Total observation time: 7.5 hours

Observers:

Visitors:
Three visitors stopped by the site today including a runner who chatted for
a few minutes. The trail was very muddy all day, but the recently dug
drainages by Jefferson County seem to have helped the trail. There was a
large puddle right at the top of the trail up, just south of the count
site, that may linger for a day or two.

Weather:
The storm that moved through our area over the last two days was just
clearing out as I got to the watch. Cloud covered stayed heavy all day and
there was rain for 5-75 minute periods throughout the day. Winds were from
the NE all day and the sun showed itself for a maximum of 15 minutes.

Raptor Observations:
Migration was slower than we had hoped after this storm with a total of 6
migrants. The highlight was a low immature SW at the end of the day, my
first immature SW of the season. Local raptor activity was low today with 3
RT seen once and the first of 4 local TV not seen until the 1300 hour.

Non-raptor Observations:
Passerine activity was low today with BGGN, SPTO, DOWO, BBMA, CORA, ROPI,
BUSH, and WEKI all seen/heard once or twice.

Predictions:
We should finally have our first rain-free day in four days tomorrow. Cloud
cover will be persistent and the trail will likely still be muddy on the
way up. Tomorrow may be our last full day counting this season as there is
more rain predicted for Sunday, but we are hopeful to get through the
weekend.

[cobirds] Boulder Grays

2023-05-12 Thread Peter Burke
Hi COBirders,
Once the clouds lifted around midday, I went out to the CU East Campus
area, from the confluence ponds to the scoreboard. There were
two Black-throated Gray Warblers feeding primarily in Boxelder along the
bikebath just north of the ponds -- a male and a female.

In the burned out scrub adjacent to the northern pond, there was at least
one Gray Flycatcher along with Green-tailed Towhees, a Marsh Wren, a
Virginia Warbler, both Myrtle and Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warblers and
many, many Yellow Warblers.

Photos of the Black-throated Grays can be found here:

Good birding!

[cobirds] Nashville Warbler, CSR, El Paso CO, Friday

2023-05-12 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

I, too, was washed out yesterday, and worked through wind today, but North
winds are not as much of a problem for me banding at Clear Spring Ranch.

138 birds netted today - 86 of which were from the ubiquitous Chipping Sparrow
flocks. (a sample of 11 were banded)

others:
FOS Black-headed Grosbeak (f)
FOS Nashville Warbler (SY male) - only the third I’ve banded at CSR, first in
the spring
Lark Sparrow 13
Clay-colored Sparrow 16
Hermit Thrush
Green-tailed Towhee 2
Yellow-breasted Chat (Ad F)
American Robin
Lincoln’s Sparrow 2
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow (SY)
Orange-crowned Warbler (SY M)
Com Yellowthroat (SY M)
Yellow Warbler 5 (SYM2, AD F 2, AD M)
MacGillivray’s Warbler (AD M)
and several Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed Cowbirds netted but not
banded

I still haven’t banded any tanagers or orioles, although there was singing
Bullock’s out there somewhere this morning

Happy Migration,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Banding Station-May 12, 2023

2023-05-12 Thread Chicobander
Yesterday was a Wash for banding with the rain/thunderstorms and wind.
Today, however very windy, had the birds down low which may have helped us
capture more birds in the nets. Twenty-five bird species banded including
these new species of the season: Blackpoll Warbler, Willow Flycatcher,
Western Wood-pewee, Warbling Vireo, and Plumbeous Vireo.
Swainson's Thrushes were popular around the banding station.

*109 New Birds*
Wilson's Warbler- 3
Yellow Warbler- 8
Orange-crowned Warbler- 1
MacGillivray's Warbler- 3
Northern Waterthrush- 3
Ovenbird- 2
Blackpoll Warbler- 1
Common Yellowthroat- 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's subspecies)- 8
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle)- 3
Yellow-rumped Warbler intergrade- 3 (Myrtle/Audubon's)
House Wren- 1
Warbling Vireo- 1
Plumbeous Vireo- 1
Western Wood-pewee-1
Dusky Flycatcher-1
Willow Flycatcher- 1
Least Flycatcher- 2
Brown-headed Cowbird- 1
Chipping Sparrow- 1
Green-tailed Towhee- 1
Lincoln's Sparrow- 4
Lazuli Bunting- 2
American Goldfinch- 9
Swainson's Thrush- 42
Yellow-breasted Chat- 2
Gray Catbird- 3

*4 Recaptures*
Lincoln's Sparrow- 1
Common Yellowthroat -2
Northern Waterthrush - 1

* The Bullock's Oriole returning bird we captured on Wednesday was banded
in 2021 as a Second-year bird (4 year old bird this year).

The Lincoln's Sparrow recaptured today was caught twice- It gained 1.7
grams in 1.5 hours. Pretty good increase in mass for a bird. Plenty of
moths and insects low to the ground due to the wind.

The banding station will be open tomorrow sunrise to @11 am and Closed on
Sunday.
Enjoy the day!

[cobirds] Summer tanager

2023-05-12 Thread jandcru...@gmail.com
The young male Summer tanager is back sitting low in the serviceberry bush
in front of our house at 2268 Indian Peaks Circle in south Longmont. Best
viewing would be using your car as a blind by parking on the street in
front of our house.

The serviceberry does not yet have leaves so there is no need to approach
it.

[cobirds] Summer tanager

2023-05-12 Thread jandcru...@gmail.com
Just had a male Summer tanager in my yard in south Longmont. It had the
characteristic red, orange and yellowish feathering of a young male. It was
feeding in a serviceberry bush, in an Austrian pine and on the ground.

It flew off to the north. If birders want to look for it we live on Indian
Peaks Circle which is just off Plateau Road near Sunset.

I got some just terrible photos which I will post on eBird.

[cobirds]

2023-05-12 Thread Paula Hansley
I woke up at 6 am to a Black-headed Grosbeak singing from a neighbor’s
roof— he was so loud that I could hear him with my doors and windows
closed.

Sparrows: Lincoln’s Sparrow eating on my patio next to a White-crowned
Sparrow. A Chipping Sparrow is feeding under a bush next to a fir tree
where another White-crowned is belting out his song!

[cobirds] Kentucky warbler, Fort Collins, Larimer

2023-05-12 Thread Jay Breidt
Yesterday morning I found a Kentucky warbler at Prospect Ponds. The bird
continues this morning, relocated by Lauren Hatch at the same location.
>From the south parking lot, head along the bike path toward the
Environmental Learning Center, crossing a small bridge and arriving at a
stone bench on the right side of the trail. The bird has been skulking
along the ground on both sides of the trail.
