[cobirds] Ruff-TimnathReservoir-Larimer County

2020-09-08 Thread Josh Bruening
All,

First, let me report a Red Knot at Fossil Creek Reservoir that I found at
noon today. Luckily this bird was seen by many people. Better photos were
taken than the ones I included on my Ebird checklist.

Second, there is some question to the veracity of my report of a Ruff
earlier this morning at Timnath Reservoir. I would like to put out there
first that I am more than willing to go to school on my identification of a
Ruff vs. Buff-Breasted Sandpiper. Therefore, I would love to defer to the
experts. However, several things were brought up that questioned the
sighting. Mainly, the tertial feathers. Also, the bill was called into
question. Before I mount my defense, I would like to acknowledge that I
have exactly one experience each with both of these specie.

The reason that I called this a Ruff was the crazy dark head feathers and
thick bill. Also, the bill was thick at the base and bi-colored from what
I could see. The bill was also longer than what I would expect from a
Buff-breasted. Buff-breasted bills are short and dainty. Beyond the the
bill and the head feathers was the fact that it was larger than the
Killdeer and Lesser Yellowlegs nearby. I'm not sure how just the tertials
is a good enough indicator to species at that point. A Buff-breasted
should be far smaller. Again, in a time of molt, I'm not clear as to why
the tertials are the determining factor here. I don't usually "defend" a
sighting but am at odds with this one. Further, if this was "just" a bird
that got beat up or stained by the storm. I don't get it. This bird
looked like a Muppet. If that storm was equivalent to a 15 round bout with
Mike Tyson, I get it. But it didn't look like it to me.

I truly hope this bird stuck around and can be refound. Truthfully, I
don't care what it is. I think it's a Ruff. Either way, it's a great bird
for Larimer County in the fall.

Bird is the word!

[cobirds] Announcements / Update from CFO

2020-09-08 Thread Nicholas Komar
Dear Colorado birders:

I recently received my copy of Colorado Birds with a cover photo of a gorgeous
male Rufous Hummingbird taken by John Rawinski! This will be the final issue of
the journal edited by Christy Payne, and I wanted to extend my gratitude to her
for all of her hard work! You may not know it, but just a few months after she
agreed to edit Colorado Birds in early 2018, Christy and her husband moved to
Michigan, where Christy has family, and in 2019 she gave birth to their son.
It's a tribute to her commitment to CFO that she was able to continue producing
the journal in the midst of so much change! The summer issue includes
information about the new Colorado Parks and Wildlife rules for accessing State
Wildlife Areas, a report from the CBRC, two articles dealing with American
Kestrel behavior and an insightful report from Scott Yanco on his research into
Flammulated Owl movements!

Christy will be succeeded by Peter Burke, who will take over as Managing Editor
of the journal. In this new role that he proposed to the CFO board of directors
earlier this year, Peter will recruit and lead an editorial team to produce the
journal beginning with the Fall 2020 issue. The board supports this new
approach, and we believe it will help to ensure that CFO continues to produce
one of the best regional birding journals in the country.

This news was first announced at the CFO annual meeting, which due to the
ongoing pandemic, was conducted virtually on July 25 using Zoom. For those of
you who missed the meeting, some other shifts in CFO leadership were announced.
Diana Beatty has agreed to step into the position of CFO Secretary, and Alison
Hilf will join the CFO board as a Director. In addition, Megan Jones Patterson,
who had been serving in a non-voting role as Volunteer Coordinator, has been
elevated to Director, and Joe Kipper has joined the board as Youth Ambassador.

Quarterly CFO field trips remain on hold due to Covid-19, however, we will host
quarterly Zoom meetings instead. The next scheduled meetings will be:
>>> Saturday 7 pm September 19 - Birding is Best in the Right Weather with
>>> Bryan Guarente
>>> Saturday 7 pm December 5 - Colorado Christmas Bird Counts

Nick Komar, Fort Collins
CFO President

[cobirds] CBCs?

