[cobirds] Northern Goshawk, Boulder

2015-01-03 Thread Joyce Takamine
When I went out to feed the birds this morning, the Blue Jays were
squawking.
So I looked around and saw a accipiter in a neighbors tree. When it made
itself
more visible I could tell that it was a Northern Goshawk maybe a female by
its size.

It was interesting that the small birds (juncos and chickadees) continued
to feed,
the E Collared Doves were no where to bee seen and the Blue Jays were
trying to
harass the goshawk.

Nice to start off the New Year with a new yard bird.

[cobirds] Denver Urban CBC - Denver, Arapahoe, Adams

2015-01-03 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds

Our preliminary count for the Denver Urban CBC Jan. 1, without four of the
important areas, stands at 80 species, 23,868 individuals. Two-thirds of them
Canada Cackling Geese.

So far, House Finches outnumber House Sparrows - a new development - 471 to
336. As an urban count, after the geese the most common species: Rock Pigeon,
Eur. Starling, Am. Crow. Because the three South Platte River areas haven't
chimed in, we don't have a sense of the duck count (without the river, we have
565 Mallards).

100 raptors of 10 species, plus 43 Bald Eagles (42 counted by Diane Buell going
to the roost at Rocky Mtn. Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge). Unusual species
include 2 Say's Phoebes found by Mike Serruto's group, as well as the one
reported yesterday by Lauren Brook; 9 Snow Geese; one Thayer's 2 Lesser
Black-backed Gulls, both by Cheryl Teuton Dan Brooks' group at Cherry Creek
State Park.

[cobirds] Recent Boulder County Highlights

2015-01-03 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All

Today, there was an adult KRIDER'S Red-tailed Hawk at the NW corner of County
Line Rd and Hwy 119, likely the same bird that bred at Sandstone and has been
seen around Union, across the street in Weld

Nearby, along the railroad tracks that cross County Line Rd (also known as Weld
Co Rd 1), about 1/8 of a mile from Weld County, there was a Western Scrub-Jay

Yesterday, at Valmont, not much luck with gulls, as they all landed directly
between me and the sun. Prior to the gull's arrival, with better light, I had
1200 Common Mergs, about a dozen RB Mergs, 12 DC Cormorants, a handful of
Western Grebes, and an immature TUNDRA SWAN.

Birding around Windsor (town) yesterday, Sean and Meghan Walters and I had two
type-5 Red Crossbills (maybe as many as 8), and 5-10 each Mtn Chickadees and RB
Nuts plus 3 Brown Creepers. This all in 2 hours. One wonders what might be
hiding there.

Gulls have departed the Larimer County Landfill as apparently roost sites
(i.e., open water) has vanished.

[cobirds] Acorn Woodpeckers - Lake Isabel CBC, Pueblo Co. 1/3

2015-01-03 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Lisa Edwards and I counted birds in Pueblo Mountain Park (among other places)
in Beulah, Pueblo County today for the Lake Isabel CBC.  We were able to see
two Acorn Woodpeckers at the Horseshoe Lodge parking lot, in the big dead
ponderosa pine tree, where they breed.  These birds seem to be all year
residents now, which is pretty cool.  This is the 2nd time for the species on
the Lake Isabel CBC, and two birds is a record high for all Colorado CBCs.  So
far, only two Colorado CBCs have had this species, as far as I know.  Colorado
Springs (twice) and Lake Isabel (twice).
I think the species total for today's Lake Isabel CBC, (compiler Dave
Silverman) is at least 70 species, which is above average.  Some highlights:
Brown Thrasher, White-winged Dove, Lapland Longspur, Northern Pygmy-Owl,
Northern Saw-whet Owls, Northern Goshawk among others, that I'm probably
forgetting.  There seemed to be good numbers of Mountain Bluebirds, American
Tree Sparrows, and Cassin's Finches.

[cobirds] Results of Rawhide Power Station CBC, Larimer County

2015-01-03 Thread Douglas Kibbe
More than a dozen hardy souls ignored dire weather forecasts and tackled their
territories at and around the Rawhide Power Station today. The storm held off
just long enough for most to finish covering their count areas, but by 1 PM a
total whiteout of blowing snow made birding impossible and driving dangerous.
Longtime participants have learned to accept (some would argue expect) such
adverse conditions and the compiler is in awe of their perseverance year after
year.

This year 66 species were recorded including Northern Goshawk (which showed
amazing agility capturing an American Robin in front of one team's car),
Merlin, California Gull, Wilson's Snipe, Canyon Wren, Lapland Longspur, Snow
Bunting, Gray-crowned Rosy-finch, and first count records of Brown-capped
Rosy-finch and Purple Finch. Thanks to all who participated!

[cobirds] Crook CBC results

2015-01-03 Thread stevenelarson
Hi All,
Eight participants tallied 66 species on a weather-shortened Crook CBC today.
Of interest were a nice male Eastern Towhee at Tamarack Ranch and a Common
Grackle on the Condon Ranch. Goose numbers were very low compared to past years
as were most other waterfowl. This was due to the fact that almost everything
was frozen. Misses included Prairie Falcon for the first time ever and
White-breasted Nuthatch. By Noon the wind and snow had become unbearable and we
all headed for home which in itself was an adventure. Many spin-outs along I-76

Hopefully it will stick around at the feeders behind the Livermore Church. As
far as I can tell, birders are welcome to view the birds here. I am not too
familiar with the site, but I presume there are Sunday services there, so I
would suggest that any birders who visit the site be considerate and sensitive
