[CODE4LIB] Job: Digital Library Operation Service Manager (INSPIREhep.net) at CERN

2014-12-08 Thread jobs
Digital Library Operation Service Manager (INSPIREhep.net)
CERN
Geneva

With partners in Europe, the U.S. and China, CERN provides a digital library
service to the High-Energy Physics community worldwide with INSPIRE
(INSPIREhep.net). This digital library serves over 1 million records to 50'000
scientists in the field worldwide, the entire literature of decades of High-
Energy Physics and related disciplines. Based on the Open Source Invenio
digital library, and a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python) stack, INSPIRE is
searched several times per second, all year around. New content is added semi-
automatically daily, with new articles coming from sister infrastructures such
as arXiv.org and leading scientific publishers in the field. A team of
librarians worldwide assures the smooth presentation and coherence of this
scientific content. INSPIRE is now developing new user-centric services to
allow users to enhance metadata, and increasingly supplying services to
publish and re-use research data and software.

The INSPIRE Service Manager has responsibility for the management of the
INSPIRE service at CERN, and support worldwide operations. In particular:

- Co-ordinate the INSPIRE day-to-day operations under CERN responsibility in
three main areas: (1) technical operation of content ingestion and curation
workflows; (2) system uptime and service level; (3) software design,
development, integration and deployment.
- Lead junior software engineers and students who are developing short- and
medium-term solutions for INSPIRE specific software and service needs.
- Play a central role in the design and implementation of solutions for
seamless interoperability of INSPIRE and all other relevant information
platforms operated both by the community and the publishing industry.
- Pro-actively analyse technology trends, user feedback, usage logs, and
usability test results to suggest strategy to enhance user experience and
service level.

Qualification and Experience

- Master's degree in the field of scientific, preferably in computer science or
software engineering, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in a key operational role for a large-scale digital
library of scientific publications.
- Proven experience in the co-ordination of open source projects.
- Work experience in a LAMP environment (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python) and
version control systems.
- An understanding of how scholarly communication works, preferably in
High-Energy Physics.
- Knowledge of the Invenio software, familiarity with Agile software management
and leadership of geographically distributed teams would be assets for this
position.

CERN Staff is hired from its Member States [http://jobs.web.cern.ch/content
/member-states], and this position is for a 3-years appointment. Salary is
commensurate with seniority. Entry-level remuneration for this job category is
in the range of 96'000-109'000 CHF/year, net of taxes. More information on
benefits is available
[http://cds.cern.ch/record/1664325/files/Employment_Conditions_EN.pdf].

Closing date January 5h, 2015.

[CODE4LIB] PBCore RDF ontology hackathon before Code4Lib

2014-12-08 Thread Casey Davis
Greetings,

I'm emailing you on behalf of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA)
PBCore Advisory Subcommittee to tell you about an event we are coordinating to
take place in Portland, Oregon before Code4Lib -- to develop an RDF ontology
for PBCore. We will be meeting an an airbnb about 4 miles from the conference
hotel on February 7-8, 2015.

PBCore is a metadata schema for audiovisual materials and was developed about
10 years ago by public broadcasters. Since then, the XML schema has been
revised multiple times and adopted by a number of archives and archivists in
the moving image archival community. The PBCore Advisory Subcommittee recently
held a how-to and why-to webinar, which you can watch here:
https://vimeo.com/aapb/pbcore.

We welcome anyone else who wants to join us and take part in the PBCore RDF
ontology hackathon. If you're interested, email me off list and I'll give you
more info.

Best,
Casey

My library isn't letting me sign up for this until 2015 because
bureaucracy. Is there any way the registration can continue to be open
through say, the first week of next year? I realize the whole thing may
well be sold out by then anyway. Perhaps there would be a way to get onto
the waiting list preemptively for those of us with paperwork problems?

The block rates aren't available for Friday (they are Sunday night through
Thursday night), so if you are selecting Friday, you might be hitting a
snag.

It's also possible that the block is filled for thursday. We can contact
the hotel about expanding the block, and getting a current report on where
we stand. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday's blocks are larger than the
number of currently registered attendees, so you should still be able to
book then.

I would also recommend giving the hotel a call and seeing what they can do
for you about good rates for the weekend.

I'm told we're not currently out of block space for any of Sunday-Thursday
nights.

If you're having trouble, calling the hotel directly is probably the best
solution.

