This year, code4libMW is being hosted in Columbus, July 23rd and 24. Per usual, the conference is open to anyone to attend. We have space dedicated for 50-60 attendees (historically -- it looks like ~30-45 attend), but if there is a great deal of interest, we can probably find more space. An initial schedule is starting to come together, but as with all things C4L related -- I see the schedule as a guideline. At this point, I'm starting to reach out individually -- but if you are in the Midwest, planning to attend, and would like to present -- let me know know (or add it to the wiki http://wiki.code4lib.org/2015_Code4Lib_Midwest_Meeting -- we will try and find a home for as many sessions as possible. We'll also be doing a workshop the first day -- specifically focusing on aspects of text mining/visualizations. If you have questions -- let me know. --tr

We're looking forward to seeing you all at Code4Lib Midwest this July at Grand Valley State University. We're planning a great 2-day conference with talks and lightning talks by you, hackfest time with toys from our Makerspace, visits to local tech offices, and some great social time in our awesome town of Grand Rapids, Michigan. [CODE4LIB] Code4Lib Midwest 2013
*Code4Lib Midwest 2013 October 13-14 Pappajohn Business Building, University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa* Please join us Sunday, October 13, and Monday, October 14, in Iowa City for the Code4Lib Midwest 2013 conference! This informal conference will feature short lightning talks, longer presentations, workshops, and breakout discussion sessions covering technology in libraries, archives and museums in the Midwest. A preliminary schedule can be found on the Code4Lib Midwest wiki (http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest). * I’m not really a coder. Can I still come to Code4Lib Midwest?* Absolutely! Code4Lib events are always open to people who don’t think of themselves as coders but who want to learn more about using technology in libraries and cultural heritage institutions. Not all of the talks and breakout sessions will be about “code,” either. Topics like digital preservation, digital media, and metadata are totally fair game at Code4Lib. *How much does it cost? What are the logistics?* Nothing! Registration for Code4Lib Midwest is free. Just add your name to the list on the wiki (http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest), and you’re registered. If you don’t have a wiki account and don’t want to sign up for one, e-mail Shawn Averkamp (shawn-averk...@uiowa.edu) or Emily Shaw ( emily-f-s...@uiowa.edu) to be added to the list. A block of rooms has been reserved in the Sheraton Iowa City Hotel at $99 per night for Saturday and Sunday nights. More logistical information is available on the wiki. *How do I propose a talk/workshop/discussion?* Just add it to the wiki (http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest). We have room for up to 20 presentations (15-20 minutes each) and around 20 lightning talks (5 minutes each), so don’t be shy. We want to hear about what you’re doing. Hope to see you there! --The Code4Lib Midwest 2013 Planning Committee Emily Shaw, Shawn Averkamp, Becky Yoose, Julia Bauder, Wendy Robertson, and Matthew Butler
[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib Midwest planning
Hi all, University of Iowa Libraries is looking to host the Code4Lib Midwest meetup this year, and we could use your help selecting dates and gauging interest. In previous years, the Midwest meetup was held in late summer, and we're open to continuing that pattern, but we'd also like to offer late September or early October when we can show off our brand new Learning Commons. We also have no idea how many of you to expect, since this will be the first Midwest meeting west of the Mississippi. If you're interested in a Code4Lib Midwest this year, help us out by signing up on the wiki ( http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest_2013_planning) or by emailing me or Emily Shaw (emily-f-s...@uiowa.edu) directly. [CODE4LIB] Code4Lib MidWest: Parking lot
Hi All, For those who are driving directly to the MSU Libraries from your city, we posted a map (PDF) showing the parking lot for visitors [1]. It's basically located next to the MSU Spartan Stadium. This map was created when our back entrance (called the Red Cedar entrance) was being renovated, so the map shows a detour to the library. Ignore that detour mark and just go straight to the Red Cedar entrance after you cross the bridge. The parking fee will be covered by us if you park in that lot; we will give you the parking permit before you leave. Looking forward to see you all there! thanks, ranti. [CODE4LIB] code4lib "midwest" regional meeting
Below is a brief description of the Inaugural Code4Lib "Midwest" Regional Meeting, but for HTML layout goodness complete with a couple of pictures and a cheesy movie, see the blog posting and the temporary/hidden link. [1, 2] Inaugural Code4Lib "Midwest" Regional Meeting I believe the Inaugural Code4Lib "Midwest" Regional Meeting (June 11 & 12, 2010 at the University of Notre Dame) was a qualified success. About twenty-six people attended. (At least that was the number of people who went to lunch.) They came from Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois. Julia Bauder won the prize for coming the furthest distance away — Grinnell, Iowa. We began with Lightning Talks: * ePub files by Michael Kreyche * FRBR and MARC data by Kelly McGrath * Great Books by myself * jQuery and the OPAC by Ken Irwin * Notre Dame and the Big Ten by Michael Witt * Solr & Drupal by Rob Casson * Subject headings via a Web Service by Michael Kreyche * Taverna by Rick Johnson and Banu Lakshminarayanan * VUFind on a hard disk by Julia Bauder We dined in the University's South Dining Hall, and toured a bit of the campus on the way back taking in the "giant marble", the Architecture Library, and the Dome. In the afternoon we broke up into smaller groups and discussed things including institutional repositories, mobile devices & interfaces, ePub files, and FRBR. In the evening we enjoyed varieties of North Carolina barbecue, and then retreated to the campus bar (Legend's) for a few beers. I'm sorry to say the Code4Lib Challenge was not successful. Us hackers were either to engrossed to notice whether or not anybody came to the event, or nobody showed up to challenge us. Maybe next time. There were fewer participants on Day #2. We spent the time listening to Ken elaborate on the uses and benefits of jQuery. I hacked at something I'm calling "The Great Books Survey". The event was successful in that it provided plenty of opportunity to discuss shared problems and solutions. Personally, I learned I need to explore statistical correlations, regressions, multi-varient analysis, and principle component analysis to a greater degree. A good time was had by all, and it is quite possible the next "Midwest" Regional Meeting will be hosted by the good folks in Chicago. For more detail about Code4Lib "Midwest", see the wiki. If you are interested in participating in and/or planning for a Code4Lib "Midwest" regional meeting, then please subscribe to a newly formed Google Groups mailing list [1]. The tentatively scheduled Code4Lib "Midwest" regional meeting to take place the University of Notre Dame needs to be rescheduled because of space conflict. "There is not enough room at the inn." (Argg!) The purpose of the list is to foster communication about a "Midwest" meeting. When it could be held. Where it could be held. What exactly would happen at the event. Please feel free to sign up. See also, the wiki. Re: [CODE4LIB] Code4Lib Midwest? [news]
> Sorry, I had to miss the conf. call. Any news? Here's some Code4Lib "Midwest" news. Just less than a dozen of us chatted on the phone about about Code4Lib "Midwest" and most people seemed to think having a meeting here at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Indiana) was doable. The "midwest" is so large it is difficult to find a convenient location for everybody. While we were not able to decide exactly, we are thinking the event may start the afternoon of Thursday, May 20 and end Saturday, May 21 around noon. Activities may include Lightning Talks, a social event, a presentation to interested library and university employees, a Code4Lib Hackfest Challenge where University Libraries employees articulate a problem to be solved and code4libbers hack a solution during the meeting, and some "classes" on specific topics (such as WorldCat API's, linked data, or text mining). We might even have presentations to ourselves, and some of the suggested topics included OLE, XC, and ILS/DI. Financially, there would be no fees for this Meeting except for a person's meal and travel expenses. There are plenty of inexpensive places to stay overnight. Next steps? I will make an effort to outline a few possible programs lasting between 1 and 2 1/2 days, post them to the wiki, and call for a vote to see which one is the most feasible. We will go from there. -- Eric "Again, What Have I Gotten Myself Into!?" Morgan University of Notre Dame

