[cobirds] Warblers, Fountain Creek, El Paso Co
I was ready for disappointment this morning when I arrived at Hanson Nature Center and found it closed. So I birded from Duckwood to Willow Springs and found eight warbler species. Most of the action was on the north side of Rice Pond, where I found a female American redstart and Blackpoll warbler. There was also a plumbeous vireo in the same area. The warblers were working the trees around the beaver lodge. Other warblers were MacGillivray's, Wilson's, yellow, yellow-rumped, orange-crowned, and common yellowthroat. [cobirds] Bell's Vireo/Painted Bunting -- Pueblo County 5/24
This morning I was surprised to find a singing Bell's Vireo at Valco Ponds SWA in Pueblo. It was singing continuously for a half a hour, when I was trying to get photos of it. There are two ways to get to this bird. You can park at Valco Ponds parking lot, along Hwy 96, and walk to the last pond (3rd pond), and keep walking east, until you are almost past the pond. On your right (south) there are lots of olives, this is where the bird was. If you would rather not park at Valco Ponds parking lot, the other closest place to park, is the eastern end of the Osprey Picnic Area on the North side of the river. You'll have to walk east and then follow the river to the Valco Bridge, cross the bridge to south side of the river and go west to about where the 3rd Valco Pond appears, and on your left (south) is where the bird was. Also, when I was at the east end of the 3rd Valco Pond, when I was walking around it, a green colored bunting -- Painted Bunting flew out of the willows, and went to west side of the pond. I didn't go back there, to try to re-find it. I wasn't able to get photos of this bird, as I mostly only saw it in flight. This was my 3rd green plumage Painted Bunting this spring in Colorado! Since these two species breed in other parts of Colorado, these birds are probably not of interest to most people, except for a few local people. It is a long walk (a mile at least) from either of the two parking lots, unfortunately. The only other thing of note, on my five mile hike this morning, were four Bonaparte's Gulls on the Fish Hatchery Ponds, west of Valco Ponds parking lot/east of Snakeskin Picnic Area parking lot. [cobirds] Boulder County birding mudfest Part 3 - last
All: Oh lordy. Will it every end. The rain, the hail, *the mud.* These are for May 22, 23, 23 for Boulder County. *Species of note are listed in CAPS.* Sawhills \ Walden - SWAINSON's THRUSH, western wood peewee, common yellowthroat, and more American white pelicans. Some Audubon's warblers, but numbers are dwindling. A wet sloppy day. Skunk Creek Boulder Mt Park - RED HEADED WOODPECKER - flew across the intersection of Skunk Creek and the NCAR feeder trail. Good looks, flew up into a ponderosa. What makes this so unusual, is that red-headed's have been in serious decline throughout Boulder County for decades. And even more unusual - I've never seen one in Boulder Mt Park, in a mixed ponderosa forest. Also at skunk creek: lazuli buntings, bullock's orioles, yellow breasted chats, spotted towhees, gray catbirds, lesser goldfinches, pine siskins, yellow warblers, MacGillvray's warblers, green tailed towhee, western tanagers, blue gray gnatcatcher, SWAINSON's THRUSH, cordilleran flycatcher, scrub jay, and virgina's warbler. And mule deer and one coyote pup. And mud - I sunk to my ankles in gooey sticky mud on upper skunk creek trail. Sombrero Marsh: Someone else already reported, but I saw 4 BLACK TERNS at the marsh. Along with a GREAT TAILED GRACKLE. (Alex Cruz told me they were roosted there). Wild Basin RNMP: Boulder County: it started as a nice sunny day, and ended up with hail, thunderstorms, and torrential rain. - golden crowned kinglets, ruby crowned kinglets, brown creeper, American dipper, cooper's hawk, Audubon's warblers (lots, singing), dusky grouse.I got stuck on a ridge above Ouzel Lake, with storms moving in from every direction. Within 20 minutes it went from blue skies to searing flashes of lightning and dark-as-midnight clouds. Pounding hail all the way back to the parking lot. (Note: upper Wild Basin parking lot is now open. Bridge at Ouzel Falls is still out, but you can cross if you have good balance and some hiking poles). Bear Creek Canyon: from the Bear Creek Neighborhood: the lower footbridge is out; so is the upper footbridge. There are large sections of sucking, oozing, mud. OVENBIRD: at the upper creek crossing, (where the Mesa Trail intersects) and another one about 400 yards south on the Mesa Trail. Both singing. RED