ovenbird in Bill's yard and this Prothonotary clearly prove they can handle millet and fruit, respectively, and probably a lot of other things if they get desperate enough.
