 just do this:

1 512mb ext3 partition with qtopia (0808 release from qtopia.net)

ones now, and recognized as mmcblk0p5 and mmcblk0p6 instead of
mmcblk0p2 and mmcblk0p3 before -can I change that ?-, so I had to
change uboot menu...)

My installs still work ok, except that when the phone suspends, I
cannot resume at all.

nope. the logicla partitions are inside the extended partition -- numbers
have to be bigger than the number of the extended partition.
if you like partition number independent identifiers use labels -- either

 recreate partitiontables.
 i think parted is one.

after recovery backup your bootsector by doing

 dd if=/dev/mmcbl0 of=boot.backup bs=512 count=1

in case you loose it again, do

 dd if=boot.backup of=/dev/mmcblk0

that's on your host! i don't know, if that works from fr, though.

opkg is now using repositories on buildhost.
Will it then be pointing to 2008.8 repositories (with stable-testing-...) ?
Or will it have its own repositories ?
Or... both common repositories with 2008.8 and specific ones ?

About current release, except that now Qtopia 2008.8 installs some of
its qtopia package into /opt/qtopia, are 2008.8 repositories safe for
Qtopia distro ? (I would say no, but not sure...)

It would be more practical if a rootfs package was downloadable

ok, now update binary released on qtopia.net alows updating without
using whole jffs2
Though maybe if there is a next version synced with 2008.8, rootfs
will need a global update, not via opkg ?
(or the coming Qtopia 4.4 will need such a rootfs manual update ?)

Since the last update (08/08), well... I can't really tell about sms

Just that I lastly experienced a bit more provider switching (because

Re: Qtopia issues with 4.3.2-080808

2008-08-14 Thread Cédric Berger
2 differences I noted with 080808 release :

- WIFI :
It was annoted improved wifi handling... well I never managed to
connect to WPA encrypted wifi, so not much experience... but it became
even more difficult to configure for me :

I have difficulties to access properties... menu to configure.
It seems to be keeping trying to access unavailable or encrypted
network (failing), and does not offer to access properties (only WLAN
detection...).
Just selecting the network service (Wireless LAN) triggers an
attempt to connect ? So how to get to configuration without it trying
to connect (and blocking) ?

I may fail to understand the real logic of these screen, but anyway it
is not really intuitive.

- lock/supsend :
Back from suspend (via power button), if screen was locked, it is
automatically unlocked (was not the case before). Is it a feature or a
bug ?
And often, power button press to get back from suspend is also at the
same time interpreted to get to shutdown menu. (but it also happened
with previous version... and even if screen kept locked)

(humm no, that is not me sleeping, juste the phone !)
So for these very basic tasks Qtopia works not too bad for me :

* Just tried, and sms do wake up immediately my phone, prompt me if I
want to read the sms and if I choose Yes I can read it.

* Lock screen issue :
If my screen is locked before suspend, it keeps locked on wake by sms.
I had to unlock before choosing Yes to read sms - perfect since it
might have wake up in my pocket for exemple.
There is a problem if it goes into suspend while not locked - in this
case sms wakes the phone unlocked !
That's why it would be better if the lock screen was automatically
activated before suspend.

* I have never seen the phone waking up from suspend for other causes
than power button, gsm call, or sms (such as GSM cell registration).
(and I have 40 km travel each day, sometimes even roaming).
I also tried to check yesterday that it was not, ie. waked up with
just dimmed screen : even always tapping on the screen during the
travel, it kept on suspend.
I wonder what is done differently form 2007.2 or 2008.8 distro where
it so often wakes up ? Does FSO work correctly ?

How about the mediaplayer, GPS, WiFi and webbrowser?

* mediaplayer, I did not use it much yet... just tried 2 mp3... one
didn't read (but was a bit special... I took what I had at the
moment) though it is read by 2007.2 mediaplayer.
The other worked fine. Playing with sound volume during call works but
is not so intuitive (should be very easy for such an important feature
for a sound player)

* Wifi : not much success. There is a configuration application quite
complete but it still need a little polish. WPA access did not work,
and I think DNS config via DHCP (when on unencrypted wifi) didn't
either, but since WPA was not ok, I did not test much.
So encryption support needs to be activated/configured. But
configuration app already is ready for it.

* Bluetooth works, was able to pair with devices and also send/receive
files (pictures...) with no trouble.

 * Webbrowser : no app available either :-(

 * Application packages can easily be installed via a feed (but very
few apps available). (There is a GUI manager for this)

 * Messages / calendar is not too bad, and rather complete.
Configurable for IMAP / POP, (but for now I miss gmail synchro
since encryption is not correctly handled).
I would like an easy way to synchronize to gcalendar too... (I think I
could manually import a Vcal entry -not sure-, but I need simple
online synchro)
I also miss MMS but it is because of WAP stack missing for neo...
qtopia appli is ready for it.

I hope coming version 4.4 will bring improvements. Should allow to
have browser and GPS apps...

