[cobirds] Re: Canada and Black-throated Gray Warblers - Roxborough
> > For those wanting a bit more information for the Canada Warbler: > The easiest way to get to this area would be to get on Rampart Range Rd and head south, as if you were heading to Roxborough State Park. There will be a parking lot on the West (left) side of the road in which you can get to with no access issues. If you see the Intermediate school on the East (right) side of the road, you have gone too far. Coords: 39.472435, -105.073662 The warbler was seen in the vicinity of these coords: 39.470713, -105.076160 This is a small east-west sidewalk, slightly north of the pond which is directly west of the skate park. It flew north of this area shortly after letting me admire it. [cobirds] Canada and Black-throated Gray Warblers - Roxborough
All, I was walking in the greenspace near my home this morning, and came across a few good rarities. The first was a Canada Warbler actively feeding in deciduous trees near a stream, where a convenient path crosses the way. This area is to the west of the Roxborough Skate Park. The second was a Black-throated Gray Warbler actively feeding in a grove of trees behind my home. This is where a long sidewalk cuts east-west across the greenspace to join the two sidewalks together (this is north of the Canada Warbler area). Good luck! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] White-winged Crossbill
I was up on Guanella Pass yesterday to look at the ptarmigan. Thank you to Mark Amershek for great directions. The exciting part: As I was coming back down, I saw a small flock of birds land high up in a tree. I thought to myself, hooray, rosy-finches! When I was able to get one in my view, I about dropped my snowshoe poles as it was a blatantly obvious, and very beautiful, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL. I barely had time to thoroughly admire it before the flock saw me and vacated the tree. I watched as they flew to the north, then turned west and eventually out of sight behind some other tall trees in the area. I observed two males flying in the flock of ten Red Crossbills. The location is the very last hairpin turn before the last straight-way to the summit parking lots. It is before you come to the big Guanella Pass sign. Please note that when I was there, the road was closed two miles from the summit. I cannot imagine the weekend snowstorm has made it any better. Snowshoes were not required to hike the road, but again, may have changed since Friday. You will need snowshoes if you want to look for ptarmigan. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Flagler SWA
Got a late start to Flagler this morning, but it may have made the day for me. Everything I found was in the tree area south-southeast of the boat ramp on the west side. Managed to find a yellow-bellied sapsucker in the midst of all the yellow-shafted and red-shafted flickers. A winter wren was still present, no idea if it was the same one as last week. A blue-headed vireo was around, though for a slow gleaner it was sure moving. A Tennessee warbler was moving through in the same area as the vireo. A very surprising hatch year female mourning warbler came to observe me as I was pishing at the Tennessee warbler. Two Harris's sparrows were chirping in a tree and evading all the other birds in the area. The wood thrush from Tuesday (?) was still around, and as expected, did not like to be seen very easily. Two northern bobwhites were calling to each other but not willing to come into view. Lastly, three young turkeys had no idea what to do when they sensed me in the area, and proceeded to walk one direction, change their mind and go another, change their mind again, but finally walked out of sight. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Little Blue Heron
I checked early this morning for the Little Blue Heron, no luck. After birding with Gary Lefko, I hit the gravel pits on my way back home. As I pulled up on the SW corner of the pond at CR 24 1/2 and 9 3/4 (around 13:30), I saw 4 small, all white birds fly from the SE corner. As I got my binoculars on them, I immediately recognized a juvenile Little Blue Heron, with 3 Snowy Egrets chasing it. The heron had dusky wing tips that were difficult to see as it flew, as well as yellow legs. The 3 egrets had all white wings, black legs and yellow feet. They all flew generally east, presumably to the pond behind the subdivision. After scoping the rest of the pond and the one across the road, and talking to a birder whose name I cannot recall, I drove around to the subdivision and tried to look at the pond. There was no direct access anywhere, and not wanting to draw the ire of the locals for parking and going to their playground, I gave up trying to search for the heron and egrets. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
