[cobirds] Fall Count
Our 44th annual Fall Count recorded 10,823 birds of 162 species. Count of individuals lower than average, species count up 7 from average. We had 3 new species: Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Common Tern, and Dickcissel. Say's Phoebes have increased over the years, with the 66 seen last weekend far more than any previous year. 17 Solitary Sandpipers, highes count by one. 506 Western Grebes, which seems to have increased over the years. Only one Franklin's Gull, lowest count except two years when we didn't record any. Half the duck species dropped from average: Ruddy, Com. Merganser, Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Wigeon, even Canada Goose. Redheads show a drastic drop, which started in 2013: 11 this year, average 96. But 207 Shovelers, third highest in 43 years, topped the average of 94. Hugh -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. We completely struck out on one group: we saw NO blackbirds, grackles, or cowbirds. None at all. In that family, only a dozen meadowlarks. Notable species included 3 Common Poorwills, 1 Merlin, 1 Townsend's Solitaire, 2 Brown Thrashers, a Nashville Warbler, a Black-headed Grosbeak, and 3 Blue Grosbeaks. eBird thought 1 Violet-green Swallow deserved documentation, as well as with a couple Cordilleran Flycatchers and 40 Brewer's Sparrows. [cobirds] Fall Count - Audubon Nature Center
The Fall Count at the Audubon Nature Center/Chatfield trails (Sept. 12) picked up a respectable 56 species, and the "Drive around" from Waterton Bridge to Roxborough Park road, past the entrance to Roxborough State Park, counted 22 species, 6 of them additional to the nature center species. The Nature Center specialized in unusual flycatchers: 2 Eastern Phoebes at the Water Board pond and a Gray Flycatcher on the road between the Gazebo & the parking lot. We counted 3 Black-chinned hummingbirds. In contrast to Joey Kellner's Chatfield tally, we had 2 each Plumbeous & Warbling Vireos and 4 Western Tanagers. [cobirds] Fall Count - Rocky Mtn Arsenal NWR
We enjoyed a fruitful Fall Count at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge yesterday (9/13). We counted 100 species, second highest of the 30 or so counts (we had 101 in 2008). Most striking: a flood of Sage Thrashers -- they occupied most open areas on the refuge, in twos to tens. We counted 52 of them! eBird started objecting when we reached 20. Other notables: 36 Red-tailed Hawks; 1 White-faced Ibis, 1 Great Crested Flycatcher, and one out-of-place Williamson's Sapsucker. Compared to Chatfield & Audubon/Chatfield, we had 1 each Warbling & Red-eyed Vireo, 2 Yellow-breasted Chats, and 9 Common Yellowthroats. Not many sparrows although the list has 133 Vespers and 53 Chipping; 5 species. [cobirds] Fall Count, Waterton
The Waterton portion of the Denver Fall Count yesterday had a typical suite of species. We tallied 786 individuals of 61 species -- last year, 60 species, 553 birds. Highlights: A family of Blue Grosbeaks fed near the Gazebo. An Eastern Phoebe hid in underbrush on Roxborough Park Road (maybe a refugee from the nesting pairs at Chatfield. The most amazing, near the Audubon Nature Center: a bear cub (yearling, not cute and cuddly) thatscrambled 15 feet up a cottonwood tree. Also seen last Sunday on the DenverAudubon Walk the Wetlands trip. Totally fresh bear droppings, loaded with chunksof apple, near the Water Board fishing pond, and another on the threshold tothe Nature Center. We also went with Kirk Huffstater on the Castlewood Canyon count today. Our highlights involved predators: a coyote that hassled a flock of 10 Wild Turkeys (both species about the same size) and a Merlin that flashed by after a flock of Vesper Sparrows (with unknown results). [cobirds] Fall Count -- Castlewood Canyon SP
Yes, it’s that time of year again! Already! Please come out to join the ASGD/DFO annual Fall Count at Castlewood Canyon State Park. We’ll be starting at 6:30am at the Old Farmhouse parking lot, which is just inside the north park entrance off Hwy-86 (just west of Franktown). We’ll be birding all morning, and well into the afternoon, so dress appropriately and bring plenty to drink and eat. There have been many interesting birds in the count area recently, including Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Sage Thrashers, Dickcissel, Bobolink, Loggerhead Shrike, both Bluebirds, both Kingbirds, all 3 Nuthatches (4 if you count Creepers), misc. empids, many Sparrows (Vesper, Lark, Song, Chipping, Clay-colored, Savannah, etc.), increasing numbers of Warblers, and many others! And we even had a Red-headed Woodpecker on the 2011 Fall Count! I hope to see you out there! If you have any questions, feel free to email or call me. Fall Count Cherry Creek SP Friday: Of interest: Juvenile Long-tailed Jaeger was found picking on the shore in the cove north of the Swim Beach. Nice mixture of Sanderling, four Pectoral, several Least and two Baird's Sandpipers on the Southeast corner spit. Four Red-necked Phalaropes pretty far out from the Swim Beach. Thanks Glenn Walbek.
