[cobirds] Re: Vermilion Flycatcher in Pueblo 4/5 -- correction and photos

2015-04-05 Thread Brandon K. Percival
I just realized, my post below said, Joy and Richard Lake, it should be Joy and
Leonard Lake who re-found the bird.  Sorry to Leonard, for messing up your
name.  I think nine birders were able to see the Vermilion Flycatcher today
though 530pm or a little after.  Hope it stays for the crowd that is coming
tomorrow morning.

The last location of the male Vermilion Flycatcher, was west of the Cottonwood
Picnic Area, along the Arkansas River, between this parking lot and road bridge
(this is east/below Pueblo Reservoir dam), Pueblo County.  It on both sides of
the river, and seen by several people from the road bridge looking east.  The
bird was first found by Pearle Sandstorm-Smith and Clif Smith.  Several of us
searched for hours in the heat, and couldn't find it, Joy and Richard Lake,
re-found it from the road bridge.  There is a territorial singing Eastern
Phoebe under this bridge, which did chase the Vermilion Flycatcher a couple of
times.  I'll try to post tomorrow as early as possible, if it is still present.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 14:30:00
Total observation time: 6.5 hours

Official Counter:Lee Farrell

Observers:Kathanne Lynch

Visitors:
A number of very pleasant individuals inquired as to what we were doing,
they seemed interested and appreciative, but not likely to take up the
cause.

And, as has become the norm this year, there were an equal number of
people, oblivious to what was taking place, getting in the way, occupying
our immediate space, making hawk watching more difficult than it might be
otherwise.

Weather:
A warm sunny day with limited cloud cover, winds were variable and ranged
in strength from calm to 3 BFT

Raptor Observations:
Most of the migrating birds were observed at the limit of binoculars and
west of the ridge. Birds were for the most part circling up in thermals and
gliding away to the north. Only the Kestrels passed close to the station.

Mid-morning a Peregrine circled up south of the station, then glided away
directly north at a high rate of speed until it was out of sight, it was
counted as a migrator. The two local Peregrines appeared mid-afternoon
circling for a period of time above the station.

A number of local Red-tailed Hawks were seen throughout the day, several
non-migrating Turkey Vultures were observed along west ridge.

Non-raptor Observations:
Other bird species seen included: Mountain Bluebird, Black-capped
Chickadee, Mountain Chickadee, American Crow, Northern Flicker, Western
Scrub-Jay, Black-billed Magpie, Western Meadowlark, Common Raven, American
Robin, White-throated Swift, and Spotted Towhee.

Predictions:
Looks like a another nice day tomorrow with strong winds out of the south
and west, only the birds know for sure.

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from the Rocky Mountain
Bird Observatory from about 9 AM to around 4 PM from the first week of
March to the first week of May.

[cobirds] Morgan/Weld Easter Birding

2015-04-05 Thread William H Kaempfer
Tina Jones and I went out on the NE plains today for grassland and water birds.
Ponds are full of dabbling ducks, but diving ducks were harder to find. To
start the day we had a FOS Swainson's Hawk at Ireland Reservoir between Hudson
and Keansburg. We continued on to Andrick SWA and Jackson Reservoir; the
former was full of ducks with a heavy dose of American White Pelicans plus 3 or
4 Bonaparte's Gulls. Three Northern Harriers were "messing around" in the
area, too. Jackson was not very active other than Ring-billed Gulls and
Western Grebes, but there was a small group of 9 Snow Geese way out on the
water.

We headed north from Jackson, and made a snap decision to try for longspurs
noting that Briggsdale is about as close to Jackson Res. as it is to anything
else! On the way we had another Swainson's in Weld, just beyond the NW corner
of Morgan County. At Murphy's Pasture we had a smattering of McCown's
Longspurs, and then we accidentally flushed a group of about 15 along the road
being observed by a visitor from Alabama. He accepted our apology with such
grace that he pointed up on to a spot where he had seen Chestnut-collareds as
well. We backtracked to WCR 86 just west of WCR 105 where we found said birds.
(Unlike Mark Miller's trip to Washington County we could not add a Mountain
Plover.)

