Not only WSL is missing, also CMD. Anyway years ago I had a look and what I
tried didn't work. Lack of knowledge. I will try to look into it again. Maybe I
have more knowledge about it today. I don't know why the normal CMD was never
implemented into NetBeans.

Here is a plugin called JConsole
(http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/43202/jconsole-for-netbeans), where you can
add CMD and maybe WSL to NetBeans, but it has some bug. Here is the github
repo: https://github.com/fungl164/JConsole maybe it is a good start to look
into the code how he handled it and then we can adopt it.

Well, the source code is open. Probably all it would take is register some
NetBeans Filesystem support for WSL.

This issue is 4 years old, WSL2 is now a thing but NetBeans on WSL still isn't
working. I just tried to create a project under NetBeans 12 with sources
located on the {{\\wsl$\Ubuntu}} network share without success (NetBeans
hangs). I tried to create a project from a remote server but only FTP/STFP are
listed.

Don't tell me about cygwin/X server/VM dirty hacks, it is not an option : like
Roger Murtaugh, _I'm too old for this shit !_
Don't tell me about using Linux, because I do it at home, but my company IT has
a few good reasons to force me to work under Windows and I'm OK with it (won't
elaborate, it isn't the point).

Looking at Visual Studio Code, it has a nice *Remote WSL* feature (of course
it's baked by Microsoft!) so you can edit files seamlessly in the linux
subsystem and in the Windows one. Unfortunately VSCode is really bad at PHP and
Java editing whereas NetBeans is really strong at it (and my personal
preference!).

So I'll be glad if there is some enhancement on this subject (y)

But if you run Linux, you have the shell installed and NetBeans will figure
that out and use it. Atm we don't have any solution for native Windows users.
Only when I install cygwin. It would also be good if NetBeans can handle native
command line. I think I created a ticket for that. That would be enough. WSL is
also native and no emulation etc.

Well, you might just as well run native Linux and cage the required Windows
stuff in a VM. Life is usually much happier that way. As of now this seems to
be a big hack, I really doubt that we found someone who is willing/capable of
implement this.

I don't know but I don't think that this isn't possible, because it is a native
ubuntu. The wsl is part of the Windows Kernel, no cygwin or emulation or
whatever, with their own file system which is a folder in windows called lxss.
So Everything (or most of it) you can use the bash in windows for your work.

[~Cruiser],

I've been using Netbeans 8.2 on Windows 10 with Lxss (Ubuntu 14 and 16) for
some time without an issue. I primarily run npm, composer, git and other dev
tools using the lxss and just run netbeans in windows 10. I use sym links in
lxss like 'ln ls /mnt/c/Users//Projects/ ~/" to make it easier to bounce to my netbeans project directory.

I'm not saying this will work with everyone. In addition I think windows lets
you install any version of linux now so it's a complicated situation.

It would be nice to integrate these a bit better. However, I have gotten the
linux version of netbeans to run by installing Cygwin X as an X server.
