[cobirds] Two SC birders in Colorado last week
Colorado birders, Col. Richard Hayes (USAF, Ret.) and I had a great week in Colorado June 17-22. I got 11 of my targets, all ABA lifers, and Richard got 41! He's an Air Force Academy grad and lived in Colorado Springs after retirement, but has only recently taken up birding. Richard is quick to get on a bird and spot good habitat. On the road to Douglas Pass he found a little wet spot. Soon after we arrived we were harrassed by William's Sapsucker and a pair of Western Tanagers with dependent young. A bit further up the road he found a Dusky Grouse pair in a little opening that also produced my life Dusky Flycatcher! others: 1. McCown's and Chestnut-collared Longspurs at Pawnee 2. White-tailed Patarm. amd Brown-capped RF at RMNP 3. Juniper Titmouse Linwood Cemetary (Glenwood Springs) 4. Gray Vireo and Sage Thrasher BLM trail near Rifle 5. Sage Sparrow near Utah border just NW of Mack Missed Chuckar despite three trips to Cameo and checking CO13 and other habitats in the west. Again, dry conditions? Photographed Burrowing Owl near Mack and at Pawnee. Heard, but did not see, Flamm, Western Screech, and probable Long-eared at Douglas Pass. Heard a Boreal Owl alarm whiney in response to my whistled hooting at Grand Mesa Visitor's Center. We've NO filed expereince with these four, save my hearing Flammulated before in SE AZ in Ponderosa Pine. All four owls were cheked against Richard's birdsound ap and were in the right habitat, so I submit this as possible observations. After the stary sky at midnight at Grand Mesa, in a moonlesss sky, surpassed anything either of us had ever seen. Thanks to all the Colorado birders who responded to our RFI: Scott Roederer, Scott Rashid, Larry Arnold, Edward Lurkouich, Nathan Pieplow, Maggie Boswell, and Robert Spencer. We couldn't have done it without you. Guess I'll have to wait to visit my wife's kin in Utah to get that Chukar. They live in Ferron, about 2 hours north of Capitol Reef NP. Thanks again and don't hestitate to ask for help if you need to come here to get that Painted Bunting or Bachman's Sparrow one day. RE: [cobirds] Re: Black-chinned Sparrows - more begging
Colorado birders, We are two South Carolina birders planning to be in the Grand Junction area June 20-22. Black-chinned Sparrow would be a lifer for us. Please give us more specifics on where the sparrows are located in No Thoroughfare Canyon, if appropriate. We promise to be 100% ABA ethics birders while in your beautiful state. Also, are Chukars still being seen in Coal Canyon beyond the power plant in Cameo? Thanks, Steve Compton Greenville,SC On Mon, Jun 4, 2012 at 1:32 PM, Dick Filby wrote: Ah, yes, oops.. [cobirds] Two South Carolina birders RFI for June 16-23 Colorado trip
Colorado birders, Richard Hayes and I plan to do Jerry Cooper's Summer in Colorado week starting June 16. Many of you may be familiar with Cooper's Birdfinder book, published in 1995 by the ABA. We also have A Birder's guide to Colorado (1997) by Holt. Both of these are excellent but have not been recently revised. Our itinerary: Day 1- Pawnee Grasslands and Rocky Mt. NP Day 2- RMNP Day 3- RMNP and Golden Gate Canyon park Day 4- Hanging Lake (maybe not-I have a brokken ankle), Cameo, Colorado NM Day 5- Colorado NM, Grand Junction area Day 6 -Extra day Targets: Day 1- McCown's Chestnut-collard Longspurs. Lark Bunting, Mountain Plover Day 2- White-tailed Ptarmigan, Brown-capped Rosy-finch. probably can't hike to the Black Swift site (alas) Day 3-Dusky Flycatcher Day 4 5- Chukar, Sage Thrasher, Sage Sparrow, Juniper Titmouse, Gray Vireo, longshot at Sage Grouse Extra-whatever we miss. Might go up Mt. Evans for high-altitude stuff. Long shot possibles: Boreal and Flammulated Owls (yeah, I know they're really hard). Richard is an Air Force Academy grad and lived in Colorado Springs after retirement from the Air Force, but he only recently started birding. He's good, though. I've been at this since 1979 but haven't birded out west extensively. I've birded Mt. Evans and RMNP once for few days in September. Any tips/updates greatly appreciated, and we'd love to have company if you're free. We'll have a rental car.
