[cobirds] Vermilion flycatcher(s) --- El Paso and Baca counties
COBirders, This morning what is presumably a returning bird from the pair that bred last year was at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs. Hopefully, they will be successful breeders at this location again. On Wednesday on private property in Baca County, there was a male Vermilion. It was occasionally displaying. [cobirds] Vermilion Flycatcher - Douglas County, Chatfield, between Sandspit and Delta
I found a Vermilion Flycatcher along the water between the Sandspit and Plum Creek Delta. First seen at (39.5411423, -105.0541053), then later refound east of there at (39.543111, -105.051724). It was mainly picking insects off the surface of the water. If you want to pursue, I suggest starting near the Sandspit then walking east along the water, watching for it along the way. Just seen in brushy meadow along Sand Creek at least 200-300 yards upstream from lake area, roughly north of prairie dog town, flycatching from dead snags and back- and- forthing to creek. All, The stunning flycatcher was seen at 8 a.m. this morning by a few of us. It was still there at 10:30 when I stopped by. The entire time I saw was there, the bird was behind the fire station in the lot - on a fence, cholla or tree. It was not scared off by 3 large, noisy commercial trucks that spent some time there. Thanks again, Bill Kosar. Also at the fire station were a Curve-billed Thrasher, two Say's Phoebe's, and two singing Cassin's Sparrows. If you head to Chico, the banding station was very quiet, but the road into the station boasted 4 Sage Thrashers and a few Scaled Quail. The prairie dog town at Hanover and DeGroot had 4 Burrowing Owls. [cobirds] Vermilion Flycatcher
After a thorough search of the area east of Carolyn Armstrong Fishing Access, the Vermilion Flycatcher was not spotted..so far today. I covered the hillside to the east all the way to Smoky Hill Parking lot. I searched from about 1030 to 1230. There was a breeze from the north and it was 50 degrees. It was fairly "buggy", but no flycatcher in sight. I did, however, come upon a lone Sage Thrasher. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Vermilion Flycatcher in Pueblo 4/5
The last location of the male Vermilion Flycatcher, was west of the Cottonwood Picnic Area, along the Arkansas River, between this parking lot and road bridge (this is east/below Pueblo Reservoir dam), Pueblo County. It on both sides of the river, and seen by several people from the road bridge looking east. The bird was first found by Pearle Sandstorm-Smith and Clif Smith. Several of us searched for hours in the heat, and couldn't find it, Joy and Richard Lake, re-found it from the road bridge. There is a territorial singing Eastern Phoebe under this bridge, which did chase the Vermilion Flycatcher a couple of times. I'll try to post tomorrow as early as possible, if it is still present. [cobirds] Vermilion Flycatcher in San Luis Valley
Hi all: Exciting bird has been found between Del Norte and South Fork. An adult male Vermilion Flycatcher has been seen at Ann Cummings place near the Rio Grande. If you wish to see this bird you must get permission first. Call Ann at 719 849-1750 and make arrangements. Directions to her place: From Hwy 160 between Del Norte and South Fork, take Hanna Lane north across the Rio Grande River. When you come to the T (Cty Rd 15), turn west (left) and go for about 1 mile until you see a rack of 5 mailboxes on the south side of the road. Take the immediate left (going south) on a native surface road. Keep going straight and it winds a bit toward the end but look for the cedar house at the end of the gravel road. This bird is only the third record for the San Luis Valley and one of about 30 (RA) for the State. Lisa and I saw it yesterday afternoon, but so far was not seen this morning. Great bird! [cobirds] Vermilion Flycatcher in Canon City area
This evening I found a first year female Vermilion Flycatcher on private property in the Canon City area. I first Fremont County Vermilion, which I also found, was also a first year female. When I first spotted the bird it was pumping it's tail phoebe-like--that and it's light coloration were indicators of it's identification. I was able to get some photos at about 90 feet but it was 6:30 pm so the light wasn't great. I uploaded them to myBirdsAndNaturehttp://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.comblog. When I tried to get 20 feet closer, this very shy bird flew further away and I was subsequently unable to refind it. I will look again tomorrow but the first Vermilion I found here was only stayed for another day or two. While I was trying to photograph the Vermilion I saw first a very large flock of 200-300 Plegadis ibis fly from the Canon City area towards Florence, then several more smaller flocks of these ibis for a total of around 400-500 birds--though the Vermilion was a fun rarity, the ibis overflights were pretty awesome and distracting. Other interesting birds around the area but it's late and I have to get up early tomorrow so will report later. The Vermilion Flycatcher was partial to three locust trees near the corral, and a lone saltcedar just south of the main dwelling.
