[cobirds] Gyrfalcon at John Martin?

2021-12-31 Thread mrse...@gmail.com
I had a friend send me a picture from a Hawk ID group, clearly a juvenile
Gyrfalcon and said to be at John Martin Reservoir yesterday. Has anyone
else seen this bird?

Re: [cobirds] Gyrfalcon Larimer

2021-02-11 Thread Andrew Monson
Hey Sean and Derek,

Sorry for the late reply but I've only recently joined the COBirds group!
I'm starting to doubt my light-morph Prairie Falcon ID on Horsetooth Rock
itself one week ago (Thursday, February 4th) now that I've seen all of the
Gyrfalcon reports. My brain hadn't thought to consider it, but the
location and size would check out for the Gyrfalcon. The bird in question
was perched in a way that I thought might be a nesting site, but it was
also puffed up and appeared to be the size of a large snowman head (same
color as snow, so a very light morph, with some flecks on the breast),
which leads me to believe it was bigger than a Prairie Falcon. I had a
visual on its head and could see the "tears" on its face, but unfortunately
didn't have my camera on me.

I'm still working on getting better at IDs but figured I'd throw my two
cents in just in case it helps anyone, even if a week late.

Best,
Andrew Monson

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon Larimer

2021-02-05 Thread Derek Hill
COBirders,
Has anyone seen the Larimer County Gyrfalcon lately? Last update I see is
from the day after Christmas so I thought I'd share. This afternoon 5 Feb
2:45pm at a job site in SW Ft. Collins at the northeast corner of W. Drake
Rd & Overland was quite the bird. This is just below the S end of
Horsetooth Reservoir. At first glance coming head-on I took it to be just a
Red-tailed Hawk doing their rowing flight they often do to power on through
at low altitude. As it very quickly passed overhead the wingshape and
cadence quickly made it obvious this was no Buteo! The absolute thickest
bodied, most massive falcon I've ever seen. It was so fast I didn't get
much of a study, but enough. No black armpits, pretty unremarkable pattern,
but the massive body and wide wings were astounding. The only other Gyr
I've seen was the Texas bird several years back, which never left its perch
during our observation. So, the first time seeing a Gyr in flight is
something else.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon on Trilby Road s of Larimer Landfill on 2/18/2020 (Larimer)

2020-02-18 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Peter Burke and I saw the gyrfalcon this morning on the big poles w of Taft on
Trilby about 10am. After maybe 20 minutes, the bird flew off in pursuit of
something toward the sw corner of the landfill and appeared to land on the
ground but we lost sight of it. About an hour later another big falcon landed
on a pole east of the one the gyr had been on. Eventually the second bird
moved one pole to the west and perched on the same pole the gyr had chosen
earlier (I am guessing the 5th big pole w of Taft). The second bird proved to
be a prairie falcon. Interestingly, we actually saw the prairie fly n to
pursue a common raven that was heading s out of the landfill with a big
mouthful of something distinctly yellow. What could the prize have been? The
falcon tried to shake down the raven but we did not see anything drop. This
episode was very reminiscent of what jaegers do with gulls.

Gauging the size of birds is tough on those big poles. Obviously, if the
choice is between gyr and prairie and one sees the underwing pattern, an ID is
rather simple. Back in the comfort of 70-degree computer chairs, Peter and I
went to school on our photos and would now suggest the following:

Both gyr and prairie are big gray falcons.

Both have dark malars, with a typical prairie falcon having a darker and
narrower malar than this gyr.

Both have bright white throats.

Both have pale areas on the side of the face behind the malar. On the prairie,
this area matches the throat in whiteness. On the gyr it is bigger and grayer
than the throat, not nearly as contrasting.

The prairie has a small white patch immediately behind the eye, the gyr does
not.

The supercilium of the prairie shows some bright white, the gyr's is pale but
not bright white.

Cere of prairie seems brighter yellow than the pale yellow-green of gyr.

As anyone who has seen this gyr knows, if it is on a pole, it may not, probably
won't, stay put for long. As soon as getting on a big gray falcon, check the
head. If it has bright white anywhere other than the throat, it is likely a
prairie.

We are trying to be helpful here and in no way quibble with anyone who has
wrestled with an ID of the falcons in this situation. The guides do not say
enough of help with this difficult ID challenge. One would think, myself
included, there would be little confusion between birds 6 inches different in
length and with one being twice the weight of the other. Not true at the
distances involved, being puffed up in cold weather, having full crops/bellies
and being under the optical illusion those monster poles seem to generate. See
my poor photos attached that, nevertheless, mirror the views one gets in terms
of distance and lighting. Left bird is gyr, right is prairie.

