[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes

2023-10-06 Thread Diane Roberts
I camped at Jumbo Reservoir, Logan County. Super smooth lake, lovely night.
Loved hearing, in the dark, Canada Geese, Great Horned Owls & staggered groups
of Sandhill Cranes.

[cobirds] Insect question

I observed the Bay-breasted Warbler at beautiful Rock Ledge Ranch in El Paso

Dave Leatherman may know what insect this warbler was picking off an Elm tree.
Curious.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe County

2023-04-28 Thread Diane Roberts
Hello All,

I wanted to share a couple of my recent observations. CCSP one of the few
bodies of water with low water lately. There is alot exposed shoreline &
mud. I did sink up to my knee boots in the mud so be prepared.

The Pelican Point hotspot has been closed due to nesting species in the
small forest. The Park Rangers are watching supporting this with possible
ticket.

The waterfowl, gulls, ibis, terns (not many) & Pelicans have had the area
to themselves. My observation seemed as tho these species were less
threatened and more relaxed while feeding. In the end, for the moment in
time that the area is closed, nature & birds are better off for it. Birders
are being patient inspire of incoming migrants.

2021-07-23 Thread Diane Roberts
Hello,

I wanted to share a conversation I had with a super nice lady who lives at
the house south of Highway 285 in Jefferson, Co. Many of you know the
“feeder” house for Rosy-Finches. She was telling me she use to get
“thousands” of Rosy-Finches at her feeders. While we didn’t talk about
current numbers, from my experience, substantially lower.
She, also, commented on many fewer hummingbirds these last 2 years.

Side note: The cafe in Jefferson has tasty food made on the grill and made
to order burritos. Super friendly ladies working there.

Good birding y’all!

Re: [cobirds] Chatfield Horse Stables Off Limits

2021-01-18 Thread Diane Roberts
Hello,

A couple thoughts in response to Cinnamon’s inquiry.

The stable leases the property from CPW so they have the right to monitor
access. It is a business and birders are scattered around like horseflies
when there is a bird around, possibly disruptive to the business.
Additionally, there is inherent liability with horses and horseback riding
so the owner does not want to incur any additional issues or liability.

This should be birders respecting no means no. It is simple really.

Hello,

I don’t know if there is any assistance or curb suffering as this Pelican
seems low on weight & only able to fly short distances. Photo demonstrates
only black underwing.

The other Pelican has an injured leg/foot but gets can fly around far
better.

For what it’s worth.

[cobirds] Carolina Wren

2020-01-23 Thread Diane Roberts
I was looking for this bird off of Vine in Centennial in an easement area. I
was approached by very friendly homeowners who said they wondered what all the
big camera & Binos were doing behind their house, as they worried about crime.
I showed them a picture of the bird to smooth things over and spoke about it.

Homeowners said the easement is private property, even tho there was nothing
posted. They said the fella with the gate at the end of the easement owns the
space. I told them I would spread the word & sorry to disturb.

[cobirds] Yellow-billed Loon

2018-02-28 Thread Diane Roberts
Monday 2/26 I spotted the Yellow-billed Loon on the Douglas County side of
Chatfield Reservoir. Most likely the South Platte Park Reservoir Loon.
Chatfield was frozen, at that time, on all but the viewing from the marina spit
and marina area. Diane Roberts, Lone Tree, CO
