[cobirds] Reminder: Fremont County Eurasian Wigeon is on private property

2016-12-11 Thread SeEttaM .
Now that the ice has melted on Canon City's eastern Valco pond the Eurasian
Wigeon is likely even further back and maybe not viewable from the side of
the road where it has been previously seen. Today a light colored Prius was
in the parking lot and as I drove by I saw a distant birder trespassing far
inside the property . Be aware the property owner is not concerned with
birders seeing their target species. He is a strong private property
rights proponent.

[cobirds] Long-eared Owl at Ken Caryl Valley JEF

2016-12-11 Thread David Suddjian
A male *Long-eared Owl* was calling for a while this evening from Massey
Draw near my home in Ken Caryl Valley. This is the first time I've heard
the species in the immediate area of my home, although I have had
Long-eared in the hills within 2-3 miles west of my home, and once at the
Lyons hogback to the east. An iPhone recording is uploaded to this eBird
checklist.

[cobirds] RE: Golden Eagle - Mead, Weld

2016-12-11 Thread Pauli Driver-Smith
Several people have contacted me with questions and most think that this is a
juvenile Bald Eagle. I know that the photo is bad but we only had our cell
phones and this was the best one. As I told some of them, I did question if it
was a Golden or not, but the more that I think of it, there are some things
that just don’t jive with what I know about young Bald Eagles. We get a lot of
young and mature Bald Eagles here on Highland Lake, so I am used to seeing
them. This bird was not even close to the color they are. For one thing, there
was no white spotting (I don’t know a better word for it) on its body color
that is very indicative of a juveniles I’ve seen. I didn’t see any white all,
but then I did not see it flying. It was very comfortable just sitting quietly
on the branch. It was very golden in color with a darker golden brown on the
wings. It was also much larger than the size of a mature Bald Eagle, perhaps
even as much as twice the size. I’m talking huge! Oh, and it didn’t have the
yellow bill that I am used to seeing in Bald Eagles, it looked more grey to me,
at least what I could see.

I’m pretty much a newbie and at times so off base I’m in another state, but
hopefully, I am now describing it better than what the photo would just
indicate.

Thanks, Pauli

I believe that this might be a Golden Eagle. It was spotted just east of old
Town Mead on CR 32 near the intersection of CR 13. It flew into a tree outside
my friend’s home. It was still there at nightfall. I’ve never seen one up close
before so if I am wrong, please tell me.

[cobirds] Rosies at Allenspark 12/11

2016-12-11 Thread snowy.owlets

Hi Everyone,
I drove up to the Fawn Brook Inn in Allenspark today 12/11. Snow was coming
down thick and fast, and a flock of about 100 rosy-finches swirled around the
feeders. Mostly Gray-crowned, with Hepburn's, Brown-capped, and two Black mixed
in.
