RE: [cobirds] Joe Roller

2021-02-03 Thread smka2
Cobirders,

Thanks to Bill for keeping Joe in our memories. Don't forget there is a way to
help keep Joe in our memories in perpetuity (as well as in Denver, Pueblo,
Grand Junction...) by making a pledge for the 2021 Joe Roller Memorial Green
Big Year. The proceeds from the big year pledges will fund the Joe Roller
Memorial Grant to support bird research in Colorado. Scott Somershoe has been
out braving the elements and cycling many miles to add species to the Big Year
list. You can track his progress on his blog at
jrmemorialgreenbigyear.blogspot.com. If you haven't yet, take a moment to make
a pledge and join those that have committed to establishing this grant in Joe's
name.

start of 2021 I remembered him saying that he liked to try to see 100 species
in January so I thought I’d try it this year-I fell 13 species short but what
the heck-here’s thinking of you Joe! Bill Fink. Longmont

Re: [cobirds] Re: Aggressive Owl in Superior

2021-02-03 Thread Peter Ruprecht
Just a bit more background on this situation in case anyone is interested.
I live pretty close to where the incidents happened.

At least three groups of people have had a GHO swoop down at them after
sunset in residential neighborhoods. In at least two cases, the owl hit a
child in the head hard enough to cause deep scratches or punctures. As I
understand it, all of the groups of people were aware of the owl's presence
prior to it swooping, and my impression is that in some cases they were
observing it from 100 feet or less.

These incidents happened over about a 10 day period. Two were in the same
neighborhood but one was over 500m away. Not sure if it's the same owl in
all cases.

Thanks for everyone's feedback both here and on the CFO FB page. I think a
common theme is that it is important to educate residents about the need to
respect raptors' space, especially when the birds are in territorial mode.
Just like we (or at least some of us!) have learned to respect the coyotes
that share our suburban areas.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Aggressive Owl in Superior

2021-02-03 Thread Scott
It is unlikely that  any Great Horned Owl would defend its nest before
the eggs have hatched.

The owls incubation is 35 days, at least.  This means that the owl would
have had to lay its eggs in late December. This has only been documented
a handful of times in Colorado.

I find it hard to believe that the bird was defending anything. It is
better to believe that the entire thing was a misunderstanding.

When near a Great Horned Owl, the birds will fly away from the
intruder.  Sometimes they will appear to be flying at the intruder. They
are a heavy bird.  Due to their weight, when they take off they drop a
few feet before flapping hard enough to gain elevation.  My guess is
that the bird was simply flying away from someone and they took it wrong.

A Great Horned Owl can capture a mouse while it is running. If they
wanted to hit someone they would. They wouldn't miss.

[cobirds] Re: On singing American Dippers

2021-02-03 Thread dgulb...@gmail.com
Went to Morrison today to see if I could find a singing dipper. (Hwy 74 is
closed, so I couldn't go up to Lair o'the Bear).
Found a dipper at the entrance to Morrison Park (right by the gauging
structure). He did a fair amount of "zeet"s and
once uttered the start of a song. I was able to watch him for a very long
time, since he hardly budged from the site.
He seemed extremely successful at finding food, since he brought up tiny
black things every time he dived. Even
though I was only 12' away with 8x42's, I couldn't tell if it was animal or
vegetable, but I assume the former. I finally
walked on, and when I came back an hour later he was still at the same
spot. Possibly the way the ice was formed it
served as a trap for food being washed downstream?

Agree. Seems better to let it be. Maybe warn hikers of that situation.

[cobirds] Status of Overlook at Rawhide Energy Station n of Ft Collins

2021-02-03 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
FYI, after driving up the Hamilton Reservoir a couple times in recent weeks and
finding the Overlook closed, I decided to call ahead today. I was told the
resident bison herd knocked the fence down bordering the Overlook and that
these animals currently have access to it. Thus, the closure. The person I
talked to said it would be closed for "some time", whatever that means.
