Re: [cobirds] Possible Slaty-backed Gull, Larimer

Most lariphiles agree some first cycle pale-headed gulls are challenging.
So much variation.
Can you you elaborate on those “checked boxes” you mention?

[cobirds] Fremont county, osprey

A pair of osprey were occupying the nest platform on Mackenzie Rd. today.
There are numerous Great Blue Herons on nests further south on Mackenzie

[cobirds] A goose trifecta - Akron -Washington County

2021-03-28 Thread 'DuWayne Worthington' via Colorado Birds
On my way to try and find the greater prairie chickens (which didn't
happen), I ran across 24 greater white-fronted geese, 120 snow geese, and
22 or so cackling geese in one of the farmer's fields on country road X
around 7:30 am. The cackling and greater white-fronted were mixed together
right by the road, and the snow geese were just behind them a little
further into the field.

[cobirds] Lagerman Res on a windy Sunday + E Kingbird

2021-03-28 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
A blustery walk around Lagerman Reservoir today yielded about 20 Ruddy
Ducks, a couple of Cinnamon Teal, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, about 6
Buffleheads, and about 20 Ring-necked Ducks. Both Osprey were present, as
were the two Bald Eagles nesting to the south. A male Northern Harrier was
hunting just west of the Osprey platform. The treat of the day was a FOS
Eastern Kingbird holding its own in the wind on the south side of the
reservoir.

WOW! Wind changed direction almost hourly, from the east then the west,
gusting to B6 out of the west. Almost calm at times, B2-3 common. Overcast
skies, improving during the day, but sun never really came out. Horizons
blue in all directions. Temps from 7.7C up to 16.1C, barometer falling

Very few flights of local birds. Trail is almost dry, still some muddy

Dinosaur Ridge - Denver Field Ornithologists information may be found at:

More site information at hawkcount.org:
https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=123

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome. HawkWatch at
Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM to around
3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading
east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west
side of the ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left,
head through the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the
crest of the ridge. (Distance: 0.56 miles, Elevation gain: 259 feet)
