 Hi,

With all the recent talk about FR problems I think its a good time to share my
 recent good experiences.

When the kernel with the WSOD fix went into testing I immediately installed a
clean image on a 2Gb SD card. I changed the boot params to remove the ro,
installed Raster's keyboard, I got rid of the default keyboard, switched to
the illume theme, changed the engine to the software_x, and imported my
 contacts.

I've been using it as a daily phone for a week now with no problems. No WSOD
(Yay!), no recamping issues, only one caller mentioned echo (their end was
loud, so I turned the vol down - sorted). Everything just worked. Sure, the
UI seems a bit slow, and answering calls can take a bit of guessing as to
when the audio paths are setup, but I'm really happy with it. I get about 60
hours before the battery icon starts to go red, which is not a huge amount,
but easily enough to work with.

Now I have a phone with a notepad, an ebook reader, a PDF reader, and a GPS.
This means I can always take notes, refer to manuals and locate new sites.
Since I work for a systems integration company this is great stuff - its like
having a toolkit and reference set in my pocket. Oh yeah - it is also a
 phone :-)

 Have fun,

 Greg.

Re: [FSO] M4.1 issues (GPS, Suspend)

2008-12-13 Thread Michael 'Mickey' Lauer
Hi Olivier,

  - It looks like the only way to go into suspend is to press the power
button shortly. That's ok for me, but Illume's config is still stating
suspend happens just after blanking, which itself occurs after 30s of
idling. But since I prefer to chose when I suspend, I won't complain
 (it's just a little odd).

Yes, integration with illume -- or X and a window manager in general is not
perfect yet.

What's worse is that sometimes, after a
while, it gets unable to go to sleep. I can press the power button ten
 times, it still stays on.

Yes, I have seen this, but not been able to reproduce with meaningful logs. I
would appreciate creating an FSO ticket w/ debug logs.

I'm completely in love with the cli-framework
command. I mean, this is exactly the reason why I hopped on the
OpenMoko wagon. I can tweak, explore, experiment, and I like that.

Glad to hear that, this is why we did that way.

problem is, GPS subsystem doesn't seem to work at all (either through
Zhone, Tango or cli-framework). I launch cli, Request GPS resource
(which took less than 10 secondes). And then, I can wait forever, I
can't see a single satellite (through GetSatellites()).

You have run 'mdbus -s -l' in another shell? cli-framework is not able to show
you the async. signals.

Re: case manufacturing

2008-12-13 Thread Tobias Kündig
I made a case mockup a little while ago. But I never had time to create a 3D
model.

I came across a few problems while I designed the case:

   - The Freerunner doesn't have any buttons on its front. In addition to
that, the borders left and right from the display are pretty large (around
0.8 cm/0.315 inch). Everytime I looked at my mockup, I thought it's looking
some kind of strange. It's really hard to get a good design if you only have
   a display and nothing more.
   - Another problem that was resulted by the one above was that every
mockup I made looked either like the iPhone or a LG Prada (or like all the
other mobiles with a touchscreen). These days nearly every touchscreen phone
   looks the same!
   - The last problem I came across was the thickness. Even if the bevels
around the display are removed (that makes about 3mm/0.12inch less), the
phone is still very thick. But I don't think there is a way to get it
   smaller...

Have a look at the mockup here: http://www.opkg.org/images/case_mockup.jpg

It would be really cool if someone could create a new case. I never liked
the original one, and something more stylish would be great.

Tobias

Newer Navit [was: geocaching with tangoGPS on FR]

2008-12-13 Thread KaZeR
Hi Treviño, and thanks for your feedback

Marco Trevisan (Treviño) a écrit :
I've to say that the newer package you made is really faster when
loading my maps on launch, also if it doesn't seem to include the fix
posted months ago here (to redraw the map only after each drag as
 TangoGPS does)
In fact it does (since rev 1569), but it's not enabled by default.
Try adding drag_bitmap=1 to the navit tag (like recent_dest).
I agree that it should get more advertising, because it's a very useful
patch (thanks again Florian for that).
It's not enabled by default because it's not yet supported by every
graphics drivers (e.g. : on wince).
I'll add a comment in the xml file for that, and we'll probably enable
it by default on the opkg build.
and it doesn't include a wrapper script with:
  echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_memory

Yes, indeed. i ran into the same issue, and without it you can't load
streets files.
Finally I've seen this screenshot [1] in scap, is this an EFL
implementation of Navit? It seems to use the enlightenment toolkit both
for the buttons and for the map rendering (better than the GPS from what
I can see there). Have you some informations about this shot? :P

Yes, it's a work in progress by 'quickdev'. But there is still a lot of
work to be done :)
Anyway thanks for the work done in Navit, it's really a great project!