[cid:badbcb4b-1c51-4ff6-aad9-07229b387a0d]

And thank you to Andy Bankert and Robert Beauchamp for first finding the
gyrfalcon last winter and this winter, respectively.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon continues in Larimer County

2020-02-07 Thread Carl Bendorf
While traveling to and from Fort Collins today (from Longmont), I had
occasion to stop by to check for the Gyrfalcon that had been seen on and
off in Larimer County. The bird was present as I arrived at both 11:15 on
my way north and again at 3:45 on my way back home. Both times, it was
perched on the tallest metal powerline poles that line Trilby Avenue to the
west of Taft Hill Rd. Trilby Ave is about 0.7 miles south of the Larimer
County Landfill. For the morning sighting, the falcon took off toward the
landfill about two minutes after we arrived; in the afternoon, the bird
never left its perch on the power pole during our ten minute stay.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon seen this morning, Larimer

2019-12-12 Thread Joe Kipper
Gyrfalcon seen this morning from Trilby Rd. west of Taft Hill in south Fort
Collins by myself and two others. It began attacking gulls at 8:25, but did
not have any success in securing a meal. It then landed in a lone tree
north of Trilby Rd, where it was harassed by Magpies and Ravens for several
minutes. After that, the falcon perched on one of the tall power poles
along Trilby Rd west of Taft Hill. The Gyrfalcon perched alongside Trilby
Rd until 8:47, when it flew right past me, circled a couple of times, and
proceeded to disappear to the northwest. Some of my fuzzy photos are here:

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon - Larimer County

2019-12-09 Thread David A. Steingraeber
The Gyrfalcon was present this morning along Trilby Rd., west of Taft Hill.
When I arrived at 10:40, it was perched atop an insulator on the crossbar of
one of the shorter (wooden) powerpoles, directly north of the larger steel
tower #13 and about 30 m off the road. About 5 min. later, a magpie dove at
the falcon and perched on the same crossbar, ~ 10 ft. from the falcon. The
magpie was agitated and repeatedly bobbed its tail, and after 1-2 minutes, took
off to the south, chased by the falcon. The falcon then flew to the west and
back north over the road, continuing low over the ground as it coursed north.
It landed in a tree to the NW of where I was observing, about 1/4 mi. away.
Over the next 5 min., it was joined in the tree by 4 magpies and 2 ravens,
which continually mobbed and harassed the falcon. The falcon took off and
headed south, and the ravens and magpies took to the air. The falcon wheeled
back to the north and climbed above the flying ravens, which it proceeded to
pursue. Twice, it dove and attacked a raven, but without success. It then
returned to the tree, and after perching there for 1-2 min., flew low to the
ground to the north, and perched atop a fencepost about 1/4 mile north of the
tree. Over the next few minutes it attracted 3 magpies, which perched on the
fence nearby and continued their harassment. When I departed at 11:00 AM, the
falcon was still perched on the fencepost.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon, Larimer County

2019-11-05 Thread marimammoser
At 9:30 this morning, the Gyrfalcon was again on top of one of the metal
power poles just west of Taft Hill Road. It stayed there long enough for me
to get my scope out and on the bird. I watched it for 3-4 minutes, calling
Dave Leatherman in the meantime. At 9:35 it flew southeast across Taft Hill
Road and interacted with another falcon, possibly the Prairie Falcon. It
dove and twisted and turned with the other bird until the other one left. I
then lost it. Dave showed up at 9: 45 or so. We watched for another 20
minutes or so and I then noticed it had returned to the top of the 4th
metal pole from the west end of the straight line of poles. We raced along
Trilby to get close and were able to stop and both get our scopes on the
bird. Dave also was able to get his camera out and took several pictures.
The Falcon then took off circling and soaring towards the dump and we then
lost it. 5 minutes later all of the gulls (approximately 1000) at the dump
got up, so we think it chased or harassed them.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon not seen as of early afternoon, Fort Collins (Larimer) on 1Feb2019

2019-02-01 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Scott Baily, yesterday's refinder of the gyr initially found at the landfill by
Andy Bankert, and I went out to Reservoir Ridge Natural Area on the west side
of Fort Collins between 9 and 11am this morning. In some sort of dirty trick,
sitting on a pole only two away from where the gyr was yesterday afternoon, was
a Prairie Falcon. After eliminating Red-tailed Hawk and under the influence
of long distance and "want", both of us talked ourselves into the initial
belief the Prairie Falcon was the gyr. So did two other birders who viewed the
bird independently. Eventually we all came to our senses. I put together this
comparison graphic for the sake of anyone else who might be going out there as
an aid to unnecessary heart rate increases, or worse, misidentifications/posts,
etc. Prairie Falcons are a full 6 inches shorter than a Gyrfalcon, but a lone
bird can be tough to gauge. Other differences are contained in the Power Point
frame below.

