Bill, Ok then Fountain Creek Nature Center and possibly Chico Ranch area.
2010?
The fact that you saw 'Juveniles" is most encouraging. I will check these
areas
out this summer. Red Headed Woodpeckers live about 10 years at the most.

2023-04-22 Thread Duck Cop
Diana, Thank You so much for that information regarding Red Headed
Woodpecker sightings
here in Colorado. Chico Basin I have heard of. Tamarack SWA I am not
familiar with. I will find
them though as soon as Winter leaves. Hopefully this summer I can see/hear
a RHW.
Thanks again, I moved to Colorado (Larimer County) near Ft Collins in 2016
from the East
Tennessee, where I had a pair attempted several times to nest, but always
failed due to
European Starlings. Daniel

David,
Ok, thanks. I have been on Ebird numerous times. However, I am fairly new
to Colorado
moving here in 2016. I had to go to Books a Million and purchase 4 new bird
books. Still
trying to find my way around these parts, but am improving. Exploring is
such fun.

[cobirds] Red headed Woodpecker and indigo/lazuli bunting, Eldorado Springs

2021-05-26 Thread elena
Cobirders, the red headed woodpeckers who have been along the Fowler Trail for
the last few years are back. The Fowler Trail is just east of Eldorado
Springs, and the birds are in a dead tree where they were the last couple of
years (maybe more, I am not sure, but for sure the last two years) about 3/4
mile from the trailhead (which becomes very crowded at times as parking is
limited). Also a little ways up the trail is a hybrid indigo/Lazuli bunting,
who was there last year, seen this morning in the same snag where he was seen
last year. Nice to have a little stability! The bunting has a blue head and
bib, whitish belly, no red at all, and seems to be singing a kind of mixed
song.

[cobirds] Red-Headed Woodpecker in Conifer

2021-05-21 Thread Carolyn
Pleased to report a 1st ever sighting in our yard of a red-headed
woodpecker - adult. Unknown if male/female - unable to find info on
distinguishing between the two? Human husband remarked "that bird looks
chubby" which I quickly admonished with "birds don't get fat!!" but then
wondered if it could be a pregnant female seeking a nesting site? This one
flew-hopped from tree to tree, taking time on each (mostly pine types, some
juniper, some fir), not necessarily pecking and without haste seemed to
also be checking out our few birdhouses and bird / squirrel / nature-made
"condos" in the few deadened trees we have perhaps conducting a general
survey? We are approximately 9K feet, west of Aspen Park.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker, Jefferson County

2020-10-18 Thread Brian Johnson
There is a juvenile read-headed Woodpecker counting at Harriman Lake today.
I was alerted to it's prescience by it's calls. Being a young bird (meaning
it's black on the back) it blends in nicely with the tree.
I was made aware of the fact it was at the park by another birder (whose
name I did not get) and it was reported back in late September, so I am not
the finder of this bird. I am just letting people know it's present.
I saw it in a front yard tree along the south property line along the
fence east of the irrigation ditch, also know as warbler woods. I was
heading into those trees being told that is where it was so this bird is
moving along the south side of the park. It was seen at 8:30 this morning.
Here is a link to my ebird checklist with photos.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker, CCSP, Arapahoe County

2020-05-22 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning, birders!

This morning (about 9:15), just north of the intersection of Belleview and
Havana, in the “wetlandsy-creekbed” I found a lovely Red-headed woodpecker!
Very conveniently clinging to a snag on the top of a dead tree. I was able to
get very good looks at it (I don’t carry a camera).

Nice to get an unexpected State/County bird!

Earlier, down near the Cottonwood Creek pond (the one near the wild-life
overlook), but downstream from the pond, I had a very striking Eastern Kingbird
working the liminal zone between some willows and the meadows.

Surprises await!

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker report, Chaffee Cty

2017-05-25 Thread Eric DeFonso
Hi folks,

A nonbirding friend of mine living in Salida plausibly described seeing and
photographing (poorly) what sounds to me like a Red-headed Woodpecker in
Salida in Chaffee County a couple days ago. She mentioned that a friend of
hers who was with her and is more familiar with birds also was convinced
that's what it was. This was around the dog park on Holman Avenue, as I
understand.

