[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 10/3/19

2019-10-03 Thread Robert Snowden
We had a little more activity on the penultimate day of the fall season at
Chico Basin, though once again we had to deal with some suboptimal weather.
The morning started relatively busy before an steady south breeze slowed
things down and resulted in early closures for our most productive nets. We
finished with 22 newly-banded birds and 3 recaptures, but not much variety,
as only 4 species were caught. As with some recent days, there was pretty
good thrush and kinglet representation.

Our summary:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 7
Wilson's Warbler 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon/intergrade 4
Hermit Thrush 9 + 3 recaptures.

Visitors are welcome at our banding stations. Registration is required for
groups. For more information and hours of operation, visit
birdconservancy.org/birdbanding.

Tomorrow (Friday) will be the final day of the season. We'll be opening
nets at 7:00 AM and closing at noon, weather permitting. Come visit!

[cobirds] Green-tailed Towhee & C. Nighthawk - Arapahoe

2019-10-03 Thread Jared Del Rosso
Two of my favorite birds remained in Centennial, at least through today. A
Green-tailed Towhee has been in my yard for a week or so. A Common
Nighthawk, meanwhile, headed south over E. Panama Dr / Streets of
Southglenn near Arapahoe & University around dusk. It was low and seemed to
come from somewhere local, rather than further north, but I might be
misjudging that. This morning, in the same general area as the nighthawk,
was a lone Turkey Vulture, another of my favorites.

The nighthawk sighting was especially well-timed (for me...can't say for
the bird). As I casually birded deKoevend Park, I lamented that we so
rarely know when our final, fall sightings of our favored birds will be.
Then I recalled, several years ago, a late nighthawk sighting (October 10)
that I had at the park, and how it was late enough that I knew that it
would be goodbye for a time. Minutes later, the nighthawk. Late enough,
once more, that I suspect that's it. I wished the bird well and lost it in
the lights of traffic.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Rogers Grove Park, Longmont (Boulder Co.) 10/3/19

2019-10-03 Thread Colin Woolley
We were rained out on Tuesday so today was our only day of banding at
Rogers Grove Park this week. It remains fairly quiet here, with just 6
birds banded for the day, and no recaptures. The Wilson's Warblers seem to
have moved on, replaced by some Yellow-rumped Warblers (though not in the
nets yet). Our highlight for the day was a 'Eastern' Downy Woodpecker of
the *medianus* subspecies, with major white spotting on the wing coverts.
Here are the totals for the day:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 3
Hermit Thrush - 1
'Eastern' Downy Woodpecker - 1

Next week will be our final week of banding at Rogers Grove Park. This
station runs on Tues/Thurs only. We'll be opening nets around 7:10 and
continuing for 5 hours, weather permitting. Feel free to stop by and visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Barr Lake, 10/3/19

2019-10-03 Thread Meredith McBurney
Today we got done in by wind (which wasn't even in the weather report).
We opened a few nets for 1 1/2 hours, banded 1 House Wren, 1 Hermit
Thrush, 2 Orange-crowned Warblers and 1 White-crowned Sparrow, and then
threw in the towel for the morning. Looking forward to better weather
tomorrow.

We are now opening nets at 7:40 and should have birds back at the station
by 8:20. We are closing nets most days at 11:40. We are open 6 days per
week, Tuesday-Sunday, through October 13. All of this is weather
permitting! School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time
to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Re: News from Barr Lake Adams Co 10/2

2019-10-03 Thread Adam Vesely
Just a friendly reminder about shore access at Barr Lake: birders can only
access the shore *north* of the bird banding station. South of the banding
station is considered the "Wildlife Refuge" and you must stay on marked
trails. While they don't seem to enforce this much, I've confirmed with
several of the Park Rangers and this is also depicted on the park maps.

[cobirds] Leucistic Common Bushtit, Boulder County

2019-10-03 Thread Paula Hansley
CObirders,
This little bird was so cute! It was in a small flock of common bushtits,
ruby-crowned kinglets, and blue-gray gnatcatchers. Images are posted on the CFO
Facebook page.

Location: on edge of large prairie dog town accessed from County Line Rd. Park
at Flagg Ranch parking lot between Baseline and South Boulder Roads. Cross Coal
Creek and follow the trail about 1/8 mile to south, past where oil maintenance
workers are working and then head west over to the bank of Coal Creek. The
flock was in a willow tree down in the deeply incised streambed.

[cobirds] News from Barr Lake Adams Co 10/2

2019-10-03 Thread Robert Righter
Because one can walk out on the sand towards the water's edge, makes it very
easy for close viewing of the birds.

Just in the southeast section:
3 American Golden-Plovers, (at least one was a Jv.)
50+ Killdeer
2 Marbled Godwits
3 Jv. Sanderlings
20 Baird’s Sandpipers
3-4 Pectorial Sandpipers
1 Least Sandpiper
20+ Forster’s Gulls

1000’s of Barn Swallows and vast numbers of other regularly occurring
waterbirds were present
If there was more time I’d visit Meredith at Conservancy Banding station. It
would have been fun to see the Philadelphia Vireo

Lots going on at Barr Lake, Come on out!
