[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 5-7-18

2018-05-07 Thread Meredith . McBurney
Busy early again today, and then everything went quiet minutes before a
Cooper's Hawk came through. Never picked up again. Banded 10 and recaught
2 from prior years:

Dusky Flycatcher 1 (FOS flycatcher)
House Wren 4
Yellow Warbler 1, banded in 2016 and recaught in 2017
Spotted Towhee 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Lesser Goldfinch 2 (probable pair, FOS)
Brown-headed Cowbird 1, banded 2016 and recaught 2017

Come visit! Station is open daily, weather permitting, through the end of
May, except for May 10-12 and 28. We open nets about 6:30 and close around
noon. If you would like to visit on a weekend, you must pre-register - go
to the Audubon Society of Greater Denver website. Perhaps the best time for
birders to visit is early in the morning during the week - fewer people and
more birds! (School groups arrive each day between 9:30 and 10:30.)

[cobirds] Wed. May 9, Pella Crossing and Surrounding Areas with, "Davis"

2018-05-07 Thread Pam Piombino
This field trip is sponsored by Boulder County Audubon
Pella Crossing and Surrounding Areas

   - May 9, 2018 08:30am - 12:00pm
   - Pella Crossing

Leader: Ray “Davis”

Take a bird watching hike in this area that was badly flooded in 2013, but
now reopen to the public after major restoration. This series of ponds and
marshes can be very productive, especially as we near the height of spring
migration. You should find an assortment of water birds including waders,
duck, coots, mergansers and pelicans. Common passerines include waxwings,
nighthawks and kingfishers. There is a large Great Blue Heron Rookery and
many a raptor sailing overhead.

Meet at the Pella Crossing parking lot on the east side of 75th Street,
just south of Hygiene. For information, feel free to call or email Davis:

[cobirds] Probable Yellow-bellied Flycatcher - SW Denver

2018-05-07 Thread Doug Ward
While diligently working away at my "desk" (aka dining room table) this morning
(Mon., 7 May 18), noticed a small, active Empinonax in a maple just outside our
window in southwest Denver near Huston Park (Denver Co., CO).  Initial naked
eye impression was a Cordilleran due to its general greenish coloration and
obvious eye ring and wingbars.  However, once I grabbed my binoculars for
unfortunately a very brief and obscured view, noticed it's "jizz"  was closer
to a Least with its large round head and short bill, though tail and wings
seemed longer than this species when it flew.  This bird had a bold, complete
round eyering which was yellowish white, greenish-grey head and at least pale
yellow underneath.  Unfortunately the back, wings, belly, and undertail coverts
were never seen well.  I don't have a ton of experience with this species, but
came to the conclusion it was very likely a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER. I did
give chase, but have yet to refind it definitively.  After about twenty minutes
did find two (2) Empids in a neighbor's maple, one of which was likely this
bird, but again too brief a view and lost it.  To add to this excitement, the
other Empidonax in the tree appeared to be a GRAY FLYCATCHER - makes no sense
at all that these two would be together.
Anyway, it's that time of the year, so about anything can show as demonstrated
in this weekends posts.  I will keep the group posted if this flycatcher shows
back up.  If you'd like specifics on location, please contact me separately.
Good Birding,Doug

[cobirds] Protections for T species at John Martin Reservoir

2018-05-07 Thread SeEttaM
Note: Arrgh, I sent this twice over the weekend but it got rejected for
being too large by Google groups. So I will send the photos I note in a
separate email.
I saw the post "Piping Plover habitat at John Martin Reservoir may not
sustain population" too late Friday to get hold of any CDOW staff so
Saturday afternoon I drove out to John Martin Reservoir. I spoke with the
Park Ranger who was pretty familiar with the Piping Plover and Least
Terns. He said that CDOW intend to continue to put up nesting barriers and
signage as they have in the past but that they have found any of the birds
starting to nest yet. He further said that a person has been hired to
manage the nesting T birds at John Martin Res and added that this person
is also assigned to check on the Queens Reservoirs (there is plenty of
water in most of the series of lakes where Piping Plover and Least Tern
have nested in the past).

I didn't have time to drive the north shore but did drive over to the
southeast shore main road. I was happy to see that this road was blocked
about hundred feet back from the current shoreline (water is very high) and
previous 2 track entrances are also well blocked so at least vehicles
cannot access the south shore from the eastern end west to the private
property. Below is a photo of that. I did drive down to entry to private
property along the south and saw a vehicle on shore (see 2nd pic)

I will be following up on the issue of maintaining habitat this week.
Nesting T species in the Arkansas Valley are a high prioity to the
Arkansas Valley Audubon Society.

[cobirds] FOS migrants, CSR, El Paso Co, Mon

2018-05-07 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBIrders,

Nothing really unusual at Clear Spring Ranch banding this morning, but there
was a small arrival, and several FOS’s.

FOS Western Wood-pewee - earliest seen in last 5 springs I’ve been banding here.
FOS Gray Catbird (and was banded by a different group at CSR prior to 2016)
FOS MacGillivray’s Warbler (ad M) - earliest one banded at CSR in 5 years
FOS Female Com Yellowthroat - all those seen and banded previously were males.
FOS Killdeer - really not rare, but it was the first

Still haven’t seen a female Yellow Warbler - just singing and chasing males so
far.

Good birding,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Probable Northern mockingbird - Arapahoe Cty

2018-05-07 Thread modise
While biking the Platte River, west side, just north of Prince Street in
Littleton, at about 10:15 this morning, I saw what I’m pretty sure was a
Northern mockingbird. It had large white wing patches and white on both sides
of tail. Could have been a shrike I suppose, but I immediately thought
“mockingbird”! That was in Arapahoe County.

[cobirds] Marbled Godwit [Weld]

2018-05-07 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

This morning, 4 Marbled Godwit .3m on Weld CR 13 north of intersection of
Weld CR 86 and Weld CR 13 in large playa/pond on east. This playa/pond has
breached its banks with recent rains and has nice flooded fields around it
as well. Also, had lots of Wilson's Phalaropes, some American Avocets, and
a few "peeps" too far away to ID on east side of playa/pond.

Other items of note:

   - Walked Greeley's Poudre River Trail from Island Grove to 25th St (2.0
   miles)--got 40 species nothing uncommon
   - My Nunn yard had banner day over weekend for "sparrow" family species
(12): Green-tailed and Spotted Towhee, Vesper (lots), Chipping (lots),
   Clay-colored (lots), Brewer's (lots), Lark (lots), Lincoln's, White-crowned
(lots), and Grasshopper Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco and Lark Bunting
   - Wilson's Snipe displaying

   (video) [Beebe Draw]
   - Fledged Killdeer
chick (early?) [Weld CR 84 Marsh]
   - All photos from weekend [first 42 photos
