2016-08-17 Thread Steve Brown
Hi COBirders,

I had a record-breaking day of banding at Clear Spring Ranch today. The hay
field across the road from my station is getting deep, and there is a constant
coming and going there. To see what might happen I put up some nets by some
bushes there, and the floodgates opened.
60 Chipping Sparrows, 7 Black-headed Grosbeaks, 3 Lazuli Buntings, a Blue
Grosbeak, 3 Com Yellowthroats, a Lark Sparrow, a Savannah Sparrow, and some
rare catches - 2 more Northern Waterthrush (#3, 4 this week), a Clay-colored
Sparrow, a female Indigo Bunting, and a Willow Flycatcher.

And of note, only six birds were caught in my normal lanes. Sigh.

Happy Migration,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso, Pueblo), Ramah Res (El Paso)

2016-08-17 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Work has really interfered with birding this summer, but today I escaped
and went to Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso Co, Pueblo Co) (fee area). Kind of
summer-ey, kind of fall-ish based on what I saw.

Highlights on the El Paso Co side were Scaled Quail, Sora, Sage thrasher,
Brown Thrasher (no Curve-billed), Spotted Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe,
Red-headed Woodpecker, Common Nighthawk, Olive-sided Flycatcher,
Ash-throated Flycatcher consuming a dragonfly, Marsh Wren, Yellow Warbler,
about 12 Wilson's Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, Lark Bunting.

On the Pueblo Co side highlights were many of the same plus Northern
Harrier, Barn Owl, Prairie Falcon, another Red-headed Woodpecker, and a
single Bank Swallow.

I went the back way (Burrowing Owl, Peyton Highway) up to Ramah Reservoir
(El Paso Co) and among other things saw White-faced Ibis, Lesser
Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Wilson's Phalarope,
Black Tern, and a Peregrine Falcon ripping up the sky harassing everything
in sight.

[cobirds] Colorado Birds Summer issue correction

2016-08-17 Thread swgillihan
Due to an error on my part, the photos in Tony Leukering's "In the Scope"
article in the Summer 2016 issue of *Colorado Birds* (vol. 50, no. 3) were
shuffled. Corrected versions of the article and the full Summer issue have
been posted to the CFO website (http://cobirds.org), and a correction will
appear in the Fall issue. My apologies to our readers and to Tony for
fouling up his fine article on Yellow-rumped Warbler identification.

Cobirders,

This is a remarkable sighting for urban Denver but is it really that
unusual? After all, they are the Metro State *Roadrunners.*

Although, at this point I am wishing they were the Metro State Couch's

[cobirds] Pine Warbler in Lamar (Prowers)

2016-08-17 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
At Fairmount Cemetery on Memorial Drive in the southeastern part of Lamar
(Prowers) yesterday (8/16) I had a very active, very ratty-looking Pine Warbler
high in pines at Fairmount Cemetery. It moved from pine to pine to pine and
eventually flew off, apparently to the north. I would guess it was a first
fall bird but it could have been an adult in the middle of pre-basic molt. Had
I not seen a bird like this at this location on about this date several years
ago, I would have been hard-pressed for an ID. Blotches of yellow on the
breast amid an otherwise grayish body, weak, wide wingbars, biggish warbler
with biggish bill, longish tail, and thought I saw a flash of white in the tail
a couple times. Never gave a great look and definitely not chaseable.

Fairmount also had a robust population of at least 5 Olive-sided Flycatchers, a
few pewees, and I heard a couple orioles, presumably Bullock's on the move or
at least stirring.

Heard a Northern Cardinal at Lamar Community College Woods while I was
collecting Dipogon wasps from cottonwoods south of the tennis courts.

I don't have any further details. He's a competent biologist and I don't

Thanks for the help from every one. I believe now this was not at all a

black wing tip, that turned out to be the tail. Thanks again,
