[cobirds] Rough-legged Hawk BoulderCounty

2014-02-04 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
A lovely mature Rough-legged Hawk has been hanging out all winter between
Airport Road and N. 75th, west of Longmont on the north side of Nelson Road,
between Amgen and Seagate. Sometimes, it's extremely close to the road. Other
times, it's in the small riparian area that runs north of those two complexes,
accessible from both the east and west.

[cobirds] CFO Winter Field Trip: Red Rocks And Beyond

2014-02-04 Thread Christian Nunes
Dear birders,
There are still some spaces (n=4) open on the Colorado Field Ornithologists'
Winter Field Trip: Red Rocks and Beyond which will happen this Sunday, February
9th. Join CFO Director Mike Henwood and Vice President Christian Nunes on this
journey through Front Range foothills and mountain communities in search of
winter finches and other seasonal birds of the area. We will meet at 8:00 am at
the Red Rocks Trading Post and then continue to other sites where winter birds
are showing up. Plan on carpooling to minimize parking needs where space is a
concern and returning to Red Rocks by 1:00 pm. Dress warmly and bring water and
snacks. This trip is limited to 15 participants. Please contact Christian if
you would like to participate.

[cobirds] Golden Jeffco feeder birds, 3 Tree Sparrows

2014-02-04 Thread Kay Niyo
All,

After having only 5-6 House Finches and a pair of loyal flickers at my
feeders since the late-Sept 16+ of rain that I got just north of Golden, I
finally have lots of birds in this past week's storm and today. I just
counted ~50 juncos of all but white-winged subspp, a few House Finches, and
for the first time in 5.5 winters here in Golden, 3 Tree Sparrows coming to
feed for the last 3 days.

I read with interest Bill's president's column in the latest Colorado Birds
about the dearth of small birds since the rains and Steve Jones's article in
the Boulder County Nature Assoc newsletter. Life with hardly any birds at
my feeders for 4 mo in the fall/early winter for the first time in my life
has been spooky and depressing. I have visited with other birds who have
had the same situation. Hope the affected spp can reproduce and
re-establish their populations this spring.

I also just photographed a lovely adult Sharp-shinned Hawk sitting in my
tree; first time I have seen it in a couple months! My feeders were empty
while she was there!

Re: [cobirds] Golden Jeffco feeder birds, 3 Tree Sparrows

2014-02-04 Thread Libby Edwards
Kay and all,
Though we didn't have the devastation that your area did with the flood,
all winter we have consistently had lots of house finches, 3-4 tree
sparrows every day, juncos of all races (no white winged) all the time, and
many American goldfinches also all winter. This mixed in every day
normally with a huge family of flickers (maybe 6 or so), 2 blue jays, 2-3
Steller's jays, house sparrows, a Downy woodpecker, an occasional WB
nuthatch, a family of rabbits, and 3-4 squirrels, and all those doves,
there is quite the activity to watch all winter. Don't despair, we have
seemingly the same number of birds as other years. But this is the first
time we have had the Steller's.
