[cobirds] Dickcissel over Robert A. Easton Regional Park, JeffCo 7/11

2016-07-11 Thread David Suddjian
Today I had a *Dickcissel* pass over me in the grassland park area of
Robert A. Easton R.P. that is south of Coal Mine Ave. in JeffCo.

A *Sage Thrasher* was singing in Ken Caryl Valley; the first I've had there
since spring migration, and presumably a "fall" migrant. A *Mountain
Bluebird* family in the same area (5 fledged young) was delightful.

"My" *Wilson's Snipe* continues near my home. I haven't heard him winnowing
since the last full moon waned significantly, but he is out there in his
marsh chipping away. I'll be interested to hear if winnowing resumes in the
coming nights with the waxing moon.

[cobirds] Re: Western Gull Still At Blanca Wetlands

2016-07-11 Thread Steve Stachowiak
Cobirders,

This is to point out that there was not an accepted record of Western Gull
in the state until Walbek found the first state record in June 2011. There
are a couple of other accepted records from 2012 and 2013 (with possibly
another pending). On the surface it appears there maybe a trend for this
species to appear in the state but experience tells us not to count on it.
In other words, it seems that John has an accommodating bird and it would
be well worth taking a drive to observe it on July 16th, at least in my
opinion.

Besides, there are few drives that can rival the scenery of Hwy 285 south
out of Denver down to the San Luis Valley!

Good birding,

[cobirds] more photo contest - we have a winner

2016-07-11 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Jim Schmoker brought up a very good point when he asked me, in essence, "Does
an Ovenbird parent necessarily rule out cowbird." Of course, the answer is
"no". In fact Ovenbirds are parasitized by cowbirds at a high rate. Jim's
email made me scramble and hopefully calling my young bird an ovenbird is still
correct. The power point frame below shows the Rist Canyon bird I saw being
fed by an adult Ovenbird and a juvenile of approximately the same age taken by
Geoff Dennis from the BNA account of Ovenbird. While I couldn't find a great
comparison photo of a cowbird at this age, I think their bill is thicker,
blacker and shaped differently, and their feet are blackish as opposed to pink.

I also got a great graphic from Greg Pasquariello that depicts the plumage
development of Ovenbird:

Check it out for yourself.

[cobirds] John Martin Loons

2016-07-11 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings,
I am dictating this, and therefore apologize for errors. I went to John Martin
today, and found three common loons at approximately the same location at which
the red throated loons had been reported. Two are particularly pale, at least
on the head and neck. For some reason, they tend to hold their bills pointed
upwards. However, they all show signs of a neck collar, and have rather hefty
bills. Indeed, to look just like common loons that I photographed there in June.

Best regards, and good birding,
Steve Mlodinow

Early guesses have been hermit thrush, Townsend's solitaire and eastern
bluebird. All good tries, all incorrect. Participants are not limited to one
try.

[cobirds] Western Gull Still At Blanca Wetlands

2016-07-11 Thread mvjohnski
During official bird surveys this morning, I re-found the Western Gull
(Alamosa County) reported earlier by others. It is on Pond #115, which is
on the way to "South Mallard". You can drive right to this lake and the
gulls are hanging out here with 100 Am W Pelicans. The Blanca Wetlands area
is still closed but will be open to birders on Sat July 16th. Lots of
shorebirds present today including Willet, Marbled Godwit, Western
Sandpipers, and Stilt Sandpiper. Pond #016 remains the best for shorebirds.
