Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 14:00:00
Total observation time: 6 hours

Official Counter:Steve Small

Observers:Carol Cwiklinski, Natalie Vande Vuss

Visitors:
We had 35 visitors to the top. We were assisted by Julie Spear, Patty and
Keith Bellingham, and Shmuel Korengut. Thanks for your help!

Weather:
The unpleasant strong west wind was back again. Gusty winds increased in
the early afternoon which ended the count at 1400 hrs. The sky was mostly
clear, but we could see storms over the mountains and to the north.

Raptor Observations:
One bird made the day worth our effort. We had a dark morph broad-winged
hawk in the 1100 hour. We had the best possible view, it started below eye
level just west of observation which let us see the pattern on its
backside, then it circled up slowly giving us an excellent view of its
underside, tail, and very dark morph. It was spectacular. Otherwise we had
a steady flight of migrants through the 1100 hour.

Non-raptor Observations:
Says Phoebe, broad-tailed hummingbird

Predictions:
Lighter winds

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome. HawkWatch at
Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM to around
3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading
east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west
side of the ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left,
head through the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the
crest of the ridge. (Distance: 0.56 miles, Elevation gain: 259 feet)

2022-04-17 Thread Dale Pate
Paula Bauer and I observed and photographed the Brown Pelican on the
Douglas County side in the last gravel pond south of Kingfisher Bridge. It
was sleeping on an island with about 35 American White Pelicans, but did
wake up and stretch its wings allowing me to get some photos. Hopefully it
will stick around.

At 10:20 I saw the Brown Pelican high over the Gravel Pit that the scuba
divers train in. It was high and heading south. This was after seeing it
high and heading north east, so it could be heading anywhere if it is not
at Chatfield still.

Re: [cobirds] Birding Challenge

2022-04-17 Thread Charles Hundertmark
Thanks for reaching out with this problem, Susan, and thanks for working with
me on the phone to troubleshoot the issue. It appears that unlike the Colorado
Birding Challenge last year, there is currently not a way to find out which
county a team has picked for birding. I’ll check to see if we can remedy that.

The other problem, arises if you search the list of teams on the Leaderboard
before registering for the challenge, and then register directly on the page
for one of the teams. That automatically registers for the team even though you
may not have been ready to commit to that particular team. It is best to
register before you explore the teams.

Thanks for participating in last year’s challenge and for joining us again this
year.

Conservation Committee

Re: [cobirds] Gilpin County - Franklin's Gulls

2022-04-17 Thread Donna Stumpp
I've had several people ask about access and how I was able to take the
photos. The parking lot on the SW area of the reservoir was open, so we
just went in and parked. We first tried viewing from the west end, and
while we did see a different area of the reservoir, the water was pretty
far away.

If you're looking for more information, the reservoir is also called Chase
Gulch Reservoir. It doesn't appear if you have the map view turned on in
Google Maps, only with the satellite view. Then the parking area is visible
also. About 20% of the lake still had ice on it. And if you like to fish
also, note that fishing is only permitted for Central City and Gilpin
County residents. I heard the sheriff lives up the hill and keeps a close
eye on it.

Today was our Rapthorton! We owe a huge thanks to everyone who came out for
both the raptorthon and for the normal count today- Carol Cwiklinski, Steve
Small, Janet Peters, Natalie Vande Vuss, Joey Kellner, Robin Sher, Seth

Clouds were present all throughout the day to varying degrees. Winds stayed
calm for most of the day coming from the NE. The sun was out every once in
a while, warming the ridge up. A thick haze settled into the distance early
in the day, decreasing visibility.

Raptor Observations:
Our best day yet this season happened to fall on our Raptorthon, how great!
254 migrants, FOY SW and BW were seen today. We got great looks at both

incredible day for migration and for those of us who got to witness.
