Long-time lurker, but thought I'd chime in and say I would be
interested in such a scholarship, if it were available. I have a bit
of video editing experience, and am interested in coming to the
conference in RI.

A Talis sponsored mug: Benefits everyone that attends the conference a
little

A Talis sponsored scholarship: Benefits only one person and if it's
like some of the previous scholarship excludes some from being eligible
to receive it.

A Talis sponsorship of audio/video support: Not only benefits attendees
but benefits those that can't attend the conference and can watch the
audio/video captures after the conference.

Seems to me that #3 is a clear winner.

That does seem like a win-win option. Especially given Kevin Clarke's
suggestion that a Talis acknowledgement could be included in the videos.

I like the idea. If giving out at the beginning of the conference, it
could also make the conference more green. Of course, in that case it
would probably need to be a travel mug instead of a regular mug.

So...

How about a Code4lib mug or similar beverage container. Subject to
the featuring of a simple Talis logo, we would be prepared to explore
the possibility of funding the production of a Code4lib 2009 mug for
every attendee, which could feature graphics such as the winning

Just a suggestion - what do folks think?

Giving out a travel mug at the conference, especially if the attendees
were informed of this at registration time (or at least before they
packed) would be a fantastic idea.

Wow really interesting question and one that makes sense given the
move towards developing a code4lib brand.

my opinion on the Talis offer: +1 on the basis of free_swag++

It raises the question though: Does code4lib want to develop a brand
and determine who and who can't have permission to use it? We need a
committee to deal with that don't we? ;-)

My opinion on the larger question would be no real brand in the sense
of trademarking anything... let anyone who wants to use code4lib use
it in any way they want (even to disparage the group or create false
associations (Hitler/Code4Lib 2012)). People who want to get a piece
of swag with the cobranding will and those who don't won't. I'm still
of the mind that there really isn't a code4lib entity that needs to
hire a PR firm to do reputation management.

A green travel mug, announced in advance, would be nice and would make
a great green statement.

By travel mug, I assume we mean with a lid and nonbreakable. (The
nonbreakable part is as much for Talis as for C4L... way back in another
job I once inherited boxes and boxes of ceramic mugs, which were fragile
as well as expensive to ship. Boo.)

Some SWAG companies are even selling SWAG made from recycled materials.
I'm a big believer in greening the SWAG... and though I love the
teeshirts, mine is only suitable for me as a nighty.

On the other hand, Talis may consider it money better spent to put a mug
with their logo into it into each participants hands, than a
scholarship. Certainly up to them how they spend their sponsorship
money, but since they're asking us...

For myself, all the logoified travel mugs, t-shirts, usb keys, etc. I
get clutter up my home until I finally get around to getting rid of
them. Why not use the upwards of $700 that (my estimate) this will
cost to sponsor another scholarship, or just to lower the cost of
attendance?

And there is an advertising opportunity for Talis in the latter.
Acknowledgement could be given that Talis funded the timely conversion
of the video (would probably hit more eyeballs than a mug too).
