EAGLE COUNTY:
--On January 15, Dick Filby reported 2 pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes on the
Frying Pan River out of Basalt.

EL PASO COUNTY:
--The f ACORN WOODPECKER has returned to the 

[cobirds] Gray Catbird, Waneka Reservoir, Boulder County

A calling Gray Catbird was found in the bushes between Waneka Reservoir and 
Greenlee Reservoir in Lafayete, Boulder county at about 9:30 this morning. I 
also heard and saw a catbird at this location on 1/12. T. Floyd reported one on 
1/13. I visit this area most days and did not find it on other dates. Nothing 
else of note was seen at the park today, but the wandering flock of Bushtits 
was seen here on 1/19 for the first time in 2016. Brown Creeper has been seen 
twice so far this year.

Nick Komar spotted a 1st cycle kumlienz Iceland Gull with a pale base of bill 
at South Platte Reservoir, Jefferson County.

Also seen California, Herring, Thayer, Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

[cobirds] DFO program meeting this Monday evening, Jan. 25th

This coming Monday evening, January 25th is DFO's program meeting, with Bill 
Schmoker presenting about his journey last summer to the North Pole.  For more 
specifics about the trip and the program, read the February Lark Bunting.  Or 
better yet, come to the meeting Monday evening and hear about Bill's exciting 
trip!

Program meetings are at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, at 7:30pm.  
Enter using the north security door and wend your way through to the Ricketson 
Auditorium.  As always, you do not need to be a DFO member to attend.

[cobirds] Raptors, E El Paso Co, Saturday

Hi COBirders,

Susan Craig and I were out looking for shrikes to band today, on the plains of 
Eastern El Paso County, mostly between Ellicott and Hanover. We only caught one 
shrike, a recapture from a couple of years ago, and saw four more, but without 
any other takers at the baited traps.

What we did see a lot of was raptors : numerous Red-tailed, Ferruginous and 
Rough-legged Hawks, several N Harrier, a pair of juv Bald Eagles on a power 
pole nowhere near water, dozens of Am Kestrels, and at least four Prairie 
Falcons. On a couple of occasions we saw that the shrikes were noticeably 
nervous about the nearby kestrels, and skittish about dropping to the ground, 
probably for good reason. 

A beautiful day on the plains today, warm, and calm, (which it seemingly NEVER 
is out there!).

Two other birders and I were happy to see this previously reported bird in 
the trees to the northwest of the gym (next to the road) at the Holy Cross 
Abbey in Fremont county.

At sundown today, a pale brown gull showed up in the gull flock at South Platte 
Reservoir that was probably the same bird I identified this morning as 
Kumlien's Iceland Gull. At closer range, I think it may be a hybrid. I posted a 
very poor photo to the CFO Facebook page. Until better images are obtained and 
the identity of this gull can be determined objectively, I will change my eBird 
report to Larus sp.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow Carbondale still

Hi all

 

The White-throated Sparrow made a couple of brief appearances this afternoon
in the back yard. Also a couple of Lewis's Woodpeckers on the power poles on
the hill, and at least one Pinyon Jay was making noise at one of the
neighbor's bird feeders