Dave Leatherman
Fort Collins

PS - the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, with some difficulty, was seen at Grandview
Cemetery today by Carl, John and Mark (all from Longmont), Dave Farmer from FC,
and me. In the southwestern corner of the cemetery, the double-trunked pine
EAST of the light pole east of the golf course portapotty is its favorite hang
(60-70% of way up the trunk), with the big cottonwood east of the pine being
its default retreat (as are probably other places we don't know about).

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon still present in Fort Collins (Larimer) on 31Jan2019

2019-01-31 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
I got an email message today from Scott Baily today who lives on the west side
of Fort Collins that contained a beautiful photo of a Gyrfalcon. It almost
assuredly is the same individual found late last year by Andy Bankert at the
Larimer County Landfill. The location of Scott's photo is Reservoir Ridge
Natural Area, which is roughly 7 miles nnw of the landfill along the foothills.
The pole in the picture is part of a powerline that crosses the foot trail
that leads west from the RRNA parking lot on Overland Trail. This parking lot
is on the west side of Overland Trail about a mile north of West Vine Drive. I
would estimate the distance from the parking lot to the powerline at about a
mile. The walking is flat. Although I don't normally go that far west when I
am visiting to see/photograph the bobolinks that nest in this area in summer,
Scott tells me the powerline is just east of where the two trails come together
near the metal foot bridge over the irrigation ditch. If you go west from the
parking lot, just key on the tall n-s powerline. It is the only one straight
west of the parking lot. Scott first saw the bird at 2:30pm, went home got his
camera and it was still there at 3:30. Nice refind, Scott!

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon Larimer County

2018-12-27 Thread Andrew Bankert
The Gyrfalcon came through the landfill around 10:15 this morning and then
sat on one of the large power poles on Trilby Road for a while before
flying off to the west to chase some Rock Pigeons and then flying northeast
and out of sight over Cathy Fromme Prairie. The Glaucous and Nelson's
Gulls were at the landfill this morning before the Gyr came through, and I
photographed a white-winged gull that is probably a Thayer's Gull that
appeared to have a solid white wing in flight (photos show some dark on the
primaries) that made me hopeful for Glaucous-winged Gull. We later saw the
Glacuous and Nelson's Gulls at Warren Lake.

Good Birding,

The falcon was seen by Ed Secor and me at about 330 from the gate of the Ft

then saw him come down to the landfill and eat his prey with magpies and ravens

The gate to the landfill is on Taft Hill Road just north of Trilby.

COBirders,
I wanted a flight shot of the Gyr for Christmas and this morning, David Ely
and I, along with several others were fortunate to get good looks, and then
watch as the bird pursued a Rock Pigeon, showing off some amazing
high-speed aerobatics. (Both in fact, as I think the Pigeon survived
multiple attacks.)

Anyway, I got my Xmas gift, you can see here .

Happy holidays everyone!

First seen near west end of Trilby road, perched on pole, just after 10AM. Flew
briefly to pole just west of intersection of Trilby and Taft Hill, then flew
north where it was seen stooping near the two buildings north of there. Not

At 3:15 the Gyrfalcon flew from its perch on the post east of Taft hill rd and
just south of the landfill (about 12 utility poles) after having spent many
hours there. It circled around the low spot of the fields in the area,
appeared to catch some prey and then disappeared amongst the tall grasses in
that spot. I don’t believe it flew out of that area. There are three wooden
poles with green tips. It was to the south of the middle pole by about 20 ft.

Re: [cobirds] GYRFALCON/Weld

2018-12-07 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Great find, Rachel.

I am off to Jay's and once in the haze will think about gyrs. Tomorrow is
Janeal's birthday and her adopted family (the staff at the Chinese Restaurant)
is throwing her a party at 6:30. Hopefully I can get down there by then and
join the fun. Next week we will scout for John Martin CBC and then do the
count on the 17th. If I don't see you, have a good Christmas. The little
ones, especially Ryder, should be fun.

I have not seen the bird come back up, or I missed it when it did.

But, I will add to my report that the bird was quite brown & looked very
similar to the photos I have seen of Andy’s bird. I would not be surprised if
it is the same bird. In fact, I think likely.

Thousands of geese have now put down in the field slightly north of where I
last saw the gyr. Hundreds of Snow Geese mixed in. The largest group of Snow
Geese I have ever seen in Weld. And they are still pouring in.