Just passing that along in case anyone was curious. That would seem to be
an unusual find for the area, according to eBird.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker Bear Creek Park (Denver County) Today

2016-05-27 Thread Tom Behnfield
Birders,

I was treated to a Red-headed Woodpecker this afternoon at Bear Creek Park
aka "the Hat Park" in Denver County. It was moving amongst the large trees
south of Bear Creek and west of the western bridge near the playground.
Photos are attached. The park was rather quiet, with just one Yellow
Warbler, 3 Spotted Sandpipers, one Snowy Egret, along with several other
common species. The RHWO made an otherwise uneventful afternoon exciting!

Good birding!

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker at Zapata Ranch

2016-05-19 Thread mvjohnski
Today I observed an adult Red-headed Woodpecker at the Zapata Ranch near
Mosca, Colorado (Alamosa County). This is the first time I have ever seen
one here in the 34 years of birding the San Luis Valley. According to the
local records I keep, this is the 5th record for the San Luis Valley. It
sure made my day for sure.

For the record, Zapata Ranch is a private guest ranch and not open to
general birders. But I think it is important that birders know that this
bird is in the area, and should be watched for in this locality.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker - Marjorie Perry NP (Arapahoe Co.)

2016-05-07 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning, while walking my dog at Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve, I had
a brief encounter with a *Red-headed Woodpecker*. The bird, which was high
in a tree along the High Line Canal on the eastern side of the preserve,
didn't seem to want to stick around, flying into the surrounding community
after I snapped some photos.

Also at the preserve was an early *MacGillvray's Warbler* and the first *Turkey
Vulture* I've seen in west Arapahoe Co since early-April. During an earlier
visit this morning, without the dog, I spotted a female *Lazuli Bunting*. I
thought I heard a catbird, but never saw it and could have been fooled by
the various sounds that the dozens of Common Grackle, Red-winged
Blackbirds, and starling make. As I was leaving the preserve during that
first visit, an *Osprey* flew over. I didn't see it during my second visit,
but I've read that they're sometimes found at the Preserve. Several singing
*Yellow
Warbler* were around too, my first of the season.

Between the trips to the preserve, I spotted two *Brewer's Sparrow* and an
*Orange-crowned
Warbler *in my yard in west Centennial.

Poor photos of the woodpecker and the MacGillvray's are on my eBird
checklist .

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker/Larimer

2014-06-04 Thread Carol Sullivan
On May 26, a Red-headed Woodpecker appeared and began calling from a burned
ridge on our property. He has consistently moved to the national forest and
back to our ridge. While these birds are not a rarity, it is interesting to
me that they are attracted to burn areas.

It has been 2 years since the High Park Fire which destroyed nearly 88,000
acres and the RHWO has chosen our small acreage of black timber to do his
business. This morning, I saw that he has been successful in calling in a
mate! If they set up housekeeping on our property, I will post again.

There is always something happening up here since the fire to make me count
my blessings!

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker in Fremont County directions

2013-03-01 Thread Brandon K. Percival
The immature Red-headed Woodpecker was on the North Side of the Arkansas River,
at Pathfinder Park (between Florence and Canon City along Hwy 115).  There are
four or five big cottonwood trees on the North Side of the River.  It was in
the eastern most tree.  I walked east from the parking lot near the boat ramp,
fishing pond, until I could see the trees from the dirt trail.  You'll have to
look across the river, to see these trees.  I don't know if the bird ever comes
to the south side of the river or not.  This map gets to close.
https://maps.google.com/?q=38.41243,-105.146866+(Red-headed+Woodpecker)  The
trees are east of here, though not too far.  I think this bird has been around
since the end of December in the same trees and seen by many, so I didn't try
to explain where the bird was, from my phone this morning.  Since the bird is
kind of far away, you might want to carry a scope, for the best views.  I think
this bird is mostly of
interest to local birders, as we don't see them very often in Fremont County
(I hadn't ever seen one actually in this county).  My photos of the bird from a
distance can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/

Sandy Arnesen and I did some atlasing in the Lamar area this past week.
We saw Red-headed Woodpeckers in several of our blocks and confirmed
breeding in 3 of our blocks. But we did not see or hear any other woodpeckers
in our blocks.

