[cobirds] Ordway stockyard ditch and other areas north of Rocky Ford and La Junta
I birded Friday afternoon in several areas north of Rocky Ford and La Junta including Lakes Meredith, Henry, Holbrook and the Ordway town reservoir--a few shorebirds at the lakes but very few birds at any of these locations. The most shorebirds I found were in the bar ditch adjacent to the Ordway stockyard: 5 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Baird's Sandpipers and a few Killdeer. I saw a couple of dark ibis land south of the stockyard but the settling ponds are no longer visible from the road. White headed gulls were circling the stockyards as usual. Landbirds were in very short supply in several areas with trees and shrubs that I checked. I did see several Burrowing Owls around that have not left including one that was perched close to the road that I was able to get some very close photos (can even see the nares in one pic) that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog. http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/ SeEtta Moss Canon City http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Shorebirds, Crom lake
I am at Crom lake and there are lots of shorebirds! Please take the following list with a grain of salt as shorebirds are not my strong point. Stilt sandpipers – around 20 Avocets – 6 Wilson's phalaropes- 4 Rednecked phalaropes – 2 Least sandpipers Dowitchers. Prairie falcon Robins Barn swallows Canada geese-around 100 My suggestion is to glance at my list and then spend the rest of your time coming out here so you can make up your own mind about which shorebirds are here! I will be eagerly awaiting your post. Carstensen, Littleton, Arapahoe County Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Barr Lake, Adams, Today
Greetings All No spanking major highlights at Barr, but had 80 species in the morn. Water levels are low, so shorebirds are present, and I was actually a tad surprised not to find a jaeger given the number of gulls present. Highlights included 2 Sabine's Gulls (immatures) 1 LBB Gull (adultish thing, present for at least a couple weeks) 2 Lutescent Warblers (western race of OC Warbler; the true status of these is unclear, but the good ones are usually quite obvious in fall, being entirely bright green and yellow). 1 late-ish Orchard Oriole and Willow Flycatcher 1 Hammond's and 1 Least Flycatcher 1 Townsend's Warbler 1 Rock Wren Overall numbers were good with about 20 OC Warblers and 80 Wilson's. 1400 or so DC Cormorants and couldn't pick out a Neotrop. Despite huge breeding success on the w. Gulf Coast, this seems not the year for that species in CO Good Birding Steven Mlodinow Longmont CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Jefferson Co birds 9/15
Near dawn this morning a Burrowing Owl was amid a prairie dog colony in Ken Caryl Valley near the Manor House. It must be a southbound migrant. I looked again this evening but did not see it. A visit to Mother Cabrini Shrine above Golden had good birding, with a Black-and-white Warbler the highlight. Also a Lewis's Woodpecker flew over going south, some Type 2 Red Crossbills in the pines, and a good variety of other species, including a Cassin's Finch. Later a Tennessee Warbler visited my Ken Caryl Valley yard, with a lutescens Orange-crowned close by for a nice comparison. It was sort of like old home week California style for me, as that form of the OCWA is the common one there, and I'd see a one or a few TEWA each fall. It is interesting to me that there are more eastern warblers to be found in CA than here in CO, or maybe it is just that more are found there because there are more birders. Either way, I don't take them for granted, and I enjoy each of the regulars, too!
