[cobirds] Windsor Lake (Weld) on 5/2/22
I birded Windsor Lake for 3 hours plus today, mostly hiding behind a pole near the swim beach to escape the wind watching and photographing gulls and terns and eventually did a lap. Once comfortably numb it wasn't too bad. Amazing disappearance of the big merganser flock. Still 150 or so western grebes plus one Clark's. 35 Bonaparte's gulls tripped the ebird filter for some reason. Two Caspian terns worked the shoreline but never landed that I could see. At least 4 Forster's terns tried to fish and then avoid the bully gulls. Did not see the diversity or numbers of shorebirds I sort of expected. A few Wilson's phalaropes, a couple willets, a couple avocets, one killdeer, that's it. Hundreds of swallows on the lake, almost all cliff and barn. Heard my FOY clay-colored sparrow amid the houses on the south side. No Yucatan vireo. Enjoyed watching a northern rough-winged swallow gather bits of dry grass for nest liner and make runs back and forth to its burrow in a ditch bank northeast of the reservoir. 52 species total plus an unidentified accipiter, probably a Cooper's. eBird checklist link below: https://ebird.org/checklist/S108776014 Dave Leatherman Fort Collins -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Windsor Lake (Weld)
One highlight I forgot to mention at Windsor Lake this afternoon was approximately 30 Snow Geese in with all the Cacklers. Of course, the correct first name of the Tundra Swan finder at Timnath Res is Cole (misspelled in my other posting). Thank you to Cole and Josh for their finds. [cobirds] Windsor Lake (Weld) on 3/13/15
Seen today during Front Range Community College field trips to Windsor Lake (in the town of Windsor, accessed off 7th on Cedar): Glaucous Gull (1 subadult, not sure which cycle but probably 2nd or 3rd, the champion kleptoparasite, mostly victimizing goldeneye)) Thayer's Gull (at least 2 juveniles) Franklin's Gull (1 black-headed adult) Long-tailed Duck (1 female, can be really tough to find when diving, look amid groups of other ducks, mostly seen at the north end) Barrow's Goldeneye (1 female) majority of waterfowl on the lake are Ring-billed Gulls, Herring Gulls, Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, and Lesser Scaup. [cobirds] Windsor Lake (Weld) on 3/9/15
On this day of melt and appearing gizzard shad (both live and dead, in open areas and in the ice), I visited Windsor Lake on the east side of downtown Windsor (Weld) and had the following highlights: Bald Eagle (2 adults) Red-breasted Merganser (several) Thayer's Gull (1 juv.) California Gull (1 a) Herring Gull (dozens) Lesser Black-backed Gull (1a, 1 3rd-cycle) Long-tailed Duck (1 (f?)) prominent lower face oval, short tail (can't remember the gender of the bird Austin Hess found here, may be the same one) Common Goldeneye (hundreds) Dave Leatherman Fort Collins -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Windsor Lake, Weld County, Cackling Goose (True Cackling Goose- Bh minima)
Greetings All, I have finally gotten pics (with ID commentary) of today's minima Cackling Goose up on my Flickr Site. They can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/36088296@N08/ Note that there are some reference photos that precede photos of the actual bird... There was not a FLOCK of minima present :o) Windsor Lake is alive with birds. Hundreds of Common Mergs and Common Goldeneye, dozens of RB Mergansers, an immature LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, a THAYER'S GULL. I did wonder where the White Pelicans were... apparently all at Panama Reservoir. Oh yes, one male Cinnamon Teal standing on ice with Canada Geese and RB Gulls. Other highlights include the long-staying TUNDRA SWAN at Jackson Reservoir (best viewed from the SWA parking area on north side). Jackson was pretty impressive today, with 2000+ Redhead, many thousand Canada Geese, 2 Snow x Canada Geese, a Snow x Ross's Goose, 400+ Canvasback Also of interest was the utter lack of gulls and very low numbers of mergansers... basically, very few fish-eaters on Jackson, likely indicating a lack of piscine prey. Some dinky ponds at nearby Andrick Ponds had more Common Mergs. Okay, bedtime for this Bonzo Steve Mlodinow Longmont CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
