[cobirds] Morning Doves Galore

2018-01-06 Thread Tina Jones
This is not about a Snowy Owl or a Harris's Hawk, but it is about Morning
Doves. I know the number of Doves I have had in my yard is no big deal if one
is living in Southern Colorado, but I have had more Morning Doves than usual in
my yard this winter. They arrived in pairs before 11/15. On 11/15, I had, 27
individuals [the MOST I have ever had for this date]. From 11/16 through most
of December, there were anywhere from 16-28 Morning Doves in my backyard. Just
as I thought this was already getting out of control, on DECEMBER 18, 37,
MORNING Doves were in my yard [an all time high ever]. Yikes!

The possible cause? I have not seen the usual Cooper's Hawk in the yard, hardly
at all, maybe 2-3 times in the last 3 months. Today I found scattered Morning
Dove feathers on the ground for the first time in ages. Maybe I will not see
the high numbers of Doves in my yard.

I always look for White-winged Dove but no luck yet.

Happy Birding!

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 1/6 (White-winged Crossbill, Prairie Warbler, and more)

2018-01-06 Thread Brandon
My plan was to bird with my uncle Van Truan, for a little while at Pueblo
Reservoir, we saw adult *Mew Gull* in the pool below the dam around 8am,
then went to South Shore Marina at Pueblo Reservoir. Lots of birds from
here, including: *Great Black-backed*, and *Lesser Black-backed Gulls* on
the tires, and a *White-winged Scoter*, a *Pacific Loon*, and a *Red-necked
Grebe* on the water. Just before 10am, we saw the continuing *Prairie
Warbler*, near the parking lot, just below Pueblo Reservoir dam, then we
heard from David Tonnessen about a male *White-winged Crossbill* at
Mountain View Cemetery (between Alcero and Beulah, off Northern Ave.) in
Pueblo. We went there, and saw it with him and others and I stayed in the
Cemetery helping groups of birders throughout the day, until after 4pm (I
enjoy helping people see birds, they want to see, when I can, and today was
a lot of FUN). My plan of a little morning birding, turned out to be a
very fun day, at a cemetery I never go to. *This White-winged Crossbill is
a first for Pueblo County*, and it was seen by nearly 30 people. Hopefully
the crossbill will hang around for the expected crowds tomorrow (I can
spend some time there tomorrow morning, to help people, starting at 8am).

There were lots of interesting birds seen today in Pueblo, besides the ones
I saw.

Thanks to David for letting me know about the Crossbill, and birding places
that others don't go to. Never know, what you might find if you go to
different places (I guess I need to go to different places once in while)!

[cobirds] John Martin Reservoir, Bent County

2018-01-06 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

I made a short visit to John Martin Reservoir today, my first since the
CBC on December 14th. I can report that unlike in December, the
reservoir is packed with an amazing number and diversity of birds.
Viewing conditions have iproved greatly now that the reservoir is about
80 percent frozen, concentrating birds and drawing in many Bald Eagles
and gulls.

I believe there are more than 100,000 white geese present now, and that
will probably mean there are thousands of Ross' Geese present. Common
Mergansers, missed on the CBC for the first time in December, now number
in the thousands. Common Goldeneyes are now "common".

There are hundreds of large gulls now present, and today among them I
picked out an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and first cycle Glaucous
Gull. I am sure more species are present.

Most surprising was the appearance of three American White Pelicans and
two Double-crested Cormorants, missed on the CBC. The best viewpoint is
Overlook Point on the north side of the Reservoir.

Sincerely,

Duane Nelson

Nearly 30 people have seen this bird. It likes the spruce comes in the
middle of the cemetery. Hope it is present tomorrow, I think it should be.
Great find David. Sometimes feeding near Red-breasted Nuthatches. The
call it gives the most is similar to a Red-breasted Nuthatch.

[cobirds] Teller country Rosy Finches follow-up

2018-01-06 Thread Kevin Ash
Today, I headed back to the same spot I found the Rosy Finches on Wednesday
- this time with my camera. I was hoping for an easy find, given that I
found them on what appeared to be a feeding station in someone's yard that
they seemed to like. No such luck. I drove all of CR 861 and 5 miles, out
and back of CR 86 and could not relocate them. I also drove some of the
mining roads and some of Gold Camp Road but only came home with a few Raven
sightings.

I was up there a couple hours earlier today, FWIW. NB: I sent my email on
Wednesday afternoon shortly after spotting the finches, but it apparently
did not get approved until yesterday.

[cobirds] Fremont, Pueblo Counties 1-5

2018-01-06 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Yesterday I did my first Southern circle of the year,
In Fremont County I had Pinyon Jays on the road east of Brush Hollow
Reservoir, and had a breakfast burrito at Coyote's Coffee Den in Penrose.
In Canon City highlights were Rufous-crowned Sparrow at Tunnel Drive, and
Western Screech-Owl on the Riverwalk. No Sapsuckers in three locations I
checked. I went over to Valco Ponds east side to scope the beautiful
Eurasian Wigeon (new fence, gate, sign, and they mean it. It's ok to park
just off the road). Some Canvasbacks, Cacklers, and a single Greater
White-fronted Goose were among the assortment on the ice.

In Pueblo County at the reservoir there was the huge Greater Black-backed
Gull, one Lesser Black-backed Gull, several Herring and Thayer's Gulls. I
didn't see reported Mew Or Glaucous gulls. Interestingly weird bird
behavior of the day went to a pair of Wilson's Snipes at the base of the
spillway, walking just above the waterline, picking something off of the
concrete. At one point they started crawling up the dam a foot or so,
seemingly unacceptable behavior for a Snipe. On the way back through Pueblo
I visited an area that Brandon Percival told me about a few years ago, to
look for White-winged Dove. I've seen them every year since, and it was
crazy...all up and down the surrounding streets were lots of Eurasian
Collared-Doves, and in this one tree, five doves, all White-winged.

I'd seen the Red-breasted Sapsucker in Colorado Springs (El Paso Co) last
week, I went looking for it again just to study it vs. just mark it down
among the birding paparazzi (which includes me). Stunningly beautiful bird,
massive bill, but works quietly like the other Sapsuckers I've observed. It
mostly accessed existing well holes. Lastly I went to look for the reported
Varied Thrush without success, at 4 p.m. it was shady and cool, other than
a Brown Creeper and some Chickadees the birds were not active.

First time I've been out full-on this year, really fun day.
