Re: [cobirds] Char field Sandspit (Douglas County)
I've been asked to give a reminder that during this time of numerous, rich sightings at Chatfield (and other spots), we should keep a respectful distance from our subjects. It would be best if we stick to the high ground on the Sandspit and Plum Creek Delta. As one who really enjoys taking photos of the great species we see here, I don't want to be "that guy" who spooks the bird and we don't see it again until next season! Thanks for your help with this, we are having an awesome Fall in Colorado! And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming. Good birding! Watching the Turnstone at the Plum Creek delta area right now. A bit muddy walk out to the shoreline but worth it. [cobirds] Lamar (Prowers) yesterday (10/9)
Very birdy yesterday in the couple areas I observed in Lamar. Willow Valley Subdivision private yard east of Willow Creek Park *Blue-headed Vireo (photos) finding Rough Stinkbugs on dead limbs of Siberian Elm, photos, new for Janeal's yard list. Ruby-crowned Kinglet (estimate 15, could have been more) feasting on hackberry psyllids in Northern Hackberry and on the bark of a nearby Siberian Elm Gray Catbird (1) Sandhill Crane (few heard at 8:15am, none the rest of the day) Spotted Towhee (1m in juniper) Common Nighthawk (at least 75 filtering south, some at very high altitude, at dusk) Chimney Swift (at least 8 migrants seen low thru the trees at dusk) Riverside Cemetery off Maple Street in northeast part of Lamar Much action in the tangle of growth that grew along the ditch along the north edge of the cemetery, along the east side, and going out to the north from the northwest corner, and along the north edge of the alfalfa field north of the cemetery. The dominant plant is Giant Ragweed. Also lots of action in hackberry due to ongoing gall psyllid emergence/overwintering dispersal. *Swamp Sparrow (1 hatch-year) northeast corner along ditch, photos *Nashville Warbler (2) north side along ditch in poplar and ragweed, photos of one *Field Sparrow (at least 3) along north edge of alfalfa field, and in northwest corner of cemetery along ditch in ragweed/small elms, photos Blue Grosbeak (1f/i) getting late Orange-crowned Warbler (25+) mostly in ragweed, not sure what they are getting insectwise (examination showed no aphids or other small morsels) Ruby-crowned Kinglet/Yellow-rumped Warbler (many in hackberry) Checked several places today (10/10), not nearly as birdy. Riverside Cemetery *Field Sparrow (2) Common Yellowthroat (1f) Nashville Warbler (1) Common Poorwill (1) photos Thurston Reservoir north of town (Prowers) American Coot (thousands) *Field Sparrow (1) right at the south side boat ramp, photos Northern Mockingbird (will overwinter?) Black-crowned Night-Heron (1i) Upper Queens Reservoir (Kiowa County) Lesser Yellowlegs American Coot (thousands) Herring Gull (2 first-cycle) Osprey (1) eating large Black Bullhead (catfish) Tempel's Grove (Bent County) Swainson's Thrush (1) Eastern Phoebe (1) Otherwise VERY quiet (and almost 90 degrees!) An INCREDIBLE number of Monarchs passing through. The alfalfa fields are aflutter with sulfurs. Supposed to be 90 tomorrow, cooler on Monday, back hot after that. No rain in forecast. [cobirds] Yuma County
I am leading a CFO group this weekend to spots in Yuma County and beyond. Today we managed to hit 92 degrees, but still had some good birding. Highlights included up to 6 Sprague's Pipits at "Pipit Hill" (eBird hotspot) in Hale, 3 Osprey at Stalker Pond in Wray, 10 Northern Bobwhite, 3 Burrowing Owls and a Grasshopper Sparrow on the Road PP route NE of Wray. At a private ranch near the old Bonny Reservoir we had a LeConte's Sparrow, about a half-dozen White-throated Sparrows, at least one Field Sparrow and 6 Eastern Bluebirds. [cobirds] Baca, Prowers, Bent, and Kiowa today (Oct 10)
Chris Rurik and I camped last night at Two Buttes SWA, hearing a Great Horned Owl and various unidentified critters during the night. Today, we birded from Baca to Kiowa Counties. Our reports of what is passing through the region are consistent with Dave Leatherman's. Orange-crowned Warblers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and White-crowned Sparrows are particularly easy to find. Two Buttes SWA (Baca Co.) was moderately birdy today. Some of the highlights included: 1 Blue-headed Vireo 1 Blue-headed / Cassin's Vireo 4 Osprey 2 Field Sparrows 4+ White-throated Sparrows 1 Red-naped Sapsucker 2 Eastern Phoebes 1 Blue Grosbeak lots of Spotted Towhees A Parks and Wildlife official advised us to start wearing orange already because muzzle deer and turkey season began today in southeast Colorado. At Fairmount Cemetery in southeast Lamar (Prowers Co.), some noisy Blue Jays helped us find a Barn Owl. Tempel Grove (Bent Co.) was quiet indeed. We did observe two late Swainson's Hawks. At the now surprisingly large Neenoshe Reservoir (Kiowa Co.), we observed a Red / Red-necked Phalarope. We favored Red based on color and structure but can't be sure owing to distance. Other highlights included Scaled Quail and Sandhill Cranes. At Upper Queens / Neeskah Reservoir (Kiowa Co.), we found a very cooperative Short-billed Dowitcher. It seemed to like the west shore, about 50-100 yards south of the parking area / former boat ramp on the west side.