Thank you!

I'll have a deeper look at the other points of your mail.

amount of error as usual, but at one point this happens:

 Starting at daemon atd.
 splash-write: appplet not found
 Segmentation fault

Then, the screen is deleted and you only see a text cursor
 flashing,
like it was loading a graphical server. From time to time, it
 seems it
try to bring some screen, but fails (I think I cannot explain
 better).

Net is initialized, so I can ssh into my phone, but I don't
 know what to
do. I have no found sytem logs, nor graphical server log, nor
 anyother
 useful log.

I have looked in the list, but no one seems to have the same
 problem.

 Any advice?

(It was important that I had my phone usable today T_T).

 Thank you!

[FSO unstable] - qtopia-x11 not installable

2008-12-13 Thread Linus Gasser
Hi list,

after having made the round of all distributions (I'm another one who
has a Freerunner gathering dust), I thought I'd try the unstable FSO,
just for the sake of it.

Well, there is no graphic at first, so ssh into it, adding
/etc/opkg/unstable.conf with

rc/gz unstable-all http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/unstable/all
src/gz unstable-arm http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/unstable/armv4t
src/gz unstable-neo
http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/unstable/neo1973
src/gz unstable-gta02
http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/unstable/om-gta02

opkg update
opkg upgrade
opkg install qtopia-x11

And it spits out an error that it can't find libxi6... Obviously, as
it's not in the repository! How do I get that library? It's in testing,
but not in unstable - why? What did I miss?

Thanks in advance for any hint,

Linus

PS: now trying testing...

My questions regard your Glamo 3362 chip that is used in my new phone
 - Neo Freerunner. I'm wondering on the constraints that you have set
on the documentation concerning this chip. As you probably know,
Openmoko is all about freedom, both in software and hardware. This has
managed the company to draw a considerable community around it, many
members of it quite skilled in both software and hardware development.
I'm not kidding myself with hoping you to make your hardware
completely open but I would really care for letting the community
have access to the documentation. As I've understood, your
documentation is only available under heavy NDA and can thus only be
accessed by Openmoko employees. For that reason the potential of your
hardware remains largely unused. There are many new ideas that could
be made work on the chip and quite a lot of problems that could
easily be engineered around if we only had the means to.
Unfortunately this is too big of a job for the Openmoko team to do by
themselves (which is probably why they decided to abandon the Glamo
chip for the next version of Freerunner - GTA03). This is why I ask
if there is a possibility the Glamo documentation will be released to
the public. What are the problems you expect following this potential
action? What are the reasons the documentation has been kept secret
 for the time being?

I would be most grateful if you could reply to these few questions and
consider my points for a minute. I'm sure respecting and trusting your
customers would open up a completely new market for your exellent
 hardware.

I hope to hear from you soon,

FreeRunner Happiness

2008-12-13 Thread Sargun Dhillon
Sorry if this double posted guys. I was having issues with Gmail.

Well, usually companies like these have huge firewalls before you
hit someone with a respectable IQ. Though, their phones are slightly
more vulnerable. So, who is up to calling them? If I had some amount
of donations, I would be willing to create two 800 numbers that
redirect to the two known smediatech numbers.
The rates would be $0.0415/minute.

Additionally snail mail is useful, because it creates a pain in the
ass for whoever is filtering the mail. I don't know if there is a
Taiwainese equivalent of the BBB, but if there is, please chime in.

Other ideas:
-Google bomb the name Smediatech to something nasty [like a page
about how smedia sucks]
-Just a general web page about smedia's suckage.

Remember guys, stay legal.