Then we turned for home via the Loloff/Latham area. Loloff's resident
Black-necked Stilts were present at the north end while the playa on the south
side of WCR 48 at Lower Latham not only had another stilt flying around, it had
three Lesser Yellowlegs joining a couple of Greaters plus four Baird's
Sandpipers.

[cobirds] Swainson's Hawks (Boulder/Weld), longspurs et al (Washington) 4/5

2015-04-05 Thread Mark Miller
Hi Everyone-

I saw my FOS Swainson's Hawks today 4/5 along CO-52: one soaring near WCR 3
1/2, the other perched in a tree just east of the intersection with US-287.

This was on the way back from checking out the longspurs along CR KK in
Washington County: 20 Chestnut-collared, 10 McCowns. One Mountain Plover was
at CR KK and Road 20. A Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel was busy chasing down
Red-legged Grasshoppers here. His success rate was maybe 10%, but he kept at
it. Along the stretch of CR KK from CR 12 to CR 22, I saw five Rough-legged
Hawks, all light morph.

[cobirds] Phoebes, Boulder, and wildlife closure areas

2015-04-05 Thread JohnT
All:
With all the hoopla about the 3 species of phoebes now at the
75th St Bridge at 75th and Boulder Creek, many birders are coming to see
the show. Note: Several birders are ignoring the Conservation Habitat
signs for Lower Boulder Creek. If you cross 75th going east, on either
side to the creek (north or south) you are subject to fines. Don't be
tempted to do this. The area is off limits, except for research permit
holders. And rangers and researches do patrol this area. Avoid the
temptation, and lets not give the birding community a "black-eye."

That said: All three phoebe species are easily seen on the
West Side of the bridge (the legal side) near the parking area. The black
phoebe has been actively calling and feeding all weekend in this area. On
Saturday the eastern phoebe was seen collecting nesting materials, and
trying to carry them up under the street bridge, but was frightened off
several times by people standing under the bridge. A say's phoebe can be
seen further west along the Heatherwood Trail near the footbridge by the
water treatment plant. There is also a dipper singing and foraging under
the 75th street bridge.

Other notes:

Western and Mountain bluebirds are in Boulder Mt Park. Check the NCAR
parking lot area up Table Mesa Drive.

Bushtits seen along the Mesa Trail near NCAR

Turkey vultures have arrived in numbers throughout Boulder County

Common grackles and mourning doves have returned to Boulder, Lafayette, and
Louisville

Male towhee numbers are increasing as well as songs - Boulder and Louisville

Wild Turkeys seen along the Mesa Trail near Shannahan Ridge

Great Horned owls are on nest is several locations in Boulder County as
well as Bald Eagles and Red Tailed Hawks (prolific).

Blooms and events:
Wild plum just started: when wild plum is in full bloom along the
foothills, watch for returning warblers such as orange-crowned, yellow,
Audubon's, McGillvray's. and Virginia's
Yellow violet - a signal that prairie falcons are on nests
Oregon Grape - towhees are singing vigorously
Sand Lilly's - sandhill cranes are migrating
Dandelions - robins singing and returning
You get the picture.
Also: bladderpod, goldenbanner, spring beauties, bastard toadflax (not to
be confused with toadflax), Wyeth bisquitroot, desert parsley, buttercup
ssp., and others

Animals seen \ Boulder County:
Fox squirrel, aberts squirrel, chickaree, mule deer, red fox, black tailed
prairie dog.

Up higher in RMNP Larimer County side:
Signs:  Moose, Elk, Mule Deer, Coyote, Red Fox, Pocket Gopher, Vole ssp;
Jumping mice ssp; - bird life quiet but did note mountain bluebirds in
good numbers.

Everything is connected. Including that ticket the ranger just gave you.
;)

Happy birding,
John T (Tumasonis) of Louisville CO

2015-04-05 Thread Sean Walters
Hello Chuck and all,

Thank you Chuck for the update on the Long-tailed Ducks! I do have to refuse
any finding ownership of these beautiful individuals. I was third or fourth
hand in the info chain (I heard of it through Megan Miller through Austin Hess
who I think heard through David Wade). Anyway, these birds are at a relatively
small pond. If you are interested in viewing this species without the need for
a scope, this is the occasion. When I went, I was able to pick them out with
the naked eye at first. They were always at least in binocular range.
