[cobirds] Odd bird with features of both a cormorant and a booby

2022-11-16 Thread Nicholas Komar
This is the strangest post I’ve ever made on Cobirds. On Monday, Nov 14, 2022,
at dusk I visited Fossil Creek Reservoir in Larimer County. While perusing a
dense flock of cormorants perched across the lake through my telescope I
noticed one with a large pale bill. See the enlarged/cropped photo inserted
here. More photos are available on my eBird checklist here:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S122445043. This odd bird appeared to be a larger
cormorant with a larger thicker bill, and I also noticed a blue tinge to the
bill and feet. The bill shape reminded me of a Booby. This was one strange
bird! Unfortunately it disappeared in the dense flock as the sun went down and
hasn’t been seen since. Please check your local cormorant flock and report back
if you find it. If it is indeed a hybrid the question will then be what species
are the parents. Needless to say, this bird is super interesting and needs
better documentation. Note that most scientists consider interbreeding between
a cormorant and a Booby to be impossible.

Re: [cobirds] Hattie Lake 11/16

2022-11-16 Thread Mark Miller
Hi Everyone,

I just now (3pm) saw the eiders from the fishing access at the east end of
the lake, in with goldeneyes. A local named Brad was a big help.

[cobirds] Hattie Lake 11/16

2022-11-16 Thread Mark Miller
Hi Everyone,

I'm at Hattie Lake now (12:50pm), and haven't run into the eiders yet. I'm
standing at the spit in the middle looking north to the edge of the ice and
the north shore.Temps are in the 30s and the wind has calmed down, so
birding isn't too uncomfortable. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold and snowy.

[cobirds] Aiken Audubon program on Birds of the Western National Monuments TONIGHT

2022-11-16 Thread linda hodges
Tonight, November 16th at 7:00 pm, Aiken Audubon offers a presentation on
western National Monuments by Mike Endres. Please join us in person or via
zoom!

Mike is the author of the Colorado Mountain Club *Guide to Western National
Monuments*
,

and spent roughly 5 years researching the monuments for this guide,
visiting most of them two or three times. The signed guide book will be on
sale after the presentation for a discounted price of $20.

The Antiquities Act of 1906 has been instrumental in the conservation and
preservation of critical lands across our nation. The ease with which it
can be used by a sitting President is demonstrated by the fact that all but
two Presidents have proclaimed at least one National Monument during their
time in office. Many of our current National Parks were first a National
Monument. These lands are often just as breathtaking as the Parks but
typically more isolated and with far fewer visitors. In short, an
overlander's dream. Join Mike as he details the unlimited opportunities
these lands offer.

This will be an in-person meeting held at the Colorado Parks & Wildlife
Office located at 4255 Sinton Rd. Colorado Springs, CO 80907.

Participants will also be able to join via Zoom.
