[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Station, 5/23 & 24/21

2021-05-24 Thread Meredith McBurney
Yesterday (5/23) continued the trend of a variety of species led by Yellow
Warbler and Catbirds. We banded a total of 27 new birds:

Willow Flycatcher 1
Dusky Flycatcher 3
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 (FOS)
Gray Catbird 7
Yellow Warbler 7
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 3
Song Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

Today (5/24) the numbers dropped down again to the mid-teens, which was a
disappointment - we had thought perhaps we would be seeing more birds
arriving late. We had our first Warbling Vireo of the season, 2+ weeks
late. The best catch of the day was a male Bullock's Oriole that was
banded in 2015.

Warbling Vireo 1
Gray Catbird 4
Yellow Warbler 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1
Bullock's Oriole 1, banded 2015

We are open six days per week (closed Tuesdays) through May 30, weather
permitting. While some COVID related restrictions remain in place there
are opportunities most mornings for the public to visit, but reservations
are required. Visit https://denveraudubon.org/events/

 for
more information and to sign-up. Because each hour-long session is limited
to 10 people, we anticipate selling out most mornings, so register soon if
you are interested.

[cobirds] Boulder Audubon - This Tuesday - The Natural History Bats

2021-05-24 Thread Sydney Rayl
*Online Meeting - Bringing the Natural History of Boulder County Bats to
Light*

The true nature of bats is often eclipsed by mythology and weakly inferred
links to zoonotic diseases, including COVID-19. After more than 30 years of
research in Boulder County, every year brings new and compelling
information on our magnificent nocturnal friends. At Boulder County
Audubon's final program of the Spring 2021 season, we will discuss this
along with the current research findings on bats in Boulder County
including increasing populations of a recently established species, the
tricolored bat; new findings on bat winter ecology; and how climate warming
is affecting our local populations and their reproductive efforts. We will
also learn more about a newly discovered link between bats and black-tailed
prairie dog colonies in the foothills.

*Join Boulder County Audubon this Tuesday* to delve into the nocturnal and
enigmatic world of bats with Rick Adams. Rick Adams is Professor Emeritus
at the University of Northern Colorado and Founder/President of the
Colorado Bat Society.

*When: This Tuesday, May 25, 7:15 pm. *We encourage you to join early if
possible (the Zoom room will open at 7:00) to ensure there are no
connection issues.

*Where:* This meeting will be held online over Zoom. All participants will
be muted upon entry, but the chat feature will be available so you can type
questions for the speaker. Follow *this link
*on Tuesday, May 25 to
access the Zoom link.

*We hope to see you there!*

[cobirds] New Nunn-area Arrivals/Weld

2021-05-24 Thread 'The Nunn Guy' via Colorado Birds

Hi all

Northern Mockingbird showed in yard this morning singing up a storm.
Western Wood-Pewee yesterday. Blue Grosbeak at local "grassland bird haven"
in and around CR 102/100/41-area. The gravel pit trees at CR 94/37 are
noisy with usual breeding birds--sometimes you can get three oriole species
here :-)

Most non-breeding shorebirds have since moved on for the most part.

Some photos below.

[cobirds] Baltimore oriole AND red-necked grebe, Boulder - Pella Crossing

2021-05-24 Thread Laura Steadman
Hi birders!

The Baltimore oriole previously reported on the west side of Pella Crossing
open space was still present and singing this morning. Also of potential
interest is a breeding plumage red-necked grebe in the pond just north of
the parking lot.

Good birding,
Laura Steadman

[cobirds] Chimney Swifts and Lesser Nighthawk at Totten Reservoir (Montezuma County)

2021-05-24 Thread Eric Hynes
Good Morning CO Birders,

Yesterday evening I was standing on the bluff on the east side of Totten
Reservoir at 1800, just outside Cortez, and was about to leave when a
Chaetura sp. buzzed by me. I almost dropped my scope. This may not seem
like a big deal to CO birders closer to Kansas, but for us who are closer
to Utah, a small, dark swift is terribly exciting.

In short order, I was joined by Erik Hendrickson, then Brenda Wright and
Coen Dexter. We stayed until nearly dark and managed to see this swift a
number of times. We took thousands of photos, some of which had the swift
in it. It was joined by a second Chaetura sp. and at one of the times they
were together, flying directly over us, all four of us heard a few seconds
of rapid, flat tweetering chatter... Chimney Swift! It is a sound I am very
familiar with, having grown up in New England. I played Vaux's Swift off my
phone after hearing the birds and we all agreed, it was not the sharper,
sweeter Pygmy Nuthatchesque squeaks of a Vaux's Swift. PHEW! We were all
greatly relieved to hear it. We had spent a lot of time discussing the
finer points of Chimney versus Vaux's ID based on field marks and found
ourselves about as confident as a person on thin ice (until it/they
called). We called them both Chimney Swift because we could not discern any
difference between them proportionally.

At sunset, we added a very good look at a solo Black Swift and noted the
larger size and the decidedly different structure and flight behavior.

Since we had stayed until sunset, we gave it a few more minutes because
Brenda and Coen had a Lesser Nighthawk at this same spot recently. On cue,
a Lesser Nighthawk started coursing back and forth along the slope below
us. In short order it was joined by a second Lesser Nighthawk and then a
Common Nighthawk, which made for great comparison.

Overall, a fantastic evening and enough excitement to keep me sharp dodging
Elk on my drive back up to Telluride. Brenda shared the eBird checklist
already, which I hope to add to later today. Check it out here:

Best,
Eric