[cobirds] GYRFALCON/ Weld County

2018-12-07 Thread Rachel Hopper
COBirdsrs,

I just had a GYRFALCON on Hwy 14 just west of RD. 47 in Weld.

The bird flew south along Hwy 14 & then crossed the rd, & flew north into a
field west of 47 & then dove to the ground near Owl Creek. I have not seen it
come back up so I assume it caught prey.

For inquiring minds, this is approx. 37 miles east of the Larimer landfill.

There is no access to the field where the gyr went to the ground. I am
currently sitting on Rd. 47 facing north to see if the bird comes back to a
visible area. Coordinates below.

A gyrfalcon was seen soaring over west central Fort Collins about 2 pm, near
the cemetery. It was very light with definitive black wing tips. Seen by two

Re: [cobirds] Gyrfalcon (No Sighting)

2018-12-06 Thread Pam Dowd
Thank you, Andy, for your polite and thoughtful e-mail.

2018 is my 50th anniversary year of birding. As you can well imagine during
those years I’ve seen “birding” evolve from a handful of folks with Peterson
Guides and a “phone tree” to share sightings to what seems to be a flood of
people, websites, e-lists, twitter notices and field guides that break down
species into sub-species and sub-sub-species.

It’s like everything in our society today, change can be both positive and
negative. I hope Andy’s comments will remind all of us to consider first the
welfare of the birds we so adore and second share our values with those who
come to see these creatures as we do with civility.

To this day I remember my first “bird walk” at Lake Ontelaunee in Pennsylvania
with a “gentle man” who took me under his wing and fostered a love of birds and
wildlife that became a core element of my life.

Helping others understand the protocol makes better birding for all of us.

I do think it is worth asking who uses the COBIRDS RBA report and getting
some data before deciding to continue the extensive effort or not, unless
someone just realyl enjoys doing it. Is there anyone out there who uses it

Personally, I have not used it much if at all. I have sometimes learned of
great birds in general COBIRDS posts but the RBA is a tool I haven't really
used much. I did use it a few times to try to find out if a bird had been
reported recently several days after the initial report when I didn't see
something in eBird, since I know not everyone uses eBird. I get rare bird
alerts for certain counties from eBird and they are more specific and
timely than the RBA for me personally, but I do rarely chase so my
experience may be atypical. I also learn of some birds on the CFO Facebook
page. I do wonder if there is some concern at least along the Front Range
about loving rare birds to death - i.e. publicizing a sighting very openly
possibly being harmful to the bird in question or to the reputation of
birders, etc.,, in part because there may simply be too many people
interested in seeing it, some of whom may be more 'rambunctious' in their
quests than others. I do not know that the RBA would be considered a
contributor to those concerns, if people have them, though. I appreciate
the willingness of people to share and compile exciting sightings even if I
do not go to see them because I do enjoy hearing about what of note is

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon; Do we want an RBA???

2018-12-06 Thread 'Allison Hilf' via Colorado Birds
I totally understand the sensitivity of a Gyrfalcon sighting, and consider it
like an owl. I agree with Andy and others that it should not be publicly
shared. I wish it would never have been reported and this discussion never
happened.

My comment was meant to be about the more general issue where most of the more
experienced CObirders no longer report any rare bird sightings to CObirds or
to the RBA.

I was ready to commit a considerable amount of time and effort into helping Joe
and others keep the RBA going after Joyce retires at the end of the year. I’m
now having serious doubts, as so few experienced Birders take the time to
report ANY rare findings to CObirds.

I don’t list and no longer chase anything but a lifer (Gyrfalcon is NOT a
lifer; I had no interest in chasing the bird). I help beginning Birders and
spend my time analyzing bird behaviors - we all bird differently.

I apologize if I came across critical of competitive listers; we can all agree
to enjoy birding differently. But do listers want to share sightings? If so,
is COBirds the place to do it, and are people willing to report sightings to
CObirds? Otherwise, why should we spend considerable time and effort on
compiling an RBA???

Please respond; as I need to know if anyone sincerely wants the RBA to continue.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon

2018-12-05 Thread Andrew Bankert
Let me start off by saying that the Gyrfalcon was not refound anywhere this
morning that I am aware of with people looking along Trilby Road and at the
landfill.

After thinking about it, I do not regret the 15 hour delay between
identifying and posting the Gyrfalcon to CObirds. I try to get the word
about rarities out as quickly as possible, but this Gyrfalcon was a special
case with both being a charismatic species drawing attention from a wider
number of people than your average rarity and being found in a restricted
area where we could easily lose access if there were any incidents
involving birders not following protocols at the landfill. As birders, I
understand how exciting it is to chase a rare bird and add a new tick to a
list, but I do wonder whether during our pursuits we forget about
considering the impacts we might have on the birds we chase and the areas
we visit.

