[cobirds] White-throated Swift flock stopped over to feed near Florence River Park and Barn Owl at Lake Hasty east of Las Animas

2017-05-02 Thread SeEttaM .
Sunday a flock of about 50 White-throated Swifts stopped over near Florence
River Park to feed over the Arkansas River. I have observed good sized
flocks of these swifts doing the same in previous years. A have uploaded a
few pics of them on my Birds and Nature blog.

Today while traveling in far southeastern Colorado I had a little time and
stopped at Lake Hasty to bird for a short time. I was well rewarded when I
spotted a Barn Owl. I got a couple of good pics of it that are on my Birds
and Nature blog.

[cobirds] Baltimore Oriole at Hasty CG, Bent County

2017-05-02 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

With all the recent storm activity, one might expect tremendous migrant
fallout in SE Colorado, but that has not been the case.

One exception is Hasty Campground, below the dam at John Martin
Reservoir. While other local migrant hotspots host almost no birds,
Hasty Campground has most of SE Colorado's migrant Yellow-rumped
Warblers, along with a few other species. After sorting through hundreds
of Yellow-rumps, I finally found a couple of Lazuli Buntings, and a
brilliant male Baltimore Oriole this afternoon.

[cobirds] Crowley County Palm Warbler

2017-05-02 Thread Roger Linfield
Today (Tuesday), Brenda and I found a Palm Warbler at the Ordway Town Reservoir
in Crowley County. It was in the row of trees on the north side.

Elsewhere in the county, we saw a Stilt Sandpiper at Box Springs and five
Sanderlings at Lake Meredith.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 13:30:00
Total observation time: 5.5 hours

Official Counter:Gary Rossmiller

Observers:

Weather:
Cool, chilly at times, overcast day with the sun breaking through at times.
Wind was variable; up to 5 bft in the morning, calming to a 2 bft in the
afternoon. Barometer dropped slightly 30.03" to 29.97". A few rain drops in
the afternoon. Horizons visible but hazy. Very little snow left on northern
slopes.

Raptor Observations:
Just a few local raptors, RT and TV, not a lot of activity. Otherwise, it
was Accipter day! Several got by me before being sighted. Poor light at
times and/or distance have them registered as UA. I confirmed one Cooper's.
I believe all the others were SS. At 9:50 a very grayish bird went by
at/below eye level. I believe a dark Swainson's. Long narrow hands, not a
NH, did not have the disc or the lanky wings. It will be a UB.

Non-raptor Observations:
Jeffco trail crew working on water diversion today. Trail is dry, just a
few moist/wet spots. Just a few people on the platform briefly. Very light
trail use. Local birds active this morning then becoming mostly absent;
Spotted Towhee, Woodhouse Scrubjay, Western Meadowlark, American Robin,
Black billed Magpie, White Throated Swifts (lots!) Canyon Wren.

Predictions:
I hope it's just as entertaining tomorrow.

Report submitted by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies
(jeff.bi...@birdconservancy.org)
Dinosaur Ridge - Bird Conservancy of the Rockies information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through
the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the
ridge.

[cobirds] Ammodramus Sparrow on the patio - Golden - Jeffco

2017-05-02 Thread Ira Sanders
Birders,
As I was trying to get out of the house to go to a hearing about 12:15, I
saw a sparrow on the patio and grabbed the binocs. My first thought was an
Ammodramus with fairly heavy streaking on the breast, dark marking on the
front and a very light median crown stripe. I went for the camera and when
I returned a Scrub-jay had flushed it. I assumed it was a Grasshopper
Sparrow but had to leave w/o a picture.
When I returned a short while ago, I checked Sibley and am not convinced it
was a Grasshopper but some other Ammodramus.
I'm going to stake out the patio with my camera for the afternoon unless I
chase a LB Curlew just north of here.

[cobirds] More Pueblo County birds 5/2

2017-05-02 Thread Brandon
Besides for the singing male Northern Paurla, that I already posted
about from the Osprey Picnic Area in Rock Canyon. I found a few other
birds while I walked all of Valco Ponds and Rock Canyon, below Pueblo
Reservoir dam this morning. An adult White-throated Sparrow, a
singing Warbling Vireo, a Clay-colored Sparrow, a Green-tailed Towhee,
two male Bullock's Orioles, two Eastern Phoebes, three Orange-crowned
Warblers, like 20 Yellow-rumped Warblers, eight White-faced Ibis, ten
American Avocets, a Spotted Sandpiper, a Lesser Scaup, two
Buffleheads, like 8 million swallows of all six species that are
normal, among other birds.

At Pueblo Reservoir, a Sanderling (in winter plumage), a Semipalmated
Plover (first seen yesterday), a Western Sandpiper, a Least Sandpiper,
a Long-billed Dowitcher, two White-faced Ibis, a Cassin's Kingbird
(first seen yesterday), and a couple Lark Sparrows.

I still haven't seen a Western Kingbird or Yellow Warbler this year, I
guess they will come sometime.

Yesterday morning, the Carolina Wren was singing at the usual spot,
along the Arkansas River, east of Reservoir Drive in Pueblo.

[cobirds] Aurora Reservoir etc, Arapahoe 5/1 kicks of DFO "Big Month"

2017-05-02 Thread David Suddjian
A DFO field trip on 5/1 kicked of DFO's May 2017 "Big Month". This endeavor
includes birds seen on DFO field trips in May within in a 9 county area
centered on the Denver Metro Area. You can read more on p. 9 of the DFO's
May "Lark Bunting":
http://dfobirds.org/LarkBunting/LB.pdf

And as field trip checklists are entered in eBird over the month, they will
populate an ongoing status report that can be viewed here (check back soon
if intial results are not yet showing) :
http://dfobirds.org/FieldTrips/Reports/BigYear.aspx

Anyway, *Mallard* kicked off the Big Month as our first species, flying
over our 5:30 am meeting spot. And we rounded off the day with 82 species.
Off and running!

Our main morning stop was Aurora Reservoir. Highlights included 4 *White-winged
Scoters*, *Common Loon*, 4 *Am. Avocets*, 17 *Willets*, 1 *Marbled Godwit*,
8 *Sanderlings*, 2 *Semipalmated Sandpipers*, 6 *Wilson's Phalaropes*, a
straggling *Common Goldeneye*, 4 *Redheads*, *Peregrine Falcon*, 4 *Bonaparte's
Gulls*, 2 *Forster's Terns*, and 2 *Bald Eagles*. We enjoyed ogling
two *Pied-billed
Grebes* sitting in plain view on their floating nests in the west arm of
the lake, near the Marina.

We explored eastward along roads in the prairie, but there was very little
landbird migration, so this was not too exciting. In fact, other than
2 *Western
Kingbirds*, a few *White-crowned Sparrows* and, of course, *swallows*, we
found very few migrant landbirds out prairie-ward. We did have a nice tally
of 18 *Loggerhead Shrikes*, though.

We headed back to Cherry Creek State Park in the later afternoon to round
off the day, adding some more shorebirds, a smattering of landbirds and
such.

DFO invites birders to participate on the many free field trips of our May
Big Month effort. You can register for trips here:
