I'm thinking of ipod touch (the jailbreaked one) for GTD and PDA. I'm
using mac as my primary computer and ipod touch seems to be a nice
companion to my MacBook :) Although I would wait until February when
the SDK for it appears if I was you.

I bought a Nokia N810 - the software is still kinda beta in some ways and a
lot of apps haven't made it over. o-hand's 'Contacts' is what I am waiting
for most. Haven't tried to sync anything yet - only imported vCards, so I
can't really comment on that. It is a nice little bit of gear though.

I'm still potentially in the market for a neo too, provided the 850 MHz
band issue gets sorted, but 3G would be really nice (I know it won't happen
this round, no flames necessary). I may choose freedom (mostly) on my
tablet with higher-speed bandwidth on a non-free phone.

I need a PDA that will work as reliably as possble, have a few options

 Phone not essential.

I don't need it to be open, non-evil, etc. I just need it's
shortcomings to be outweighed by the ease of backup and sync it has
over a Hipster PDA (Notebook and Pen).

Nokia N800 or N810?

Both are Linux PDA web tablet like devices, running linux, (and I
think GTK), so depending on your view of Nokia, they are fairly open and
non-evil. They don't have a Cellular interface though, so the only way
they can be used for phone calls is via Skype or another VoIP service
when you are near a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The N810, which was announced recently and may not be available yet, has
a slide out keyboard and a GPS, otherwise it is similar to the N800.

They are remarkably small, more like a large smartphone than a PDA.

I work for Nokia, (but not in device development) BTW, so you may wish
to take my views with some salt.

im not sure one can call the N8x0 series for PDA's. sure one can install GPE
apps to get calendar and that stuff, but it does not come pr default. also,
sync isnt exactly a simple issue...

ok, so another option is the recent open beta garnetvm from access, that
allows one to run palmos related software on the devices. but as said, its
beta, and as of right now i dont think it makes anywhere close to full use of
the screen...

Any recent Windows Mobile PDA then.

Sorry to say that but after playing with few LinuxPDA environments I would
move to Windows Mobile PDA if will have to buy one.

Fortunaltely, there is no need to do such a strange move for a
MacLinux addict...

There is the Sharp Zaurus which is amongst the best PDAs out there.
It simply works for daily useage (software is stable!), has a QWERY
keyboard, a twistable full VGA display (like the OpenMoko) and allows
to install alternate ROMs with e.g. Angstrom, Debian, OpenBSD if you
don't like the original Sharp Linux.

It can be expanded by CF (WLAN, GPS, GPRS) and SD cards.

And for syncing with a Mac, there is ZMacSync http://www.dsitri.de/
wiki.php?page=ZMacSync

Man... I had all models of Sharp Zaurus palmtops in hands. Let see:

SL-5000/5500/5600 we will ignore as they have crappy screen
SL-6000 is too bulky
c700 has slow CPU and only 32M ram
c750/c760/c860/sl-7500 have nice video acceleration under Ångström but are
  available only from second hand
c1000/c3000/c3100/c3200 are faster and have USB Host functionality

But they all lack any wireless connectivity (which you can add via CF or
USB but it adds to size), each of available ones (c1000/3x00) is huge
compared to today palmtops. And it has so split community that getting
support starts to be hard.

Re: What to use while waiting of v2?

2007-12-16 Thread GoXbox Live
Lets not forget about all the htc devices sold under diffrents names.

We have most of the hardware working with linux, and alot of the devices are
suplied with wlan. We even have the modem working on some of them. All the
GUI (opie/gpe/gpephone/openmoko/Qtopia) runs well on them, and even the
phone works with Openmoko and Qtopia (also sms) on some of them.

Whats great about this is that they all are sold used at ebay, so you can
have a cheap device running both Wince and linux.

Here is an overview of our work with the htc devices:
http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HTC_2dPhones

The most supported devices is HTC Universal, Magician, Blueangel and Apache.

Not much. There are Bluetooth cards that do not even stick out and a
WLAN card add less than 1cm.

If I compare with e.g. an Acer n30 it is half as thick but has 90% of

There is IMHO only one community: www.oesf.org and there are still
enough users out there. And, there are tons of pages found by Google.

I still do not have seen any QWERTY PDA that is really better (the
N810 may be).