EYED VIREO - Just above the upper creek crossing, singing and foraging in douglas fir, aspen, and box elder. Along with: gray catbirds, yellow breasted chats, MacGillvray's warbler (7), Virginia's warbler (3), Yellow warbler (12), Audubon's warbler (1), cordilleran flycatcher, western wood peewee, SWAINSON's THRUSH, blue gray gnatcatcher, black headed grosbeak, warbler vireo, western tanager (7), bullock's oriole, spotted towhee, green tailed towhee (6), lesser goldfinch, pine siskin, and a golden eagle being pummeled by a common raven. I heard it might clear up by Wednesday, but I doubt it. Backyard in Louisville: got some strange stuff coming in today: black headed grosbeak, spotted towhee, and broad tailed hummingbird. The Heatherwood Trail was opened, closed, opened, and now closed again. I've pretty much had it with the rain. I'm going somewhere tropical soon. ;) John T (Tumasonis) of Louisville CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Migration picks up a last!
Hi cobirders. After 10 days of not gettng out birding or adding anything here Friday May 22 brought 8 Common Grackles 2 on the caged Sunflower feeder one on each side stretching their necks to reach the lower openings and with luck a seed with their beaks, the other 6 in the backyard grass moved in line thru the grass for insects. Saturday the 23rd at 8am a Black-headed Grosbeak male stopped on the feeder too big to get in flew into the nearby Chokecherry where I was able to see its rusty orange rump patch. First ever in my yard! It came back Sunday afternoon for a similar visit. Saturday also my son took me birding at Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife. We saw over 35 species including 11 new ones for my year list including Western Kingbird, Northern Mockingbird,Lark Bunting (group of 20), Bullock's Oriole ( imm. male, later a bright pair), Lark Sparrow, Brown Thrasher, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Song Sparrow ( seen well to count), Blue Grosbeak ( pair),and an Eastern Kingbird, also a Western Wood Pewee. I hope to catch up on lots more migrants before summer. Bob Spencer N.E. of Golden. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Indigo Bunting +, Loveland,Larimer
Hi All, Rare for me was a beautiful male Indigo Bunting and what looked like a female Lazuli Bunting in a dogwood bush and under it where I feed seed on North side of my house a little bit ago. Also around were lots of flycatchers, the only one of which I could identify well was an Olive-sided Flycatcher. Think one was a Cordilleran. Bird song all this morning was fantastic. [cobirds] Bell's Vireo - Douglas
During a 2-hour walk near home, with cloudy sky and a few sprinkles we heard, emanating from a patch of willows, the unmistakable song of a Bell's Vireo, but impossible to see. A couple of hours later, we returned and glimpsed a very active, very hard-to-see, very small bird (enough to pick out the field marks). [cobirds] Looking for Hepatic Tanager, Santa Clara Creek. No Luck, but found Great Crested Flycatcher
Looking for Hepatic Tanager, Santa Clara Creek, Huerfano County, found Great Crested Flycatcher. Many thanks to Paul and Polly Nelder who met me at Santa Clara Creek Sunday Morning 8:15AM, 14 May 2015. I had two hopes for my visit to Heurfano County: Bobolink (got it), and Hepatic Tanager (not so much). CFO has a good listing for Santa Clara Creek, http://coloradocountybirding.org/BySite.aspx?SiteID=113 This can be an important place because it’s been good for Hepatic Tanager in past years. Their spring migration should be over by early June, so I was hopeful. We spent about an hour along Rouse Road birding from the road since everything else is private property. Hepatic Tanager likes to forage high, so that’s where we looked. No calls, no songs, no luck. After having luck with Bobolink (thanks again to Paul and Polly) I went back to Santa Clara creek at noon and spent 3 hours driving the length of Rouse Road looking high and low. I did finally get luck with a Great Crested Flycatcher at the creek. Also have never seen so many Black Headed Grosbeaks…total count was over 50 in 8 miles of driving. Had blue grosbeak as well. [cobirds] Willow flycatcher ID ??? Chico Ranch
I think this is a Willow flycatcher that there were many of at Chico Ranch today (due to the weak eye ring) but I would appreciate confirmation. http://www.avoapples.com/birds/_MG_4927_cr.jpg Thanks Bill bill_ko...@msn.com Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] RMBO Banding at Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso Co.
