[cobirds] Park County Sept 16 (Parasitic, Clay-colored, Sabine's, Sandhill, Black Terns, Common T)

2014-09-17 Thread David Suddjian
My birthday present was a day in the Park, and a lovely day it was, too.
The aspens are coloring up nicely, great clouds, lovely cool early morning
temperatures (32 deg), and great stars before dawn. Fun birds, too.

Daytime birding began with a series of stops along Salt Creek Road (Road
435) off Hwy 285 north of the Hwy 24 junction. I really like birding this
road, and today was especially fun because of large numbers of several
species, and the creekside willows were lively with warblers and sparrows.
The area from 3 to 5 miles in from Hwy 285 was particularly interesting,
and I wish I had more time to go further, but I wanted to get to Antero
Reservoir while it was still early, so I limited my time at Salt Creek
Road. But stops in the area that I did visit had 100s of *Pinyon Jays*,
over 100 *Clark's Nutcrackers*, and 400+ Type 5 *Red Crossbills*. Fruitful
bristlecone pines were the main attractant for these species. Also noted
were several *Gray Jays*, *Am. Three-toed Woodpecker*, *Northern Goshawk*,
2 *Golden-crowned Kinglets*, 3 *Pine Grosbeaks*, *Swainson's Thrush*,
2 *MacGillivray's
Warblers*, and 2 *Townsend's Warbler*. One of the *Orange-crowned Warblers* was
singing repeatedly. Wilson's were common.

Antero Reservoir had some very good birds, but only small numbers of
shorebirds. A light morph adult *Parasitic Jaeger* was flying for several
minutes along the western shore and ranged once to the northwest corner.
Much of the flight was rather high up over the reservoir, and I never saw
it pursue anything (there were no terns, and the gulls were mostly
loafing). After I watched it for about 4 minutes I lost track of it when I
looked away. I don't think it stayed. I had the impression that it had just
arrived on the scene about the time I first saw it, and maybe it took a
look around and kept on going? Also present were at least 3 and maybe
4 *Sabine's
Gulls*. A *Clay-colored Sparrow* was near the parking area at the terminus
of the north boat launch access road (that is, past the launch itself).
This is a pretty good bird for Park, I think. A lone *Sandhill Crane* was
in a field with cows near the beginning of the north launch access road,
just in off Hwy 24 on the east side, between the access road and the Platte.

Shorebirds other than avocets and Killdeer included 30 *Baird's*, 2 *Greater
Yellowlegs*, 1 *Lesser Yellowlegs*, 16 *Western Sandpipers*, 7 *Least*, 53
peep sp., and 5 *Wilson's Phalaropes*. No unusual ducks. Raptors
included 1 *Ferruginous
Hawk*, 2 *Nor. Harriers*, 1 *Peregrine *and two *Prairies*. 3 *Common
Nighthawks* feeding over the water were perhaps late for Park.

From there I went down Hwy 9 to Warmer Gulch WMA near the south county
line. True to its name, it was pretty warm there and bird activity was
reduced. Highlights were 8 *Bushtits*, 4 *Dusky Grouse*, and a *Canyon Wren*.
*Western Scrub-Jays* and *Spotted Towhees* were noted, both being generally
limited to this region of the county in association with the Gambel oaks
near the south county line. Driving down Hwy 9, a *Lewis's Woodpecker* was
in Ponderosa pines not far south of Hartsel.

I arrived at Eleven Mile Reservoir shortly after noon and viewed the whole
lake from various points along the southwest shoreline. Highlights
were 2 *Sabine's
Gulls *(near islands at mid-lake), 3 or 4 *Black Terns*, 1 *Common Tern*
and 1 *Forster's Tern* (no jaegers evident). Coot numbers were up, but not
too many ducks. Ducks of interest were 1 eclipse male *Common Goldeneye*,
and 1 alternate male *Bufflehead*. Few shorebirds (low numbers of Avocet,
Baird's, snipe). The terns and most of the waterfowl were near the
northwest corner. *Western Grebes* were still tending begging young. I did
not look at Spinney, since it was dullsville 2 weeks ago, but I probably
should have.