We had found an injured raptor so not knowing what to do in the area, I
called Duane Nelson and he told us what to do (call DOW). I asked Duane
what he thought about the Red-headed Woodpeckers. His thought is that
they have been displaced from the East because of the weather, floods, etc
so have arrived in Colorado.

We saw another Red-headed on our way home this morning.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker at Butterfly Woods - Ft. Collins (Larimer)

2011-06-15 Thread Andrew Core
I birded a section of the West Poudre River Trail northwest of Ft. Collins
this morning with some friends and was pleased to find a Red-headed
Woodpecker in the grove of tall dead cottonwood trees. I got a few photos
and it called twice before the flickers chased it off to the north. Sounds
like there have been quite a few around recently.

A Blue Grosbeak was singing a few hundred yards east and I was able to get
it in the scope from about 20 yards away for my companions, who were on
their first-ever birding trip.

We parked at the Lions Park lot off Overland Trail and walked east; the
river is still quite high and the path under the bridge is closed but the
rest of the trail was open.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker: El Paso County

2011-05-27 Thread Yeti Man
Got off work earlier today.
Decided to try and get pictures of the Eastern Kingbirds, Western
Kingbirds, and Say's Phoebes that are all over the fences out here by
my house.
I was driving east on Drennan, almost to Meridian Road, when I saw an
amazing bird!
Ever since I purchased Ted Floyd's book titled Smithsonian Field
Guide to the Birds of North America, I have wanted to see this bird.
Today I got to see it!
Forget about the kingbirds, larks, etc, that were flying around,
I got to see the Red-headed Woodpecker!

Awesome!

Location: along the fence posts on East Drennan, about two miles east
of the intersection of Marksheffel and Drennan.

Have a nice weekend.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker in Custer Co.

2011-01-27 Thread millerrichj
This morning I saw a juv. Red-headed Woodpecker in Wetmore, Custer Co. It
was in the cottonwoods along Hardscrabble Creek across from the Wetmore
Community Center. No doubt it was the same one I saw at this location one
month ago. In addition to being out of range and out of season, it appears
to be spending the winter in this small town at the foot of the Wet
Mountains. Very strange.

Andrews Righter report that one was recorded in Pueblo Co. near Wetmore
on Jan. 1972.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker in Custer Co.

2010-12-22 Thread millerrichj
This morning I found a juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker in Wetmore, Custer
Co. It was in a large, dead cottonwood along Hardscrabble Cr. across from
the Wetmore Community Center. The brown head showed some traces of red. I
got a few pictures before it flew.

North of Wetmore there were four Eastern Bluebirds along CR 298.

[cobirds] Red-Headed Woodpecker Pawnee Grasslands

2009-06-05 Thread Jessie Meschievitz
Hello:

On Thursday, June 4th when traveling southbound on CR57 through the Pawnee
Grasslands I saw a red-headed woodpecker working its way on the fence posts.
We were within 10 minutes of the intersection with Hwy 14. The wildflowers
on the grasslands are so spectacular this Spring!

[cobirds] Red headed woodpecker, RBG Crow Valley

2009-05-15 Thread JohnT

Cobirds:
A group of six birders were in my group today (Friday 15th)
at Crow Valley. We saw a couple birds that havn't been listed:
RED HEADED WOODPECKER - 1 at Crow Valley
ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAK - 1 male with three black headed grosbeaks - at
CV
WHITE THROATED SPARROW - several still present at CV

The wind was nasty today, but we perserved. Saw over 400 lark
buntings, mccown's longspurs, maybe 13 swaisons hawks (including
several on nests), loggerhead shrikes (at least one nest site), gray
catbird, spotted towhee, brown thrashers, lots of mockingbirds (8),
yellow warblers, long billed dowitchers, red necked phalaropes (2 at
Crom Lake pointed out by Gary Lefko), burrowing owl, mountain plover
(1), blue grosbeak (1 east of Fort Collins), great horned owl (4 -
including one chick on a nest), bullsnake (2), antelope (17), and
scads of other birds and animals. Even with the wind, Pawnee is still
a great place to camp and explore. - John Tumasonis, Boulder
Audubon.