Considering these impacts, including consulting with other birders, is what
happened during that 15 hour delay. Just last week while watching the
Grandview Cemetery Eastern Screech-Owl from a safe distance across the
canal, a group of us witnessed two, probably well intentioned, birders walk
right up to the tree the owl was roosting in while searching for it without
seeing it. Cases like this seem to occur somewhat regularly with
charismatic species that draw attention from more than just listers. There
has previously been suboptimal behavior and breaking of protocol from
chasers at rarities even within the same CBC Circle as the Gyrfalcon
(American Woodcock and Streak-backed Oriole come to mind). Normally, I
would trust in the birding community's ability to help educate this small
number of people, but the situation at the landfill is different with large
equipment with the potential to cause serious injury to someone not
following the landfill protocol. Such an event would surely ruin access to
one of my favorite birding spots in Larimer County, which we luckily have
the privilege to bird at unlike some other landfills in the state. One of
the gatekeepers at the landfill today did say that there were some problems
with birders not following protocols yesterday, which verified my concerns
about posting this sighting. Finally, the Gyrfalcon did not show up on any
eBird alerts because they have been deemed to be a sensitive species, and I
thought this was worth considering before plastering this sighting for
everyone to know about. It seems that in other states birders and
falconers have run into problems over Gyrfalcons, and it was not until
Tuesday morning that I was confident that it is illegal to trap a wild
Gyrfalcon in Colorado.

I still think we, as a birding community, should be excited when rare birds
show up and try to share them with everyone when appropriate, but I think
we do need to consider the impacts of both reporting rarities and chasing
birds. If you find a Red-faced Warbler at a city park there probably won't
be too much need for hesitation, but if you find a Snowy Owl that is best
viewed from an active construction site you might want to consider the
impacts of informing more than just a small group of people you know well.
I also hope we can appreciate birders who do consider the impacts their
hobby has on the birds they see, the places they visit, and the environment
as a whole. Finally, I do encourage anyone interested to visit a landfill
that allows access to look at gulls because you are often rewarded with a
good study of difficult-to-identify birds, just make sure you always follow
their rules and are constantly vigilant of your surroundings.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon

2018-12-05 Thread joe . kipper28
I was unable to find the Gyrfalcon today at 2:00pm at the landfill.
As far as I know no one else has seen it today either, but I have yet to
check Horsetooth Res. as Nick K. suggested.
Good luck to everyone else who searches for it.

Re: [cobirds] Gyrfalcon in Southern Fort Collins, Larimer County

2018-12-04 Thread Nicholas Komar
Some comments on the Gyrfalcon search:
1. If you visit the Larimer County landfill be sure to check in at one of the
pay windows (or the main office) and follow instructions for parking from
landfill employees. The gyr was first seen chasing gulls and perched on a
telephone pole yesterday afternoon around 3:30 pm.
2. Trilby Road (dirt road west from Taft Hill Road) is a safe vantage-point to
survey the grassland habitat and the landfill one mile north. The gyr came and
landed atop the tall rusty power line poles twice between 7 and 7:30 this
morning.
3. Taft Hill Rd is unsafe to park on, or even to drive slowly. Vehicle and
truck traffic move at 70 mph on this two lane road.
4. Hidden Springs road west of the landfill is a private gated community.
5. I think another place to search would be the south end of Horsetooth
Reservoir (where the landfill gulls go to loaf during the day). It is only a
mile away from the landfill as the crow flies , and has more tall metal poles
that could serve as perch. To get there drive north past landfill and turn left
on Harmony Road. To access the Reservoir recreational area a fee is required.
There are some free roadside pullouts as well.

2018-12-04 Thread Brandon
The landfill is a good place to look. The one Pueblo Gyrfalcon a while
back was seen at our landfill, and all the gulls flew. The Gyrfalcon up at
Rawhide Energy Station, was eating on geese all winter. Are there photos
of it yet, is it an adult or immature bird? There hasn't been one reported
in Colorado, in a few years, hopefully it hangs around for people to see it.

[cobirds] Gyrfalcon in Southern Fort Collins, Larimer County

2018-12-04 Thread Andrew Bankert
Yesterday I found a Gyfralcon in southern Fort Collins while birding along
Taft Hill Road. It was refound this morning by a few birders on the tall
power poles along Trilby Road where it intersects Taft Hill Road. I think
you can safely pull off along Trilby Road west of Taft Hill Road since it
looks like a small dirt road, but please be respectful of any signs marking
private property or private roads at the west end of Trilby.

Good Birding,