Tarryall Reservoir had the continuing summering male *Common Goldeneye* and
male *Ring-necked Duck*, as well as 2 new female *Ring-necked Ducks*.

Thanks Christian! It is very helpful to have as much expertise in Colorado as
we do to help us non-experts who sometimes go down the wrong track with an ID.
(Guilty as charged - I had incorrectly thought both Pomeraine and Parasitic
before Long-Tailed).

 Dear Birders,

I went down to the north shore of Boulder Reservoir from around 5:15-6 pm
this evening. For most of the time, the jaeger was sitting on the water just
beyond the buoys. The bird wasn't all that big, noticeably smaller than a
relatively adjacent Ring-billed Gull. The overall color tone was cold,
especially noticeable on the head and neck. In good low afternoon light,
there was sometimes a hint of brown in the head/neck, but it wasn't as
apparent as one would expect on a young Parasitic. It also lacked a pale
crescent above the bill. The bill was slight and tipped with black, and I did
not rely heavily upon the gray/dark ratio or bill shape at such a distance.
There are better field marks to focus on. The back, scapulars, and wing
coverts were all dark with pale yellowish tips, giving the bird a
well-patterned look. The primaries were solid black with no pale tips. The
under tail coverts were pale, almost white, with black bars. The wings were
very long, extending well past the tip of the tail while sitting on the
water. While floating, the caboose rode high in the water, and combined with
the small size it gave the bird a very dainty and Sabine's Gull-esque feel.

Eventually, the bird took off and made a few wide circles fairly close to the
shore. In flight, one very bright white primary shaft was apparent, with a
second fainter shaft being just visible. The rest of the flight feathers were
distinctly dark from above. The auxilaries below were patterned with
black-and-white, with no noticeable color. The belly was the palest part of
the undercarriage, with the head and chest being darker and the barred under
 tail coverts contrasting as well.

All of these details make me settle upon a juvenile intermediate-morph
LONG-TAILED JAEGER as the likely identification. No photos to corroborate,
 but maybe others obtained some.

 Thanks,

At Boulder Res right now and Jaeger took flight towards SE corner. Looks to
be a Juv Pomeraine Jaeger based on rounded tail, bulky bill, and noticeable
hook to bill but didn't see it in flight long enough to see
 underwing/upperwing clearly.

Would appreciate clarification from anyone else who sees it.

near where the bridge crosses the creek/river, on September 10.
--Dowell reports a juvenile JAEGER at Boulder Reservoir on 9/16, an
intermediate morph. The jaeger ID itself has morphed from Parasitic to
Pomarine, then closer views led to the ID of Long-tailed Jaeger (Nunes).
Jaeger ID is tough. So is empid ID, but at least empids don't sit on the
water a half mile away. Also Sabine's Gulls.

*COSTILLA COUNTY: *Rawinski reported a trio of Sabine's Gulls at Smith
Reservoir SWA, near Blanca, on September 14.

*DENVER: *Alec Hopping reported a Caspian Tern at Marston Reservoir, flying
southeast toward Chatfield SP on September 14 and a Sabine's Gull at
Marston on September 15.