More rain at Chico Basin Ranch put a damper on the final week of banding, but not before our big day of the season on Monday. We banded 145 birds of 25 species, including a gorgeous male Magnolia Warbler and an equally lovely adult male Orchard Oriole. Steady captures kept the crew hopping until closing at 2 pm. We weren't able to band again until Thursday, with a late start due to overnight rain that soaked the net lanes and made the ranch roads even more muddy. We banded 38 that day and 41 on Friday, including our first and only Veery of the season. We ended the season on Saturday with our second highest day of 78 birds, including the capture of 6 species of flycatcher, a stunning adult male American Redstart, and a feisty adult male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Even with a scant 22 days of banding for the season and a number of net lanes consumed by tumbleweeds, we finished with 625 birds of 50 species, including a station-first Prairie Warbler. Not too shabby. Bill Maynard says that the best birds show up after Nancy leaves. I guess we'll see. Many thanks to Chico Basin Ranch for its enduring hospitality and to my most excellent volunteer crew: assistant bander Diane Luck, superior scribe Lynne Miller, and hopefully-returning net picker Anna Joy Lehmicke. [cobirds] Fun birding at CU East Campus, Boulder County
COBirders, I spent the morning along the bike path by the CU East Campus, Confluence Ponds. There was a female/first-year Blackpoll Warbler, a Veery haning out with White-crowned Sparrows, several Swainson's Thrushes, singing Red-eyed Vireo, Gray Flycatcher and the previously reported Northern Mockingbird was on the west side of the pond. Western Wood-Pewees were seemingly at every turn...plus many unidentified small empids. Later I was at Cottonwood Marsh where the Black Terns continue their photography-defying dancing -- I counted 18 today, but there have been upwards of 28 this week... As the storm approached, I heard and then saw four Sandhill Cranes heading east...being pushed by the weather. Seems late for Sandhills, no? Some photos are posted here https://www.flickr.com/photos/pgburke/. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Blue Grosbeak, Bobolink and fallout!
We went out to Rouse Road with an out of town birder to try for Hepatic Tanager. Searched and searched but could not find one. We did have quite a few Blue Grosbeaks, Lazuli Buntings. some Western Tanagers, a White-breasted Nuthatch attending it's young, Western Bluebirds and a Golden Eagle! Paul did find a Ladder-backed Woodpecker. We then went out County Road 360 and were able to find at least 4, possibly 6 Bobolinks...all very far away. After yet another cloudy morning and a Spring time squall we decided to head out Valley Road thinking we might find Lark Buntings. We were unable to locate any Lark Buntings, but suddenly found ourselves in the midst of hundreds of birds! There must have been some sort of small fallout going on. On ONE stretch of barbed wire fence approximately 20 ft. long we saw the following: 8 Bullock's Orioles 4 Western Tanagers more than a dozen Lark Sparrows equally as many Chipping Sparrows 6 Western Wood Pewees 5 Western Kingbirds 3 Eastern Kingbirds Barn Swallows Western Meadowlark 6 Blue Grosbeaks One lone male Bobolink singing it's fool head off! Farther along we found Ash-throated Flycatcher Swainson's Hawk Cliff Swallows Yellow Warblers Mountain Bluebirds Savannah Sparrow This appears to be a very good year for Bullock's Orioles. We have more than a dozen coming to our backyard feeders and found 50+ along Valley Road today! We have never seen so many Blue Grosbeaks along one stretch of road. We stopped counting at 35!
