[cobirds] Flycatcher, Larimer County

2019-08-13 Thread Dave Hyde
Hello CObirders,
This bird pictured below showed up today and I got this one photo. I think
it is a Western wood-pewee. Am I right on this one? Thanks for any assistance
– Dave Hyde/Drake. Larimer cty.

[cobirds] Rehabbed Chimney Swift fledglings in Pueblo need home

2019-08-13 Thread Leon Bright
COBirders-- A local rehabber has some young Chimney Swifts that need a
colony to grow up with but no one knows of any in the city of Pueblo. She
is hoping that there may be colonies in the Arkansas Valley or other nearby
areas. If anyone can help with this, please contact me directly. Thanks!!

[cobirds] shorebird habitat observations - Southeast Colorado

2019-08-13 Thread David Suddjian
Two recent visits to SE Colorado (Otero, Bent, Kiowa, Crowley counties)
found shorebird habitat to be very limited. All of the reservoirs I looked
at were quite full (or dry in the case of Lower Queens). Of course, I did
not go everywhere. John Martin was less full but habitat conditions not so
interesting. No water around Van's Marsh. Last summer was much more
shorebird friendly down there.

The only places we found shorebirds were these:

1. A flooded fallow ag field along the north side of Hwy 194 northeast of
La Junta in Otero had good habitat on 8/5, with 12 species of shorebirds
and nearly 160 individuals, including a Mountain Plover.
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S5876
But by 8/12 it had dried considerably and few shorebirds remained. Birding
this highway edge site requires caution.

2. At Ordway in Crowley the southeast corner of the Lake Meredith Feedlot
was flooded on 8/12, attracting a moderate number of shorebirds and lots of
activity. This is best viewed from near the south end of Lane 20. The
nearby "sewage pond" was full.

3. Just down the road, as viewed from the east end of CR G, the near shore
of Lake Meredith offered interesting shorebird and other waterbird habitat
on 8/12.

Several ponds and some flooded fields near Hwy 71 in Lincoln appeared to be
rain-filled but appeared bird free passing by at hwy speeds.

[cobirds] Loggerhead shrike, Erie

2019-08-13 Thread Paula Hansley
CObirders,
I saw the first Loggerhead shrike early yesterday afternoon that I’ve seen in
Boulder County in a long time. It was hunting in a large prairie dog town on
County Open Space just south of Hwy 7 and east of north 120th Ave. You can
access the area by parking in a small parking lot off of Flagg Drive.

There was a surprising number of other species there including singing Blue
grosbeaks, Lark sparrows, and multiple Western kingbirds and Say’s phoebes.

Sorry for the late posting!

Re: [cobirds] Best playas for shorebirds, fall migration, 2019

2019-08-13 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Joe,
I can respond with negative information: the pond that harbored the Josh
Bruening's long-staying Common Gallinule near the Schware Unit of Wellington
State Wildlife Area on the north side of Larimer CR60 w of CR3 was completely
dry last Sunday (8/11). Morris Res, a little further to the west on the south
side of CR60 has a shallow body of water that might be worth checking (it had
Wilson's Phalaropes and avocets a month ago). I did not scrutinize this the
other day as my mission that date was scouting an upcoming sparrow field trip.

Chuck Hundertmark recently posted a note* on COBirds about
promising plains playas that had good habitat and had attracted shorebirds.
Thanks, Chuck!
Notes like that from other "plains wanderers" (apologies to Pedionomus
torquatus) are welcome on Cobirds
and will help wader watchers seek and find.

* August 10th There were two Black-bellied Plovers at the Morgan CR 23 & HH
playas this afternoon. The birds were spotted on a field trip led by Bran
Andres as part of Denver Field Ornithologists’ shorebird workshop.
Shorebird activity appeared to be picking up in the Weld, Logan and Morgan
County playas and ponds, though water remains high in some ponds, limiting
available shore, and some playas remain dry.
A small pool on Morgan CR23 south of CR II had a plethora of Solitary
Sandpipers (10-20).

[cobirds] N Waterthrush, CSR, El Paso Co, Tues

2019-08-13 Thread Steve Brown
Hey COBirders,

While numbers have been down so far this month banding at Clear Spring Ranch,
fall migration is officially underway.
Today I banded the first Northern Waterthrush of the season (hatch year bird)
and the first two Wilson’s Warblers (hy female, adult female). Not rare, but
fun to finally see!

Also, Yellow Warblers continue, with 25 banded in the last week. They will be
mostly gone by Labor Day.

FYI if it is clear tonight, it is prime to scan the face of the moon with a
spotting scope and watch the migrant passerines cross the face. Too fun.

[cobirds] Shorebirds at S. Platte at McKay Rd (Adams County)

2019-08-13 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
This morning there was a congregation of shorebirds on a mudflat in an almost
empty reservoir between 96th and 104th Avenue on McKay Rd. Many Pelicans,
Cormorants, Avocets, Snowy Egrets, and 2 Great Egrets. Smaller numbers of
Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpipers, Semipalmated Sandpipers, and Western
Sandpipers. A Peregrine Falcon was sitting on the western shore watching the
action. An adult Redtail with 2 juveniles was hiding in the grass on the north
shore. To see this, park at Elaine Valente Park and walk east to the bike
path, then south about 1/3 mile on the bike trail along the western shore of
the Platte.