I'm in Iowa and could see going as far as Chicago for a one day event. Indiana, Michigan and Ohio locations would most likely take me out of the mix. P.S. - Could stuff the Fender HM Strat and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe into the trunk for the trip. Excellent coding tools. I think maybe I started the chatter in IRC, but now it looks as if I should redefine my region. Being in KC, I don't see myself or other MO, KS driving to Ohio and back in a day or weekend. I could be wrong. Thoughts? Any interest in a Code4Lib-Big-12-ish? Kudos to Jonathan for running with this. I'm a drummer too, BTW...in the event of a C4L11 Battle of the Bands. +1 ELM, I'm happy to help coordinate in whatever way you need. Also, if we can find a drummer, we could do a blues trio (count me in on bass). While I'm not in the Midwest, I think that any of these type of one day, weekday, conferences are best done on a Monday or a Friday to allow for less time off of work. Sure there are some disadvantages if work wants to give you the travel days, but I could certainly sell 1 or 1.5 days off from work a lot easier then 2 or 3. I agree with this. I don't mind attending conferences on weekends, and if a conference is on a Monday or Friday, I can spend the one day of the weekend traveling and the other exploring the city where the conference is held. It's also a lot for convenient for with a working spouse (with a limited amount of vacation time available) and a 6 year old son. Of course, some trips ara a little more difficult to plan. Two weeks from tomorrow I'll be taking a business trip which will consist of three days of meetings, and five days devoted to travel. The trip will take me to Paris, Johannesburg, South Africa and a little town in Tanzania called Morogoro.

If you're going to host it at Notre Dame I would expect an agenda something like this (do it on Saturday, 9/11) 1. meet & greet (mid-morning) 2. Tailgate (noon) 3. Notre Dame Vs. Michigan (3:30) 4. presentation to library staff 5. hack session 6. go home Can you get us in to the game, Eric? I'd come. --Ray On Thu, Mar 4, 2010 at 10:38 AM, Eric Lease Morgan wrote: If we were to host something here at Notre Dame, then I imagine something like the following agenda possible starting in the mid-morning: 1. meet & greet 2. share demonstrations 3. eat lunch 4. give a presentation to library staff 5. have a hack session 6. socialize in the evening 7. go home the next day There are plenty of inexpensive hotels in South Bend because of all of our football games. -- Eric Lease Morgan University of Notre Dame (574) 631-8604 --

R-, I don't think there is any set agenda for these things. If the event took place in a big city where there were many people in the immediate area, then I imagine the event would be a day-only sort of thing. People would be able to come and go in one day. If the event took place in a more regional area, then travel time increases and so might the need for an over-night stay. If we were to host something here at Notre Dame, then I imagine something like the following agenda possible starting in the mid-morning: 1. meet & greet 2. share demonstrations 3. eat lunch 4. give a presentation to library staff 5. have a hack session 6. socialize in the evening 7. go home the next day There are plenty of inexpensive hotels in South Bend because of all of our football games. -- Eric Lease Morgan University of Notre Dame (574) 631-8604
