Agree with you..
My thought was, Don't want to delete existing branch as this is based on the
branch-2.7 which might be used for future reference.(Anyway stale branches will
be delete at one point of time but I want to keep at least this merged to trunk)
And I clone the only parent jira because I want to same subtasks/reference of
this jira (don't want to create all the subtasks again) can be used.

I will try to update the cloned jira description...If it's not make sense, let
me know your thoughts for proceeding further.

in the future it'll be easier for others to follow along if you

a) favor removing / renaming the old feature branch so you can use the original
jira for the feature branch
b) expressly make a jira that it is for feature branch tracking rather than
clone the original jira.

[~arp]  thanks for your comment.

As [~hemanthboyina] mentioned this is  developed on branch-2.7 so there are so
many conflicts with latest trunk.

Internally We resolved against branch-3.1 and deployed the cluster and tested
well ( attached the testcases sheet in HADOOP-17542 )

When we plan for upstream, we feel need to create branch and then go head.
(Somehow this was delayed, [~arp] thanks for pitching here and remind us.)

We are thinking the following approaches to merge to  the trunk.
 * Create new branch and reopen all the jira's and so that it can run all
patches against the trunk. Or
 * Create a single patch against trunk and run jenkins but this will loose
commit history which is might not good .

We thinking go with approach 1 . Let me know your thoughts/suggestions on this..

Hope this should be ok for you.. After your reply, we will create the branch
(jira)

While merging in the discuss thread we keep single patch for review.

thanks for the ping [~arp], sorry for the late response

Yes we have tried these changes , the subtasks under this Jira were written on
top of Branch-2.7.3, so we have manually rebased all these subtasks on top of
Trunk and deployed the cluster, but there is an issue while parsing IPV6
address in NetUtils#createSocketAddr . NetUtils#createSocketAddr is common Util
which parses IP address and creates an INetSocketAddress which is used all over
the Hadoop, So we have modified this Util to support IPv6 address

In HADOOP-17542 we have attached the test scenarios which we have verified on a
successful deployment of Hadoop with IPV6

Admittedly I haven't followed the patches, I just glanced at a few,  but I'd
like to toss out that URI is reasonably good at handling ipv6 addresses.
Anything trying to semi-intelligently split/join authorities by a colon as
problematic.  Upwards of a decade ago I made NetUtils.createSocketAddr parse
via URI, partially to handle ipv6.

Hey [~templedf]. Her is the latest I heard from Gary Helmling.
{quote}pushed up a cleaned up version of our branch with only the IPv6 patches
on top of 2.7.3 to github:
A full list of the commits applied in the branch is attached.
This is basically the same set of changes that we are currently running.
There are still some test issues to work out though. I've seen a number of
tests fail unless -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true is used.
{quote}
Attaching his change log too: [^hadoop_2.7.3_ipv6_commits.txt].
This was done for branch 2.7 back then. I don't know how much effort is needed
to port it to trunk.

Hope this helps

I don't think so, but you should start talking about it on the dev lists —and
get other people to play with too. I think getting it into trunk would be the
target.

Given how many Hadoop problems arise from oddly configured networks, I expect
IPv6 networks out there to be differently quirky, and various problems
inevitably going to arise. A key concern of mine is more straightforward: that
this doesn't break IPv4. If everyone is in confident about that and that IPv6
works in their well-managed networks, then that's the best that can be done
before merging it in and shipping it in an "experimental" category. I expect
full IPv6 support will end up being something which has to trickle down,
app-by-app. Hadoop has to change first though.

What is important is that keeping the branch out of trunk is guaranteed to not
find any problems, instead just keep a branch which will slowly decay, and
block downstream apps from attempting to add IPv6 support

Allen Wittenauer commented on HADOOP-11890:
---

After starting work on HADOOP-13365, it's become very clear that the way we set
the default for HADOOP_OPTS makes life significantly harder to do fancier
things. Given this branch's intended purpose and it's relationship with the
HADOOP_OPTS default, it's a great time to actually fix it prior to 3.x stable.

So I'd like to throw this out there:

* We completely remove the default setting for HADOOP_OPTS out of
hadoop_bootstrap (Sidenote: hadoop-env.sh hasn't been read yet, so users can't
set HADOOP_ALLOW_IPV6 in there to prevent that code from getting activated
anyway...)
* in hadoop_init (which will get called after hadoop-env.sh, .hadooprc, etc
etc), if HADOOP_ALLOW_IPV6 = false, we hadoop_add_param the
-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true back in (use a key of java.net.preferIPv4Stack)
* change the description for HADOOP_OPTS in hadoop-env.sh (and anywhere else?)
to basically say that the default is empty. Remove the text about ipv6 from
both examples.
* Write the docs for HADOOP_ALLOW_IPV6 that basically says that if set to false
(the default... so that should get set in hadoop_bootstrap) it will attempt to
block ipv6, including trying to add -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true to
HADOOP_OPTS. (We say try because hadoop_add_param may fail if the key used is
already present.)

Thoughts?

This had gone quiet... I didn't know its current status. If you think it is
ready to be merged in then
start a discussion on the dev list and then we can do a vote on it.

I think a key concern is not so much IPv6 as what id does for IPv4.

Should we start a merge vote on this? Or what's needed before the community
would feel comfortable with the merge?

Facebook is running this in production and on test clusters. We have tested MR,
HDFS, and HBase extensively on IPv6 clusters, and ipv4 clusters.

Good work, guys.

We usually make the specific things we're doing on a branch into subtasks... do
you mind if I move HADOOP-11582, HADOOP-11990, HDFS-8078, etc. as subtasks
rather than separate JIRAs?

Great. I moved the "related" jiras to be subtasks.

Can you post a little bit more about what admins will have to do to use ipv6 on
their cluster when this branch is done? Maybe some kind of design doc?

Reading through HADOOP-12122, it sounds like the goal is that if an admin sets
{{HADOOP_ALLOW_IPV6}} and then starts using ipv6 addresses in configuration XML
files, everything will Just Work? Does setting {{HADOOP_ALLOW_IPV6}} also
imply that we will prefer ipv6 addresses internally when resolving hostnames to
IP addresses in the software? Or will the software continue to resolve
hostnames to a mix of ipv4 and ipv6 addresses?

If an admin configures ipv6 addresses in configuration XML files but does not
set {{HADOOP_ALLOW_IPV6}}, what kind of error message do we display?

Are we going to introduce some utility functions to parse ipv6 addresses and
ports?

One thing to keep in mind for this work is that for some people, DNS resolution
is really slow. I have had patches -1ed in the past for introducing extra DNS
resolution steps. We need to be careful not to introduce unnecessary DNS
resolution calls (and no, we can't assume everyone caches DNS lookups forever,
even though many people do).

Sounds great. Can you send a quick email to common-...@hadoop.apache.org
describing the branch and its goals? Then I'll create it in git.

The only other bureaucracy we have to do is setting up branch committers for
the branch. Let me know who you would like as branch committers (I'm guessing
you and Nate, but let me know if you'd like anyone else). I will propose on
the private Hadoop list (sorry, this list is PMC-only) and after a week you
guys will have commit access (assuming nobody votes against, but that would be
silly). Branch committers are just like regular committers except they can
only commit to that specific branch.

I think Hadoop needs ipv6 and it's great to see you guys getting more involved
with the community. Sorry about all the delays up to this point.

So [~nkedel] and I were talking and it seems like there is going to be enough
follow on work that a feature branch could be worth it. Seems like [~cmccabe]
was also in favor of that, so should we start work on that?