2020-09-08 Thread dickfilby
Duane, Gary, good info/commentaryMy two cents:  So long as Social Distancing is
followed, I think there should be no reason to cancel the birding aspect of
CBCs. Indeed, it may result in better coverage as birders could actually spread
out more widely over the count circle. However the associated social gatherings
that often form part of Count Day could well be considered too risky.. plus,
car pooling would be an unwise option, whether 'allowed' or not.  However,
neither of these would seem to this birder at least to be a reason to not run
the CBCsFingers crossedStay healthy allDick FilbyCarbondale, COSent from my

[cobirds] Sloans Lake storm fallout (Marbled Godwit, Stilt Sandpiper) Denver County

2020-09-08 Thread PH Stoltz

On a quick lunch run to Sloans Lake, the storm fallout was impressive. I
saw a Marbled Godwit and a Stilt Sandpiper. Several more sandpipers as
well, including a Least, and potentially a Pectoral (need to check my
pictures).

Non-rarities, but still of interest: a big group of yellow-headed
blackbirds, an even bigger group of killdeer (I counted at least 20), three
grebes (I'm happy to call them eared, but did not make a careful ID), one
empid that I couldn't ID hopping along the rocks.

This was all on the north shore, between Wolff and Sheridan.

I'll get an ebird list with some mediocre pictures posted soon.

Thanks,

Peter Stoltz

[cobirds] Timnath Ruff -- looks to be stained Buff-breast

2020-09-08 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All
Several folks from elsewhere in the USA have chimed in that the Timnath Ruff
looks more like a beaten and battered BB Sandpiper. Most notably, this bird
does not have the long tertials of a Ruff. The bill shape is off as well.

Re: [cobirds] RUFF at Timnath Reservoir-Larimer County

2020-09-08 Thread Nicholas Komar
For those of you who wish to look for the reported Ruff, here are some notes on
accessing Timnath Reservoir. The town park at south end (accessed from CR-40)
is posted “permit only” but FC Audubon has negotiated for birder access. The
puddle hosting the Ruff is not visible from the park, and requires a 20-30 min
hike.

A better option is to park in the Wildwing neighborhood. Access from CR1 (aka
Weld CR13). Drive as far west as possible where construction of houses has not
yet started. Here you can walk along north shoreline to the “shorebird puddle”
in 10 minutes.

Please do not flush this bird for photography.

[cobirds] Eared vs. Horned Grebe ID

2020-09-08 Thread Christian Nunes
Hi all,

I was discussing some grebe (Eared vs. Horned) ID with some birders this
morning and I thought it would be a good time to share this resource with the
wider community:

https://cobirds.org/Publications/ColoradoBirds/InTheScope/26.pdf

I'd like to urge birders to be very cautious about IDing Horned Grebes in the
month of September. Eared Grebes have rapidly molted out of their alternate
plumage over the past few weeks and many are now in a mostly alternate state.
This is the point at which these two species most frequently get confounded.
Recent reports from local birding spots are assuming that a black-and-white
grebe must be a Horned. But the timing is off by a month. Outside the New
World, the Eared Grebe is known as the 'Black-necked Grebe'. This name is much
more helpful as far as the ID goes. Instead of focusing on the face pattern,
look at the front of the neck. If it's dark/dusky then it's an Eared, even if
the cheeks are bright white contrasting with a dark crown.

[cobirds] CSR Chipping Sparrow note

2020-09-08 Thread Steve Brown
Hi again,

I just thought of an interesting CHSP observation to share from this week from
Clear Spring Ranch.

Early in August I was surprised that about 95% of the Chipping Sparrows I was
catching were adults, or at least After Hatch Year birds, with many females
with recovering brood patches. This continued for a couple weeks, then things
were about 50-50 in mid-August.

Now I am seeing about 95% juvenile birds, with only about 10 adults this week,
with 350-400 juvenile birds.

