[CODE4LIB] OCLC Software Development Practices Webinars
The OCLC Developer Network is offering two free, 1-hour webinars based on our recent popular blog series covering some of our favorite software development practices: Finding a Common Language: Putting Software Development Practices to Use - November 11, 11:00am ET This webinar is designed for anyone who is struggling with how to communicate actionable feature or product requirements. Whether you're a librarian, developer or something in-between--you'll find useful tools to create a middle ground of understanding for everyone involved in the project. How to Code for Users: Putting Software Development Practices to the Test - November 20, 1pm ET This webinar is designed for any developer who has seen a project lose its way somewhere between the requirements and the (not-so) finished product. We'll cover how to test your new code's behavior against the goals and experiences defined in user stories and acceptance criteria. Visit the OCLC Developer Network site to learn more and to registerhttp://oc.lc/94pkqE. Drop us note at dev...@oclc.orgmailto:dev...@oclc.org if you have any questions. [CODE4LIB] OCLC inviting nominations for the next Developer House
OCLC invites you to nominate library technologists for our next Developer House eventhttp://oc.lc/vQcRkQ, where participants will identify and work on hands-on projects putting OCLC Web services to work solving real-world problems for libraries and their users. Sponsored by the http://oclc.org/developer.en.html OCLC Developer Networkhttp://www.oclc.org/developer/home.en.html, Developer House is a place where library technologists can gather together for five days to share their perspectives and expertise as they hack on OCLC web services. Participants will join us in Dublin December 1st - 5th, 2014 and can take advantage of dedicated time and space away from competing priorities to solve problems and sharpen skills while working on applications, code libraries, articles, or other projects employing OCLC Web services in support of libraries. There will be lots of room to spread out over couches, tables and bean bags while working alongside OCLC technical staff, learning and enjoying plenty of unstructured, hands-on work time. This Developer House will aim at producing projects concentrated around users' discovery needs. There are a variety of projects to work on in this space, and they could include anything from targeted enhancements in existing interfaces to creating new discovery interfaces. There is a lot of potential to explore in the emerging trends in Linked Data and Entity-based description, including the possibilities for bringing new, uncatalogued data into a discovery interface. The OCLC Developer Network is now accepting nominations through September 22, 2014. We're looking for innovative thinkers and problem solvers who are knowledgeable about discovery. Some demonstrated familiarity with APIs and OCLC Web services will be considered beneficial. If you know someone who's been thinking creatively about discovery, please encourage their nomination. Self-nominations are also welcome. Apply and carve out some time to take a bite out of this exciting problem space. [CODE4LIB] OCLC VIAF API Workshop July 17
The OCLC Developer Network is offering a free webinar, the VIAF API Workshop, on Thursday, July 17th at 1pm ET. Ralph LeVan, Senior Research Scientist at OCLC, will provide an overview of the VIAF (Virtual International Authority File) APIhttp://oclc.org/developer/develop/web-services/virtual-international-authority-file-viaf.en.html which provides access to national and regional-level authority records from the world's major name authority files. Ralph will talk both about the data and how you can use the API to access it. Special guests Joe Atzberger and Bobbi Fox will talk about their experience working with the VIAF API on a Developer House group project. They'll show us the autocomplete widget the group created and take us on a code walkthrough. We'll include some practical use cases and leave plenty of time for QA in this one hour API Workshop. [CODE4LIB] OCLC WorldCat Registry API Workshop April 18th
The OCLC Developer Network is offering a free webinar, WorldCat Registry API Workshophttp://oc.lc/maAWkY, on Friday, April 18 at 11am ET. This Workshop will specifically focus on the RDF Interfacehttp://oclc.org/content/developer/worldwide/en_us/develop/web-services/worldcat-registry/rdf-interface.html for the WorldCat Registry APIhttp://oclc.org/content/developer/worldwide/en_us/develop/web-services/worldcat-registry.html, which provides machine-readable access to descriptions for over 100,000 libraries and other organizations, including names, addresses and the services they offer. In addition to the features and use cases, we'll also include a gentle introduction to RDF and then demonstrate how the RDF Interface works with a code walkthrough of a practical application inspired by some of our work at Developer House. We'll also leave plenty of time for QA. Registration is now openhttp://oc.lc/b1U1yN. [CODE4LIB] OCLC Web Service Keys for APIs Workshop tomorrow
The OCLC Developer Network is offering a free webinar, Web Service Keys for APIshttp://oc.lc/5MsuH8 Tuesday, January 7 at 11am EST. We will provide an overview of our API key system and the principles and implementation of the digital signatures that anchor the OCLC Web Service Key (WSKeys) infrastructure. We will walk through a code example that demonstrates how individual requests to web services are digitally signed. We will also talk about where our WSKey infrastructure is heading in the future to allow users to sign in to OCLC services through an OAuth 2 implementation. Finally, we will provide sample code via Github that can be used in your own projects or act as a reference implementation for your own authentication code. In describing our implementation we will provide an overview of how we chose to deal with many of the issues surrounding API keys that were discussed in the recent code4lib thread The lie of the APIhttps://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=code4lib;76426957.1311. [CODE4LIB] Developer House Call
OCLC is seeking nominations for participants in a new, intensive multi-day event that brings coders together to put OCLC web services to work solving practical library problems for colleagues and users. Sponsored by the OCLC Developer Networkhttp://oc.lc/devnet, Developer House gathers a small group of library coders together, with support from OCLC technical staff, for five days of innovative development using OCLC Web services. The event, which runs from February 3rd - 7th in Dublin, Ohio, promises to immerse participants in high-intensity effort in a relaxed environment where we can get down to the business of meeting library needs through code...and having a lot of fun while we do it. Developer Househttp://oc.lc/C87gzw is envisioned as an event longer than a hackathon, where we can carve out time and space away from competing priorities and really sink our teeth into something together with colleagues. The group will begin its work in the Developer House living room, where they'll decide which ideas to tackle, and then work alongside OCLC technical experts, who will also provide hands on support tailored to the group's interests. The only pre-defined outcome for Developer House is time devoted to solving problems for libraries and sharpening coding skills. Solutions can be anything from applications to tutorials to code libraries-anything that supports libraries with code and uses OCLC Web services is fair game - and will be shared with the Developer Network community. Whether you know someone awesome or want a seat on the sofa yourself, the OCLC Developer Network is now accepting nominations through Dec 13, 2013. Self-nominations are encouraged. You don't have to be an expert coder to participate -- we're looking for creative thinkers and effective problem solvers with a mix of skills to make a cohesive group. Some demonstrated familiarity with APIs and OCLC Web services will be considered beneficial. OCLC will provide for lodging and meals, with an additional travel stipend of US$ 250 for each attendee.
