[cobirds] 4 Dippers, Boulder Creek, Boulder Co.

2016-04-02 Thread Richard Pautsch
Around 1 pm today, I saw 4 Dippers while walking upstream from Eben Fine
park along the Boulder Creek trail to the "end of city maintenance"
bridge. Two appeared to be paired up; one of the lone birds was
singing/chattering enthusiastically.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 14:00:00
Total observation time: 6 hours

Official Counter:Mike Fernandez

Observers:Karen Fernandez, Mitchell Blystone

Visitors:
Tom, a birder from Steamboat, stopped by with binocs in hand and gave us
much appreciated encouragement. We talked about the success of Carpenter
Ranch in Hayden, near Steamboat. Two guys from Portugal stopped by looking
for dinosaur prints (might be a need for better signage in the Stego lot),
but also asked questions about our activity.

Weather:
A brilliant day on the hill. Visibility was striking. With lightly breezy
and sometimes gusty winds from the east, we hoped we'd see more birds
surfing the updrafts on the Rooney Road side of the ridge. The dozens of
crows did not disappoint. The scent of juniper was drinkable.

Raptor Observations:
It was local entertainment day todayand it was X-rated! Copulating
Kestrels started early, a synchronized crow couple did barrel rolls all
day, and red-tailed romance gained elevation from low over the fields along
Rooney Road up into the skies above Green Mountain.

Non-raptor Observations:
Again, elk near the trail up the west side of the ridge in the morning. In
the afternoon we spotted a group of four elk close by on the east side of
the ridge.

A turkey vulture lolly-gagged end of ridge, then rode up and headed north
overhead in haste, only to stop and do a u-turn at I-70 and head back
south, not to be seen again. Could be a "seasonal local." (Thanks Karen for
the terminology.)

Other locals hung around: red-tailed hawks (~4), american kestrels (2),
black-billed magpies (~5), western meadowlarks (~2), american robin (1),
western scrub-jay (1), common ravens (~7), northern flickers (~4), mountain
chickadees (2), a pine tree full of bushtits at the back of the platform,
townsend's solitaires (~3), white-breasted nuthatch (1), american crows
(~25).

Predictions:
Expect mud. Bring sunscreen and water! Weather looks to be the same Sunday
as it was Saturday. And don't look too hard for Sandhill Cranes.

Report submitted by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies
(jeff.bi...@birdconservancy.org)
Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse.

[cobirds] Am. Avocets, Belmar Park, Jeffco

2016-04-02 Thread Paula Hansley
We saw 3 avocets in the lake at Belmar. They were a surprising sight among all
the No. Shovelers!

If anyone finds a collapsible hiking pole on the northern shore, it is probably
mine. It was floating that direction.

Please call 730-890-2628 if you find
it.

[cobirds] Otero County birding

2016-04-02 Thread David Chartier
Not much shorebird habitat at Cheraw right now. Didn't see any snowy plovers.
A flock of American avocets was the most interesting sighting. Went to Lake
Holbrook after Cheraw. Lots of shorebird habitat and snowy plovers. Also saw
a couple greater yellowlegs and a few Baird's sandpipers. A flock of American
white pelicans and American avocets were also present. A little bit east of
Lake Holbrook on CR FF, there were some black-necked stilts at a small pond on
the south side.

[cobirds] Boulder County varia, Mar. 27-Apr. 2

2016-04-02 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, everybody. No real rarities to report, but it's that time of
year--when new arrivals appear practically daily. Here are are some recent
Boulder County sightings (and soundings):

Sun., Mar. 27; Bear Creek at Baseline Road. One *lesser goldfinch;* with
all the pine plantings and feeders, I wonder if it wintered there.

Sun., Mar. 27; Stearns Lake. Pretty quiet, but check out these *black-billed
magpies* living dangerously .

Mon., Mar. 28; Greenlee Preserve. *African collared-doves* continuing; now
don't y'all come running here all at once... :-)

Tues., Mar. 29; Greenlee Preserve. An amazing *turkey vulture* flight. For
about 15 minutes starting around 4:45 p.m., ca. 250 vultures were flying
*south* over Lafayette; I think they were backed up by, or retreating from,
rain coming in from the north.

Wed., Mar. 30; Eco-Cycle Pond off 63rd Street. One male *mountain bluebird.*

Thurs., Mar. 31; Greenlee Preserve. Two *wood ducks* having a lovers' spat
; A drake *cinnamon teal* paired
with a female of unknown parentage
; *sharp-shinned* and *Cooper's
hawks;* a trio of *bald eagles;* a *marsh wren,* my 234th eBird species at
the site; a *ruby-crowned kinglet;* the baddest *American robin* you will
ever see ; and a *white-throated
sparrow.*

Fri., Apr. 1; South Teller Farms. FOY *osprey* and 5 FOY *American white
pelicans.*

Sat., Apr. 2; Walden Ponds. Ten *wood ducks;* a flock of demon-possessed
*American
white pelicans* *;* a pair of vocal
*eastern screech-owls* *;* and a
flyover *eastern bluebird.*

The coming week should be even better!

[cobirds] Escalante Canyon eBird Hotspots - Delta, Mesa & Montrose Counties

2016-04-02 Thread Mike Henwood
Hello All,

After Tony Leukering's post on March 18 re: eBird Checklist Distance, Joe
Roller and I reorganized the Escalante Canyon HOTSPOTS. From Hwy 50, the
Escalante Canyon Road runs about 20 miles to the Escalante forks area and
upper end of the canyon, goes through several habitat changes, and through
3 counties - Delta, Mesa, and Montrose. Here are the new HOTSPOTS - you
may want to review them before birding Escalante Canyon since much of the
birding requires using offline checklists.

*Escalante Canyon Road--Hwy 50 to RR tracks Delta County
 *New *HOTSPOT.*
*Escalante Canyon--Gunnison River to Cap Smith Cabin Delta County
*New name for same *HOTSPOT *as we have now, and where most of
our checklists come from.

*Escalante Canyon--Cap Smith Cabin to Potholes Area Delta County
*New *HOTSPOT *These 3 replace *Escalante Canyon--Cap
Smith to Escalante Forks*
*Escalante Canyon--Potholes Area to Mesa County Road Sign Montrose County,
 *New *HOTSPOT *
*Escalante Canyon--Escalante Forks Area Mesa County
 *New *HOTSPOT*

*Escalante Canyon--Brushy Ridge Road west to forest boundary Mesa County
*New *HOTSPOT*

Thanks,