*EL PASO COUNTY:*
--Peterson reports an ARCTIC TERN at Big Johnson Reservoir, on September 8,
in low light. Bill Maynard saw the bird today (9/9) and confirmed it as an
ARCTIC TERN. The ARCTIC TERN was seen by Walbek and others from 11am til
noon on September 9. B. Maynard reports seeing the ARCTIC TERN at Big
Johnson on the opposite side of the reservoir where an island is seasonally
located. Scope for viewing desirable. The Lesser Black-backed Gull
continues at Big Johnson Reservoir.
--Drummond reports a BLUE-HEADED VIREO at the Cassita, at Chico Basin
Ranch, fee area, on September 13.
--A BAIRD'S SPARROW was found by Aaron Driscoll on Drennan Road on August
26. Many individuals have since reported up to 4 BAIRD’S SPARROWS near the
intersection of Drennan and Hemingway (this area is southeast of Colorado
Springs). On Sept. 7, Mlodinow reports 3 ad. Baird’s Sparrows within 45
mins. before reaching the 90-degree bend in Drennan Road, there was 1
cooperative ad. Baird’s Sparrow on Drennan Rd. just east of that 90 degree
bend. No subsequent news either way.

*JEFFERSON COUNTY:*
--A Ruby-throated Hummingbird was reported by Sanders on September 12, at
this home. During the quick looks he had of the bird, he observed a red
gorget, but it was a little different hue than the usual male Broad-tailed
Hummingbird. Contact him via email (zroadrunne...@gmail.com) if you want to
try to see the bird; visitors are welcome.
--A Black-and-White Warbler was reported on September 15 by Suddjian at the
Mother Cabrini Shrine above Golden.

*LARIMER COUNTY:*
--A PARASITIC JAEGER was reported by Komar at Timnath Reservoir on
September 13. The jaeger was not seen on the morning of September 14, nor
on September 15, but is to be looked for on large lakes farther south.
-- On September 14, Komar reported several tern species at Boyd Lake,
including FOUR ARCTIC TERNS. Helpful details are in Nick's post to CObirds
at 10 last evening. Seen again by Komar on 9/15. A first-cycle ARCTIC TERN
was reported from there by Walbek on 9/16.
An adult LONG-TAILED JAEGER was found by Bankert on September 15 at Boyd
Lake. Komar and others saw it that evening.

*PARK COUNTY:*
-- A PARASITIC JAEGER was reported on 9/16 by Suddjian. 2 Sabine's Gulls
were there too.

*PUEBLO COUNTY:*
--A PINE WARBLER was reported by Percival on September 13, east of the
Osprey Picnic area on the North side of the Arkansas River, below Pueblo
Reservoir dam.

*WASHINGTON COUNTY:*
--Walbek reported a CANADA WARBLER from Crow Valley Campground on Sept 14
in the west ditch.

*WELD COUNTY:*
--1 Eastern Wood-Pewee was reported by Mlodinow at Pawnee National
Grassland--Crow Valley Campground on September 5. Heard on September 9 by
Leatherman, probably the same individual.
-- On September 16 Hess reported seeing a Black-throated Green Warbler at
Crow Valley Campground on September 13.

The jaeger flew in to the middle of the reservoir from the east about 8:30 this
morning. I watched it sitting on the water for about 10 minutes. Then it flew
off to the south. I thought it might have stopped at six-mile, but it wasn't
there when I checked about 15 minutes later.

[cobirds] Sabine's Gulls

2014-09-17 Thread Glenn Walbek
There are currently at least 12 Sabine's Gulls at Chatfield Reservoir. I
haven't looked at the Platte Delta side yet. There has been up to 7 at Cherry
Creek the past couple of days. All of these are juvenile plumage birds except
an adult was at Cherry Creek Saturday but not seen since. There is also a
fallout of Yellow-rumped Warblers at Chatfield this morning. I have seen
several dozen birds near the handicapped fisherman's parking area.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir -- no Sabine's Gulls 9/17

2014-09-17 Thread Brandon

I got back from several days in the mountains, and went out to Pueblo
Reservoir, Pueblo County this morning and scoped the lake, and didn't find any
Sabine's Gulls or jaegers. There were still 40+ Black Terns and a basic
plumage Common Loon. Hopefully the Sabine's Gull invasion will reach Pueblo
Reservoir in the next few days.