FYI.

[cobirds] RUFF at Timnath Reservoir-Larimer County

2020-09-08 Thread Josh Bruening
All,

First, thanks to Nick K for getting the word out about the Ruff. Not a bad
bird to make you feel rewarded for being out on a morning like this rather
than feeling somewhat silly and nuts. I guess the truth is I feel both.
I have listed below my Ebird checklist that has the photos I was able to
obtain. Not great, but identifiable. The wind was howling pretty good so
keeping my hands steady with my phone over my scope wasn't easy. And my
phone kept shutting off due to the cold. The FOCO mob is headed out to
find it as far as I can tell and they have better cameras than I do.
Hopefully, someone gets better shots. Sanderling was another good bird. I
also refound the Mourning Warbler and American Redstart that Nick K and Joe
K found at Timnath yesterday. If anyone tries for this bird, please allow
it some space.

Bird is the word!

[cobirds] Barr Lake and Last Chance on Labor Day

2020-09-08 Thread Dave Cameron
Just knocking around hoping for fallout based on Bryan Guarente's comments
on wind shift the other day, we went East for more birds and fewer people.

We did see the Philadelphia Vireo at the visitors' center at Barr Lake, and
fyi, there is another out around mile marker three. Also out back there
were Chipping Sparrows, 1 Townsend's and several Wilson's Warblers, 2
Cordilleran Flycatchers, a handful of Song Sparrows, many Am. Goldfinches
and Chickadees, etc.

Back at the Visitors' center picnic area we had a Hammond's Flycatcher as
well.

Out on the sand flats, shorebirds were few and distant-- Least and Baird's
Sandpipers. Many Gulls, seemingly all Ring-billed and California, plus a
small handful of Franklins. We didn't chase the Buff-breasted of the
Jaeger (we were actually hoping for Western Sandpipers, but no luck).
Several Avocets as well, all in winter plumage.

Last Chance (Washington County) was a bustling city of migrants. Nothing
rare or unexpected, but lots of activity. Dozens of Lark Sparrows, many
Wilson's Warblers, hundreds of Yellow-headed Blackbirds, 1 russet-backed
Swainson's Thrush, 1 Brown Thrasher, 1 Gray Catbird, some Western
Meadowlarks on the phone lines (there were none back at Barr Lake area), 1
Willow Flycatcher and 1 Eastern Phoebe, 1 Lincoln's Sparrow, many Barn
Swallows, etc.

The drive back was exceedingly smokey due to the wind change. That plus
the precip should make Last Chance very interesting for fallout today and
tomorrow, I would imagine.

[cobirds] Migrant Numbers, CSR, El Paso Co, Tues.

2020-09-08 Thread Steven Brown

Hey COBirders,

Not numbers for today - I am sitting inside for the first morning since 8/1 !!
What to do with myself ???

Last week Meredith M. opined that things might be heading my way after a great
day of Wilson’s Warblers for her at Barr Lake. The following is a summary for
the weekend:

Friday 9/4 was exceptional for numbers - 152 birds netted - 78 Chipping
Sparrows (CHSP), 22 Wilson’s Warblers (WIWA), 6 Lark Sparrows (LASP), 8 Vesper
Sparrows (VESP), 8 Lincoln’s Sparrows (LISP), and a bunch of mixed Clay-colored
(CCSP), Brewer’s (BRSP), Gambel’s White-crowned (GWCS), and Savannah Sparrows
(SAVS). One of my busiest days ever.

Saturday 9/5 - 89 birds, 41 CHSP, 15 mixed CCSP, BRSP, LASP, SAVS, LISP, VESP,
a N Waterthrush, 25 WIWA, and a FOS Cassin’s Vireo.

