ALCTS Role of the Professional Librarian in Technical Services Interest Group
at ALA Annual 2015

ALCTS Role of the Professional Librarian in Technical Services (RPLTS) Interest
Group
Saturday, June 27, 2015, 10:30 am – 11:30 am
Location: Moscone Convention Center 124 (N)
Add this event to your 2015 Annual schedule: http://alaac15.ala.org/node/29220

Please join the Role of the Professional Librarian in Technical Services
Interest Group as we explore the challenges and opportunities of advancing to a
higher administrative level in academic libraries. Have you ever wondered if
you should make this move? Have you considered what it would take to reach
that higher level? How can you be sure you’re on the right path? Three recently
appointed administrators will discuss their move from department head to upper
library administration. They will share the lessons learned from the search
process and how they handled the inevitable transition issues. The panelists
represent three viewpoints: Pixey Mosley made the move as an internal
candidate; Paula Sullenger spent many years at one institution before becoming
an administrator elsewhere, and Carmelita Pickett rose in responsibility at
multiple institutions. The panelists will have advice and encouragement for
your situation.

Speakers:

Pixey Mosley
Associate Dean for Administrative and Faculty Services
Texas AM University Libraries

Paula Sullenger
Associate Dean for Information Resources
Texas AM University Libraries

Carmelita Pickett
Associate University Librarian

Do you work with Islandora as one of your open source applications for digital
collections and metadata? Do you create MODS XML forms? Do you have ideas about
taxonomies, the autocomplete function, and forms? Have you thought how cool it
would be to be able to do authority control in the form? Should there be a more
standard approach to metadata in the Islandora community? Would you like to
create a working group or an interest group for the Islandora Community? The
Islandora Roadmap committee is interested in hearing from you!

Please fill out this short questionnaire: http://goo.gl/forms/XuOQzg3v76

If we have enough people, we can create a working or interest group focused on
metadata.

Thanks for your interest

ALCTS Role for the Professional Librarian in Technical Services (RPLTS)
Interest Group at ALA Midwinter 2015
When: Saturday, January 31, 2015, 10:30-11:30am
Location: McCormick Place West W187a
Old Habits Die Hard: Changing the roles in Technical Services in a Small
Academic Library
Anne LePage, Technical Services Librarian, Mount Allison University Libraries
Archives
In 2014 and 2015, Mount Allison University Libraries Archives will lose 5
technical services staff due to retirements and staff cuts. It is unlikely that
the library will be able to refill all positions. As a result, a new Technical
Services position has been created that focuses on cross-trained skills to
support in the library - cataloguing, acquisitions, access services, etc. The
focus will be on cataloguing skills to help support new initiatives and
enhanced workflows, especially for our current Technical Services staff that
need this skill set. This presentation will provide a look at the new position
and focus on the training plan. We hope this model of cross-training will
enhance the skills of all library staff, new and old, and anticipate the areas
of further staff development in the future.

The Evolving Role of the Electronic Resources Librarian
Monica Moore, Electronic Resources Librarian, Hesburgh Libraries, University of
Notre Dame
As our collections become increasingly electronic, the acquisition and
discovery processes for our resources have become more and more complex. This
complexity is not always well understood by subject librarians, reference
librarians, or library administrators. In a sense, it is like a digital
divide among library faculty, which needs to be overcome if we are all to make
sound, strategic decisions on the direction of our collection, its impact on
our users, and its relevance to our institution. This presentation will
describe these challenges, but also include specific suggestions and ideas for
attendees to help them promote better communication with other librarians at
their respective institutions.

2014-12-24 Thread Jennifer Eustis
For those interested in a New England Code4Lib

The survey results are in! There were a total of 74 respondents who all want a
NEC4L 2015! 39% would prefer to have a NEC4L in April and 13% in March 2015.
32% want to stay in the Boston area while 16% prefer Western Mass. Everyone who
answered the survey wants an annual NEC4L and 59% would like the annual NEC4L
to move around New England.

These are great answers. And Thank you to everyone who responded. I have a
couple of potential hosts. Going forward, please check the NEC4L wiki
(http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/NEC4L) for updates on the upcoming
conference and details.

Happy Holidays