The Results from last Saturday's (13 Sept) Pueblo County Fall Count is being
compiled. The species total is over 160 species found in the county on
Saturday. A big thanks to the people were able to help. The best birds that I
know of were two Pine Warblers, Blue-headed Vireo, Black Rail, two Acorn
Woodpeckers, Nashville Warbler, a Black and Eastern Phoebes, two Green Herons,
a Great Egret, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, American Redstart, Gray Flycatchers,
White-winged Doves, Eastern Kingbird, Cassin's Sparrow, Greater Roadrunner,
Red-naped Sapsucker (in Pueblo), Peregrine Falcon, Cassin's Vireos, Townsend's
Warblers, Pygmy Nuthatches in Pueblo, among other things.

[cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding Report, 9/17/14

2014-09-17 Thread meredith
Heat again a factor in numbers caught today - partly just fewer birds
around and partly because we are closing earlier due to the temperature.
Our cool bird of the day was an Ovenbird, a relatively rare bird for the
station (4 in the past 9 years). Here's the breakdown of the 28 new birds
banded:

House Wren 3
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3
Hermit Thrush 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Ovenbird 1
Wilson's Warbler 15
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Oregon Junco 1 (FOS, and early by about 2 weeks!)

Open daily through Sat, then closed Sun and Mon.

Jaeger is now on the water and doing short flights near the E. dam. Main
point is it is here and covering a lot of ground (er, water) on the big
lake so be persistent if you don't track it down right away. Still 4
Sabine's Gulls on 6-Mile Res immediately S. of Boulder Res. along with a
Common Tern. From the NE corner I just watched an adult Clark's Grebe (one
of a pair) feed a 3/4 grown chick (also one of a pair.). I doubt if the
still-mostly fuzzy chicks can fly so breeding there?

Enjoy- Bill Schmoker, Longmont.

[cobirds] Re: LT Jaeger update, Boulder Res

2014-09-17 Thread David Dowell
Directions to Boulder Reservoir, which has access from 3 locations, are
provided in the county birding guide:

http://coloradocountybirding.org/BySite.aspx?SiteID=368CountyID=7

According to the website
(https://bouldercolorado.gov/parks-rec/reservoir-hours-and-fees), the gates
to the main entrance on 51st Street open at 7:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM.
Any cars inside must be out by 7:00 PM. Hours change on October 1. There
is no admission fee this time of year, and the staff at the entrance gate
is friendly to birders. The main entrance provides access to the marina,
boat ramp, and dam on the south side of the lake, and also offers views
into Sixmile Reservoir, which is private, just south of Boulder Reservoir.

Otherwise, access to Boulder Reservoir is from the trailheads on the
northwest and northeast sides.

[cobirds] Bent Co Arctic Tern and BB Sandpiper

2014-09-17 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings
Today Nick Moore and I birded Kiowa and Bent Counties
Jett Reservoir just s of Eads in Kiowa was filled with shorebirds but naught
more interesting than 2 BB Plovers and 2 Pec Sands

The Neenoshe Locust Grove was sluggish, but did have a cooperative Broad-winged
Hawk and very bright Cassin's Vireo

Tempel Grove was very slow with only highlight being a Plumbeous Vireo

John Martin was astonishing. It had thousands upon thousands of birds. At the
northeast boatlaunch there was 1-2 Common Terns and a imm (born this summer)
ARCTIC TERN that approached us as close as 30 feet.

From overlooks at the northwest corner we had a couple thousand shorebirds,
Stilt Sandpiper being the most numerous. We had a sweet juv BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER on dry looking flats between the bluffs and the water - so one of
the closest birds. We also had a SB Dowitcher, and flying over the water, 2
Sabines Gulls. No jaegers, alas

Adobe Creek (Blue Lake) Reservoir is a tale of two sides. The west side is a
patch of superb shorebird habitat. The most interesting birds there were
late-ish BN Stilts and Willet. The east side still holds deep water and had 3
Sabines Gulls. No jaegers :-)

Good Birding