** What I appreciate a lot is that there is GUI apps for configuration
of all of this (even if all is not working well yet) : bluetooth,
wifi, gsm network (properties / selection / prefered), ...
(I would have like 2008.8 start with complete Qtopia -but on X11-, and
only when available / user chosen, switch some parts to other applis).
Also for ex. home page wallpaper can be very easily chosen via config
application. And it looks nice (even more since it is now a picture of
my daughter !).

Unlikely. Qtopia is compiled by Trolltech, no idea how they create it, but it
was there long before FSO. Probably both using OpenEmbedded, that's where the

Those waiting this release to switch to ASU (not totally mature enough

GTK in Qtopia

Hi,

Is there a way to run a GTK application under Qtopia ?

Some kind of GTK-Qt bridge... a way for GTK to write to Qtopia
framebuffer instead of X
... or X writes to framebuffer ?
... or whole screen control switches from framebuffer to X while this app runs ?

I think I have seen somewhere a solution via server X - VNC -
KeyPeeble (vnc client under qtopia)... is that doable ?

I realize such a solution will probably not perform ideally (speed,
memory,... ?).
But even if not ideal, this could be really great to be able to launch
any given app. (just maybe not your every day apps)

And it may even not be as bad as on your desktop when you launch
another whole OS in a virtual machine... and still it can be very
useful !

It is not invisible, but quite ok.

Difference in aspect is that it looks less smooth/glossy/slick. (I'm
french... I just try not to use too wrong words to describe :-) )
And it also has more grip... slipping finger or stylus is less easy.
(a bit like if you try to do it on a rubber eraser)
Though it gets better after it has completely dried... but hard to
compare since I got used to it... (I need another freerunner !)

Oh... something else I noticed : with it, do not use anymore a
ballpoint pen ! Ink will stay on the invisible shield. So take care
with the multifunction stylus.
I could wash out the ink by getting it a little wet and sweeping, but
I do not know if it would have been more difficult if I had waited
longer and it would have dried more...

Re: Has anyone tried the invisibleSHIELD on the freerunner?

2008-07-23 Thread Cédric Berger
It is quite exactly the visible size of the screen. Very slightly smaller.

It is easy to apply : spray it, apply and adjust (it slips), get
bubbles away with the tool from the invisible shield pack and let
dry...

I sprayed quite a lot (too much ?), and water (well the solution in
the spray) is then wiped out to the edges. Take it away before it gets
into the body and the electronic components.

I think I have some really little bubbles at one point (I would need a
magnifier to check...). But I really didn't struggle when applying.
Manual indicates some micro bubble should go away after 2-3 days.

What took me the more time is cleaning my screen before applying.
Didn't want to protect dirt and smudges.

I checked before but I do not remember exactly... for something less
than about 20$ (€ ?) there should not be custom taxes from the US.

There still is VAT that should be payed but how to do it... and for only 7$...

Anyway (till now) I had nothing more to pay. Custom might one day
write me a bill to ask for the VAT. In this case I just hope I would
have nothing more to pay (processing fee...).

And I think the package was mailed from UK... so maybe even different
rules (well even less to care for custom taxes I guess)

(I payed via Paypal since my VISA credit card was refused on the order page)

Re: [Qtopia] roaming - manual selection not working

I confirm also that if from the UI I try to select a network from
available gsm networks, it asks me if I want to switch to manual and
fails :

log shows a failed :
AT+COPS=1,2,20810
But manually I was able to do it by :
AT+COPS=1,2,20810

= looks like the quotes where missing in command issued by Qtopia
(if I omit them I have the same error message)

And still there is the error when directly selecting the Change Mode
in menu, from Automatic to Manual :
AT+COPS=1,2,0fails

=provider number is missing (20810)(or is 0 meaningful for
current provider? if so maybe it is only the quotes missing...)

maybe there will be several directions in parallel)
(I mean not only for the OS and base applis, but also for applications
one would want to develop)

It is not so bad that it is clear for everyone what the strengths and
specifics of each choices are.

And even if it is not a new problematic, not everyone is fully aware
of it. And when comes the time to decide to investigate/develop on one
architecture, it is good to fully understand what they imply. Better
than only deciding on, say, the look of existing applications.

Sound quality during calls is indeed not that good.

1. Volume is usually too low, but I think it can be modified via
correct settings.
Seems like people not always hear me at the same level : sometimes
quite ok, often really too low. I have yet to try more...

2. There also is this annoying noise (sounds like interferences), that
both caller and callee can here.
But what I found very interesting is that sometimes, for a few
seconds, it suddenly totally went away !!
I could talk and hear without this noise, but not for long.

It happened more than once, at different locations. I was not moving,
not near identified sources of perturbation, not running special
background applications, not connected via wifi nor bluetooth (it was
disabled via gui didn't check if it was really off). The person I
called, as far as I can tell didn't do anything special either (was
also not moving).

This was tested with Qtopia (not ASU). (booted from SD)

And I am not a linux expert so it usually takes time when I use the
command line...

I keep testing
resume after suspend seems to work better now. Whole screen come back
with strange color noise but it gets ok once all parts of the screen
gets drawn again.

yes, wpa does not work because the system is broken in that regards.

I will look at the script to ensure wpa gets killed if it does not work.

Re: [qtopia on freerunner] - What files do I have to download?