Sunday 9/6 - 79 birds, 38 CHSP, 20 mixed sparrows as above, a MacGillivray’s
Warbler, Orange-crowned, Yellow and only 8 WIWA. 2 Blue Grosbeak, FOS
Red-breasted Nuthatch (2), FOS Green-tailed Towhee. (As you can see - if CHSP
are down, all numbers are reduced significantly)

Monday 9/7 - were birds fleeing the coming front??? I had a bunch, and while
numbers appeared normal-busy in the early morning, they jumped up after 10:00.
I caught 95 birds between 10-11!!!
209 birds netted (whew), 128 CHSP, 15 LISP, 8 CCSP, 9 VESP, 20 mixed other
sparrows, Gambel’s White-crowned (2), and FOS Mountain White-crowned, All
juvenile WCSP so far. Also another N Waterthrush, 3 late YEWA, FOS Townsend’s
Warbler, FOS Ruby-crowned Kinglet, FOS Dusky Flycatcher, 31 WIWA. 3 Blue
Grosbeak, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Lazuli Bunting (all late-ish).

Today would have been a blow-out, plus diminishing temps, and forecast for
Wednesday is early wet and 20’s, so I am expecting nets to be frozen, with
little chance for a thaw in the morning. - Guess I’ll sleep in again!!

As I have said in earlier posts - numbers are phenomenal this fall. Much more
than I would have ever expected. Why? Fires up North? Still standing oats
across from my net array? Dry conditions everywhere for early movements? Don’t
know. I’m just collecting data, and there is a lot of it.

So far I've netted about 2300 birds (Aug 1-Sept 7 - My best previous busy
FALLS were 2350 and 2030 for 8/1-10/31!) 60% are CHSP, of which I only band a
dozen/day to reserve bands and not stress about trying to band them all with
good numbers of other birds in hand as well. Only 5 CHSP have been re-captured
so far. They seem to keep moving.

Some numbers so far, especially for birds that taper-off quickly after Labor
Day -

CHSP - 1225, 400 banded (record high since 2012)
CCSP - 32
BRSP 68 (record high)
LASP - 140 (record high)
VESP 52 (record high)
SAVS 34 (2nd highest number)
Lazuli Bunting - 86 (record high)
Blue Grosbeak 35 (record high)
Northern Waterthrush 15 (3rd highest)
Yellow Warbler 88 (a high-average number)
YB Chat - 15 (about average)
Gray Catbird 17 (about average)
Common Yellowthroat 35 (about average)
House Wren 75 (near record high)
Mixed Flycatchers (WW Pewee, Willow, Trail’s, other small empids) 28 (record
high)

What’s missing???
Song Sparrow - usually I have 15-20 by now, so far only 4.

Well, every fall is different. and surprise…. 2020 is more different than ever
(in about every way I can think of!!!)

Hope this is interesting, have fun, stay safe, and more soon,

 Hi all

Forgot to mention many hundreds of Weld County landfill gulls were resting
across the street (south side of Hwy 14) in the tilled fields. Able to pick
out Ring-billed, Franklin's, California and Herring Gull.

[cobirds] Weekend of Birding/Weld

2020-09-08 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Ovenbird at Crow Valley Campground was best bird of weekend for me! Photos
at website below now. Also, of note, we had at least two Gray Flycatchers,
I assume, both wagged tail downward when perched. Photos, too, if someone
wants to confirm the flycatcher. Crow Valley also hosted Spotted Towhee,
usual warblers (Wilson's, Yellow, Common Yellowthroat), Gray Catbird,
Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Prairie Falcon, Swainson's
Thrush and empids.

Galeton ponds at Weld CR 74/61 hosted Franklin's and California Gull, Stilt
Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher and Baird's Sandpiper. It is draining down
and the usual spit of land is where birds are resting now.

White-winged Dove continues to appear in yard-it's got to be in Town of
Nunn somewhere.

Wood Duck at Cozzens Lake.

Crom Lake received another ration of water so no more shoreline for about a
month. Three Chukar and one Northern Bobwhite (again).
