[cobirds] Denver CBC initial tally and a FIRST for the Denver CBC!

2016-12-17 Thread Joey Kellner

A good number of hardy souls participated in today's Denver CBC. The
initial tally is 109 species! Not bad for a day starting with 6-8 inches
of snow on the roads and a below zero to single digit highs!

Highlights included:
Ross's Goose
Dunlin (near McClellan Reservoir)
Lesser Goldfinch
All three species of Rosy Finch
Audubon's Warbler
Say's Phoebe
Brown Thrasher
White-throated Sparrow
Harris's Sparrow (multiple)

The Denver CBC has been held annually since 1954 and this year *we added a
new species*! One of the Chatfield groups found a
*GRASSHOPPER SPARROW!!*
You never know what might turn up when you go out birding. :-)

[cobirds] Sunset at Chatfield

2016-12-17 Thread PasqNet
A sunset drive home from the Chatfield dog park produced a Great Horned Owl
visible just north of Kingfisher Bridge, a Merlin settling in for the night in
a tree along the loop road just past the old Heronry Overlook, and 2 Bald
Eagles on Santa Fe just north of Titan.

There was a Golden Eagle on Santa Fe near Aspen Grove about 2 PM.

[cobirds] Boulder Bullock's Oriole

2016-12-17 Thread Peter Burke
B! The Boulder Bullock's Oriole seems to be doing fine in spite of
the chilly temps. I watched the bird today, seemingly comfortable as it fed
below the Osborn's suit feeder beside junkos. There were also Cedar
Waxwings in the area along with a single Bohemian Waxwing -- I'll be
keeping my eyes out for that one tomorrow for the Boulder CBC.

Photos of the oriole can be viewed here
.

Happy Holidays and good birding!

Re: [cobirds] Purple Sandpiper, Summit

2016-12-17 Thread Glenn Walbek
Folks,

Steve Stachowiak, Steve Larson, Loch Kilpatrick and I were able to see and
photograph the Purple Sandpiper this morning. The dark color, orange legs and
orange basal quarter of the mandible appear to eliminate Rock Sandpiper from
contention. Thanks indeed to the Bushong boys who found this rarity during a
blizzard. Photos of the bird can be seen by following this link.

[cobirds] Purple Sandpiper, Summit

2016-12-17 Thread Peter Gent
All,

A group of about a dozen of us looked at and photographed the Purple
Sandpiper between noon and 1pm. Park in the pulloff off Hwy 9 about 1/4
mile north of Swan Mountain Road. We had to walk about 100 yds north to
get a clear view of the bird: follow the postholes in the snow. The bird
was on the reservoir shore right where the Blue River flows in. I just
talked to Bill Kaempfer who saw the bird in the late afternoon, and he said
the bird flew a little way upstream along the Blue River. So, if it's not
actually on the reservoir shore, check along the Blue River itself.

Thanks to the Bushong boys for finding this bird and showing the place to
everyone.

Cheers, Peter Gent.
Boulder.

[cobirds] Random acts of bushtits and other birds, Larimer County

2016-12-17 Thread Libby Edwards
Today at Watson Lake as the sun was setting we watched a flock of about 10
bushtits flitting from rabbit brush bush to rabbit brush bush, calling as they
fed, going single file to a tree and then back again to the rabbit brush.

On Wednesday this week we were hiking in Lory State Park early in the morning
on the Overlook trail, forest dark, and I heard a sound like miniature bells
tinkling, coming closer. And then the area was lit up by flitting golden
crowned kinglets, maybe 12-15 of them, surrounding us as they fed on through up
the slope. They were like little fairies or Christmas lights turned on for a
few moments.

Then on Thursday on the Audra Culver trail in Horsetooth Mountain Park, that
faces west, in a stand of ponderosa was a flock of about 8 or so white breasted
nuthatches, catching the glint of the sun as they flew from tree to tree
calling.

Happy birding

[cobirds] Red-tailes and Magpie war along the river, South Platt River Arapahoe County

2016-12-17 Thread Brian Johnson
Today I went for a walk along my favorite local patch, the first time this
month after getting back from my birding blitz in California. The main
interesting thing I got to watch was a group of three magpies harassing and
mobbing a red-tailed hawk in a tree. Not to usual along this river, but
while watching this I heard the call of a Red-tailed Hawk call and looking
over I saw two more hawks come swooping into to the tree and scattering the
magpies. I have not seen this kind of behavior before. I wonder if this was
a matted pair with this years now grown chick who was being harassed and
the parents where the two that came in. After scattering the magpies the
three hawks flew off together. And shortly latter the magpies came back to
the tree like nothing happen. It was an interesting show to watch. Along
with that the other highlight was five great scaups. Here is my checklist
from ebird for the two areas I birded if you are interested,

[cobirds] Where that Purple Sandpiper may have been headed

2016-12-17 Thread snowy.owlets

Hi Everyone,
When I heard about the Dillon Purple Sandpiper, I was very curious about how it
came to be there. I have an idea of where it trying to go. A couple of winters
ago, I was birding in San Blas on the west coast of Mexico. I found out there
was a Purple Sandpiper wintering at the jetty there with Surfbiirds and Ruddy
Turnstones. I was able to get nice looks at it. It would be worth finding out
if it also overwintered last year. If so, it seems not unreasonable that the
Dillon bird was on its way back to San Blas and got caught in the weather.
Be safe out there if you chase it.