2008-07-13 Thread Cédric Berger
Thanks a lot, I really missed that 2 points...

now I could get it boot the last Qtopia image (extracted from the
jffs2) from the microSD

I can start some testing ! :-)

First boot was ok, pin unlocked, gsm network ok, first sight ok
No sound... but I've read there was something to do to correct... so
should be fine

It seems you have to use ext3 for the rootfs partition, because current
kernel builds have ext2 support only as a module (which is not yet
available before the rootfs is mounted).

Then I had the following problem: U-Boot told the kernel that the rootfs
was ext2, even if it was ext3, so the kernel couldn't mount it. I solved
that by logging in to the U-Boot console via USB and modifying the
command sequence to boot from SD so that it looks like this (I just
 replaced ext2 with ext3):

 menu_1=Boot from microSD (FAT+ext3): setenv bootargs ${bootargs_base}
 rootfstype=ext3 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootdelay=5 ${mtdparts} ro; mmcinit;
 fatload mmc 1 0x3200 ${sd_image_name}; bootm 0x3200

Here you can also see that it expects the kernel to be on a FAT
partition (it uses the command fatload). Maybe that could be changed,
so that it reads the kernel from the ext2 or ext3 partition itself, but
 I don't know which commands U-Boot supports.

 HTH,
 Thomas

Re: [qtopia on freerunner] - What files do I have to download?

2008-07-12 Thread Cédric Berger
I would like to boot Qtopia from SD, but couldn't yet...

Can I do that with the image of Qtopia you mentioned ?
I extracted the files form the .jffs2 and copied them on the microSD card.
I then put the uImage bin in /boot

But trying to boot from the freerunner on SD I only get :
Unable to read uImage.bin from mmc 1:1
Booting image at 3200
Bad magic number

I tried with SD card formated in ext3 and ext2.

Was that a correct method ? What is wrong ?

ps. to extract from .jffs2 I used the method found here (I use ubuntu
8.04, 64 bit) :
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/modifyingrootimage/
Kernel Memory Emulating a MTD :
mknod /tmp/mtdblock0 b 31 0
modprobe mtdblock
modprobe mtdram total_size=65536 erase_size=256
modprobe jffs2
dd if=/pathtoimage/rootfs.jffs2 of=/tmp/mtdblock0
mkdir /media/jffs2
mount -t jffs2 /tmp/mtdblock0 /media/jffs2

Re: SanDisk micro SDHC 8GB card under testing

2008-07-10 Thread Cédric Berger
I'm interested too by your tests...

I think I will also buy a sandisk 8gb

Anyway, I would like to know if with a really fast card, the
bottleneck will be the neo, or if in all cases the faster the card,
the better the performances in the neo ?

What is the theoretical limit speed of SD interface in the neo ?...

I will buy it in Geneva, for 30€
http://www.prodimex.ch/pGroupe.aspx?ONG=MEMOIRESGRP=MICROSD+%2f+MINISD

There are 3 different references (sdhc, sdhc mobile ultra, sdhc
premier). I do not know the real performance difference beetween
them...
One is rated as class 4 (minimum 4 MB/s write speed) (well the shop
says class 2 but sandisk reference it as class 4),
The other (Premier) up to 10MB/sec read and 9MB/sec write
And no info for the Ultra...

Cool. If you have time, can you post some performance numbers for it?
 http://members.shaw.ca/mmontour/neo/iospeed is a simple performance-test
program that I wrote (source is iospeed.c in the same directory), or
you could use something standard like bonnie++.

Once we all have such data collected, google could probably offer to
publish it...
They already do so for their own car fleet :

Of course, not so many people are ready to publish such private data !!

About crazy ideas... the same thing could also be done for yourself...
monitoring heart rate, walk speed, cerebral activity,

One fun thing to do: send this data to a web server, and plot it (using
GPS) on a map showing your current consumption as a function of location?

InvisibleShield screen protectors

 I do :P

We could ask them to make one for the Freerunner.
Did you see this: http://tinyurl.com/6rmj5j :)

 Also:
 http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40_trksid=m37satitle=openmokocategory0=

Perfect ! I was just going to order an invisibleShield, choosing one
for a phone with similar size, (I was ready to cut it to adjust...)

But :
- is full body coverage made up from different parts (screen / body)
? I don't think it is possible to cover both with the same sheet (not
flat)

- is screen sheet a bit larger (or smaller), or exactly at the size of
the visible part of the screen ?
I thought I'd better put a sheet a bit larger on the naked LCD, by
first putting off the case of the Freerunner... with the added
advantage to have the sheet acting as a joint for dust/water drops...
(and that is also why I was not afraid to cut a sheet by myself...
rough edges would be hidden ! )

I've always bought accessories (generally USB cables) before than the

Looking for a good (1A-2A) usb car charger now! ;)

OK couldn't wait I also ordered one (screen only) at ZAGG.
So I also have 2 discount codes. If two of you are interested, just email me...

For the car charger I may first try to re-use old chargers from my
broken phones... should be ok at least for slow charge. Just have to
cut wires and also recycle an old mini-usb cable of mine...
