[CODE4LIB] Recommendations for places to advertise for a library systems guru?

2015-04-22 Thread Jon Gorman
Hi all,

I thought I'd ask folks what resources and places one could advertise
positions that might not fall in some of the more traditional for libraries
for systems folks.

The more obvious seem to be LITA/ALA, here at Code4Lib, and perhaps some of
the other library organizations. Also postings in newspapers in the area is
a typical move by us.

But I'm also considering IEEE ACM job listings and asking CS faculty for
recommendations.

I'm sure there's even more that I haven't thought of. So I'm curious about
other suggestions or ideas? Particularly are there any that have worked to
draw in candidates with a strong IT background?

Re: [CODE4LIB] Managing internal documentation

2015-04-22 Thread McAulay, Elizabeth
A late, but very enthusiastic hurrah on this topic. As a project manager at
UCLA, I couldn't live without Confluence and Jira. I love them -- they are an
essential component of communication and also help contribute to transparency
across library departments.

On Apr 9, 2015, at 12:50 PM, Gary Thompson g...@library.ucla.edu wrote:

The Digital Initiatives and IT (DIIT) department at the UCLA Library
transformed the way we work over the last 6 years after implementing
Confluence. We've got two teams of developers (3 focused on the Digital
Library, 6 on everything else), a team of 4 Digital Library project managers,
and an operations staff of 18,; we all rely on the wiki. It has proved
essential after a couple of recent staff departures.

Confluence supports the basic wiki model of linked and tagged documents, but
allows people who like to hierarchy to organize content in a tree. We make
heavy use of the /metadata-list/ macro to format the structure, and generate
views or lists of content (e.g., lists of serves, vendors, projects, etc)
controlled by labels (i.e., tags) using the /metadata-report/ macro. We use
tagging to indicate project status (definition, planning, execution), type of
content (server-logs, specifications), or technology (voyager, drupal).

We're running our own service; Atlassian on-demand was not an option when we
started. If we weren't using local LDAP authentication, we might consider
migrating to a hosted service. I suspect that we will eventually move to
hosted Confluence, but it's not currently a priority.

The wiki became so integral to the way we work that we decided to replace our
old ticketing system (FootPrints) with Jira to take advantage of the
 integration.

Our DIIT implementation was so successful that other Library departments and
locations are starting to use it, some in very sophisticated ways. For
example, a cross-department digitization team uses it to accept requests,
prioritize the work, and track progress.

I would be happy to show anyone who is interested how we use it. A colleague
and I considered writing a Code4Lib Journal article on our project management
methodology, but that article didn't get focus. This question -- and my
answer -- may motivate me to get it done.

 Hi all --

We are investigating several software platforms for creating and managing
internal documentation and wanted to see what experiences others have had

 We are evaluating
 * MadCap Flare
 * Adobe RoboHelp
 * Confluence

Our initial goals for these systems are to replace or augment our existing
documentation strategy, which is a mix of private Google sites, SharePoint
and Word docs. We are starting with our IT department but hope to include
 other user groups over time.

 Things we like:
 * SVN control with MapCap and RoboHelp. However, we have run into problems
 with both of their implementations
 * Write once publish everywhere functionality
 * HTML5 support with WebHelp Plus
 * Context aware searching
 * Easily export and share documentation externally (PDF)
 * Consistent theming and styling across all the documentation
 * User/group security management for hiding more sysadmin documentation

 Things we don't like
 * Windows only (MadCap and RoboHelp)
 * WebHelp requires IIS (?)
 * Limited functionality with the hosted version of Confluence

What are people using to manage their internal
systems/architecture/application documentation? Are there other products we
 should be considering?

Consider going through the required skills for the position and look for
local meetups for those skills.
There's likely a local/regional user group dedicated to those skills.
For example: DevOps, language, framework specific groups.

This. Also might not hurt to consider LinkedIn -- results from there can

Whatever you do, all committee members should use their professional

best candidates might not realize they're in the market until someone talks

I think Stack Overflow Careers is good, but expensive. I've had HR contacts
blanch at it, and suggest Dice instead, because that's what they have
experience with. But I don't think I've ever had a successful candidate
from Dice, and it's not cheap either, IIRC.

My suggestion is Craigslist! A quick poll of recent hires in my department
says they heard about the jobs from Craigslist, LinkedIn, and having a
former colleague already working here who sent them the job bulletin.

[CODE4LIB] Introducing EarthWorks, Stanford's new GIS data discovery application

2015-04-22 Thread Jack Reed
Greetings and Happy Earth Day,

Apologies for any cross postings.

Stanford University Libraries is happy to introduce EarthWorks
[https://earthworks.stanford.edu], our new geospatial data discovery
application. EarthWorks allows you to discover and download GIS data and maps
from a variety of institutions.

The software is built on top of the open-source project GeoBlacklight
[http://geoblacklight.org], which adds geospatial capabilities to the widely
used discovery system Project Blacklight [http://projectblacklight.org/].
GeoBlacklight is the product of an ongoing software collaboration between MIT,
Princeton, and Stanford. Contributions and collaborators are most welcome!
https://github.com/geoblacklight/geoblacklight/wiki/Contributing GeoBlacklight
can be used on its own, or as part of GeoHydra, an emerging suite of tools for
managing geospatial data assets within a Hydra data repository. For more
information about GeoHydra, please see the interest group wiki
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/hydra/Hydra+Geospatial+Interest+Group .

Metadata sharing for EarthWorks is enabled through collaboration with the
OpenGeoPortal project [http://opengeoportal.org/] and the new OpenGeoMetadata
initiative [https://github.com/OpenGeoMetadata/metadatarepository].

EarthWorks also uses GeoMonitor [https://geomonitor.stanford.edu/] to monitor
the availability of data being provided by the network of collaborating
institutions.

Questions about EarthWorks, GeoBlacklight, GeoMonitor, or how we collaborate
with OpenGeoMetadata can be directed to
geoblacklight-working-gr...@googlegroups.com .

[CODE4LIB] Release of Guide on the Side 1.0-beta4

2015-04-22 Thread Hagedon, Mike - (mhagedon)
[Apologies for cross-posting...]

The University of Arizona Libraries are happy to announce the release of Guide
on the Side
1.0-beta4https://github.com/ualibraries/Guide-on-the-Side/releases/tag/1.0-beta4.

Guide on the Side (GotS) is an open-source, web-based tool for making
interactive tutorials.

For this release, we focused on addressing frame busting by allowing creators
to place GotS into popup mode when they find that the right frame starting URL
is not working. We also updated the placement of the navigation arrows (they
are now closer to the text), and have made it so that users are able to click
on images that are embedded in a tutorial to make them larger. Creators can now
also delete quizzes from tutorials. See the full list of
changeshttps://github.com/ualibraries/Guide-on-the-Side/blob/1.0-beta4/RELEASE.md#10-beta4-2015-04-22.
See the upgrade
noteshttps://github.com/ualibraries/Guide-on-the-Side/blob/1.0-beta4/UPGRADE.md
for more information. Those installing for the first time may want to start on
our website: http://code.library.arizona.edu/gots.