We'll do our best to stay on top of the block status and expand it where
needed. The hotel has been very flexible thus far, and I get the
impression they would be glad if we booked them solid.

I'm also being told that you will likely get the block rate for the weekend
if you call and ask.

Again, we're working to make sure the edge dates stay available and ready
to ask the hotel to expand any dates that fill up.

2014-12-08 Thread Ethan Gruber
Thanks for the info. I'm glad I'm not the only person struggling with this.
I'm not entirely sure my architecture will allow me to append question
marks in this way (two question marks is probably feasible, but it doesn't
appear that one is). I don't believe that the ARK spec and HTTP URIs are
fully compatible ideas. Hopefully some clearer request parameter or content
negotiation standards emerge.

As Mark mentioned we have implemented the ARK inflections of ? and ?? with

I remember the single ? being a bit of a problem to implement in our

 possible with (Apache/mod_wsgi/Django) at all.

The ?? inflection wasn't really a problem for us on either of the systems.

From conversations I've had with implementors of ARK, the issues around
supporting the ? and ?? inflections don't seem to be related to the
frameworks issues as other issues like commitment to identifiers, the fact
that ARKs are being used in a redirection based system like Handles, or the
challenges of accessing the item metadata for items elsewhere in their
 system.

I think having a standard set of request parameters or other url
conventions could be beneficial to the implementation of these features by
 others.

 ARK

   From the article:

An ARK contains the label *ark:* after the URL's hostname, which sets
  the

  returns

Probably because, and correct me if I'm wrong, using question marks in

So, has anyone successfully implemented this? Is it even worth it? I'm

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib 2015 Preconference: Presentations workshop

2014-12-08 Thread Chris Beer
Hi all (but particularly this year’s presenters and those thinking about giving
lightning talks),

With registration for Code4Lib 2015 now open, I wanted to plug the workshop I’m
facilitating. From the wiki:

This is a preconference session intended for first time Code4Lib speakers,
habitual procrastinators, experienced speakers, those thinking about offering
lightning talks, etc. If you're preparing a talk for this year's Code4Lib,
this workshop is an opportunity to rehearse your presentation, get feedback
from peers, get familiar with the presentation technology, etc.

Thanks,
Chris

Me three. We’re working on this - I just went through the process via
phone to do a reservation that way. You may have to ask for the Oregon
State University Conference Services block, rather than code4lib (I had
that problem.) They’ll tell you the block is sold out on the 12th - we’re
working on getting more.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Functional Archival Resource Keys

2014-12-08 Thread John A. Kunze

Any Apache server (not Tomcat) can handle the '?' and '??' cases with a
few rewrite rules to transform them into typical CGI-like query strings.

  # Detect ? and ?? inflections and map to typical CGI-style parameters.
  # One question mark case: ? - ?show=briefas=anvl/erc
  RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} \?
  RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^$
  RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1?show=briefas=anvl/erc

  # Two question mark case: ?? - ?show=supportas=anvl/erc
  RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^\?$
  RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1?show=supportas=anvl/erc

So if your architecture supports query strings of the form

  ?name1=value1name2=value2...

it can support ARK inflections.

I don't believe that the ARK spec and HTTP URIs are fully compatible ideas.

True. A '?' by itself has no meaning in the URI spec, which means it's
also an opportunity to do something intuitive and important with an
unused portion of the instruction space (of strings that start out
looking like URLs). Any URLs (not just ARKs) could support this.

The THUMP spec (where inflections really live) will be modified to
require an extra HTTP response header to indicate that the server is
responding to an inflection and not to a standard URI query string.
This could help in the '??' case, which actually could be interpreted
as a valid URI query string.

I think having a standard set of request parameters or other url

Just as a URL permits an ordinary user with a web browser to get to an
object, inflections permit an ordinary user to see metadata (without curl
or code).

There's nothing to prevent a server from supporting both the HTTP Accept
header (content negotiation) and inflections. If you can do the one, the
other should be pretty easy.

So if your architecture supports query strings of the form

?name1=value1name2=value2...

  it can support ARK inflections.

I don't believe that the ARK spec and HTTP URIs are fully compatible

I just tried the link from the registration page:

 https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?mode=welcome_ei_neweventID=117148

  ,
and then clicked on łmake a reservation˛, and it allowed me to
  select
  dates and get a room.
