[cobirds] Tamarack, Jumbo and N. Sterling

2017-12-09 Thread William H Kaempfer
I headed out east this morning with John Vanderpoel to do a bit of pre-CBC
scouting (the official "count-week" period will begin on Monday for the first
CBCs of the year). Our first stop of the day was at Tamarack SWA where we were
joined by birder incognito. We searched the hedgerow at parking area 7
thoroughly and found at least two each of Red-bellied Woodpecker and Northern
Cardinal plus one Northern Mockingbird. On our way out, "BI" found kinglets
between areas 5 and 6. There were at least 3 Golden-crowned Kinglets and one
Ruby-crowned plus Northern Bobwhite.

John and I continued on toward Jumbo. A look at the woods along the S. Platte
where crossed by Red Lion Road turned up a flock of 23 Wild Turkey. The
closer we got to Jumbo, the more geese we saw, but our only Greater
White-fronted Geese (about 15) were on Little Jumbo. By the time we arrived at
Jumbo, the wind was whipping in from the northwest. That had caused almost all
of the waterfowl to seek shelter in the west bay (Logan) or northeast corner
(Sedgwick). The huge congregation of white geese (which seemed to be mainly
Snow) were at the west end, easily over 5,000. There were about 40 or so gulls
at the east end in Sedgwick by outlet structure, almost all were Ring-billed
except for one Black-legged Kittiwake (juv.) that kept flashing the bold M
across its wings and back at us.

We then proceed west to North Sterling Reservoir, still in strong wind. Here
there was another sizable white goose flock, as well as several hundred Common
Mergansers, but things stayed far away on the west shore where sun and wind
made detailed observation difficult. I promise to do better Thursday on the
Sterling CBC.

2017-12-09 Thread Rebecca L Laroche
Hello Jared-
There seem to be quite a few Harris' sparrows in the Denver area these
days. I saw the one posted in eBird by James McCall at Ralston Creek
(JeffCo) earlier this week, and today John Breitsch's DFO trip had one that
crossed the Denver-Adams line as we watched. Are there more this year, or
is it just me being woke? :)

Nick Komar and I were just at Rawhide Reservoir, north of Wellington, where
we had three probable adult Trumpeter Swans to the west of the viewing

steady.

[cobirds] N.Shrike--Cherry Crk Res (Arapahoe Co)

2017-12-09 Thread ROBERT RIGHTER
Hi:

On the west side of Cherry Creek wetlands, near the green marker labeled N
17.5 (39.37.1 & W104.50.2).

To my amazement the shrike began singing and to my further amazement I actually
got a relatively decent recording of it on my iPhone.

If anyone would like a copy of the shrike's vocalization send me an email.
Although at the moment I can’t seem to find the recording as it has apparently
traveled to some secret location within my iPhone, different than the Audio
Memo file? but it’s in my phone somewhere.

[cobirds] Boulder County, 75th Annual Christmas Bird Count

2017-12-09 Thread Pam Piombino
*BOULDER’S 75TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT*

Sunday, December 17, 2017

Coordinator: Bill Schmoker

Free, and open to all ability levels. If you can point to a bird, you're
in!

Start time: Depends on if you go out early for owls? Otherwise, after
sunrise.

Compilation dinner: 4:30 p.m.

The Boulder Circle of the CBC , sponsored by Boulder County Audubon, will
hold its 76th count on December 17th. All skill levels are welcome to join
teams and help the leaders by contributing their spotting and
identification skills. More experienced folks are urged lead a small group
to cover a specific area within the count circle. Anything can happen
(both weather and wildlife) and it usually does. If you prefer, you can
also stay at home and count at your feeder, while sipping mulled wine and
munching snacks

Following a full day in the field (for most of us), we celebrate together
at the compilation supper at the clubhouse at the Villa del Prado, 635
Mohawk Dr., Boulder, starting at 4:30. Boulder County Audubon will provide
a main dish and salad. We ask participants to bring potluck appetizers,
salads and desserts *AS WELL AS THEIR OWN PLATE, CUP AND SILVERWARE. THIS
YEAR WE WILL ASK YOU TO DONATE $1 IF YOU FORGET AND WE HAVE TO PROVIDE
THESE ITEMS*.
