Yes, using a battery like that is discouraged. Basically for gta01 you
can use BL-5C or even better (more capacity) BL-6C but currently it

I presume you mean GTA01, right? My GTA02 has no trouble charging my BL-5C.

Really?

I bought BL-5C compatible battery month ago, and it can't be charged
with GTA02. I also remove BL-5C from Nokia phone, and GTA02 still can't
charge this battery.

And previous discussion tells that GTA02 can just charge battery with
Coulomb-counter.

Does this bug fixed?

Is there VoIP software avaliable for SHR, which doesn't need any

Solar backpack (Solar charger)

2009-05-21 Thread Daniel.Li
Dear All,

Solar backpack absorbs solar energy and turns it into electric energy
storing in storage battery. It can charge different specification mobile
phones through corresponding connectors.

I'm really interested in this. And I think solar backpack is much more
suitable for emergency situation when there is no electricity
outdoors. This product is easy to operate ,safe to use ,convenient to
take and fashionable.

Solar backpack is an ideal product for living and traveling. It's much
more convenient than solar charger, as I don't wanna hold solar charge
when I'm biking or mountain climbing :)

What do u think? Any idea or comment on this?

Well, I think it's much more useful than solar charger than you tested.
It's really not that convenient when I'm out (biking, mountain

as stated on the faq page, it's part of gpsd. you may or may not have
gpsd in your distro, as it's been supplanted by various parts of fso,
which claim to have full legacy support for gpsd. maybe try running
 fakegps.

if that doesn't work, which distro are you using?

I'm using openmoko-shr-image-glibc-ipk--20090427-om-gta02.rootfs.tar.gz

And I have found gpsfake on Jaunty in python2.6-gps package. But when I
run this command it says

$ gpsfake -b -c 0.1 -o -n -N -r r 20090302_180050.log
Processing 20090302_180050.log...fakegps: no sentences in test load.

And I'm sure that there is gps data in the file.
$ ls -l 20090302_180050.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 daniel daniel 56376 2009-03-03 02:16 20090302_180050.log

I think work means all functions can be used (remaining battery
indication, battery info display, anyway compatible with battery shipped

BL-5C can't display battery info/remaining battery and charge with FR.

Is there anyone familiar with the battery driver? I hope I can charge
the battery with FR and show some info on FR as possible as we can.

BL-5C Nokia battery information NA, why?

2009-05-15 Thread Daniel.Li
Dear All,

I installed Nokia BL-5C on FR, but there is no info in power setting, so
I don't know how much battery it's left.

When I plug usb cable to charge the battery, there is no + sign on
battery icon also.

Further more, I notice that when I boot FR, it shows battery driver
failed.

But I switch to battery provided by openmoko, made by Taiwan. It's OK.

BL-5C , I found this type on wiki page. I think current drive support
this battery, is that right?

 Hi!

Maybe the wiki is a bit disambiguous, but none of the replacement battery

That said, the battery in freerunner has a Coulomb counter, which is
 required by the freerunner.
All the other battery does not contain a coulumb counter (nokia bl-5c,
 6c, etc),
therefore freerunner CAN NOT charge it. And CANT display the remaining
 capacity.

That's sad.

The only way to use this batteries atm, is you charge the battery
EXTERNALLY (via an another nokia phone or external charger), then you
put into the freerunner and use it.
However you will not have any indication about the remaining capacity.

When I charge FR, it will be shutdown automatically.

So I have a question here, If I have charged battery with external
charger. Then I put it back to FR, will it shutdown automatically?

Cause I don't have external charge right now. Any one has the
experience, please let me know, thanks in advance.
If I understand correctly this is only a SOFTWARE LIMITATION.
That said, if somebody write a correct driver it can be charged this
type of batteries too. The problem with it, is the exact specification of
the battery is not available, and if you charge incorrectly it can even
 explode.

Ah.. Maybe I have take a took at spec. I'm on travel today. Seems it
can't work with the new battery. :(

So writing a correct driver requires many trial-and-error, and the possibility
to destroy the battery and the freerunner too.
Because you need to estimate how much you already charged the battery
(the coulomb counter says exactly how many charges it took), and the
remaining battery indicator would be just an approximation.
(like the 3-4 bar on the mobile phone)

Humm, seems reasonable, does the external charge the battery other way
than FR?

It is just a speculation, but imho writing this driver is not as
 difficult as it seems
at the first look. If somebody spy how the nokia phone charges its
 battery, we could replicate the
process. We should simply monitor the voltage and the current of the battery.
Needs some simple circuit(couple of wires and a soldering iron, and
 proper multimeter).
And based on this knowledge, somebody could create a driver.
It is not impossible after all.

However should take some precaution, because it can explode/or getting
 overheated,
 but not impossible.

Good news :)

And there are some economic sense. The nokia battery costs 6EUR here, while
 the
 freerunner's costs 25EUR plus postal service (30EUR).

Yeah, Cause right now I don't know what type I should buy.

I simply took back to the shop where I bought my battery. I buyed a
 car charger instead.;)

Quick way, I'll try is ASAP :)

 Correct me if Im wrong.

Thanks for all u info :)

I can assure you i tried it myself on GTA02v6 many times and on most
tries i could boot to NOR without battery. Probably it depends on how
fast host can enumerate the device but for me it was enough to hold
AUX, then plug USB, in case it didn't work hold AUX again, press
POWER... Something like that in most cases lead me to NOR boot menu
and there the battery can be charged.

Well, I think maybe u hw has fixed problem.

Make sure your battery never discharges completely.
This is an issue because the internal charging circuitry can not be
turned on until the FreeRunner has booted, and booting through USB power
alone does not work on early A5/6 devices.

This is a litle gtk python script that searches the geocaching.com site

This is version 0.4 and the code is still not pretty but quite usable.
The package can be found here http://www.opkg.org/package_141.html

Warning: I have only tested it on shr unstable

 The script can now:
 - get gps location from phone
 - user can manually set location
 - user can specify range
 - script can download matching geocaches and add as poi
 - read geocaching.com username and password from configuration file
 - threaded gtk and downloading - but unfortunately not searching
 - unicode support
 - gui input for username and password
 - user can specify whether he wants to download already found caches
or skip them and whether he wants to download just caches of a specific type
 - hints are downloaded and user can specify if hints will be
 displayed encoded or decoded
 - coordversion is added. It's a tool to convert coordinates in their
 different presentations (see below)

 Future plans:
 code commenting and sanitizing
 threaded search

 Coordversion:
You can convert coordinates from one presentation into the two others by
 entering the given coordinates into
the matching row and press the at the end of the line. The other
fields will be updated or the status field
 will display an error.
 The three presentations are:
 row - presentation - example
 -
 first row - decimal degree - 52.12346 013.98765
 second row - degree, decimal minutes - 52 7.4076 13 59.259
 third row - degree, minutes, decimal seconds - 52 7 24 11 179 15

You can add the coordinate you just converted as poi into tangogps.
Therefore you can specify a name (which will be the title of the poi)
and click on add as poi.
ATTENTION: It will always be added the point which is currently in the
 FIRST ROW (decimal degree field).

In the two fields below you can enter bearing values in degree and
kilometers. By clicking the button in the same row the program will
calculate the new coordinates to the given coordinates (again taken from
the first row) the angle and the distance and display them in the fields
below. From there you can move the new coordinates up again by clicking
^ to keep converting them into other presentations or add them as a poi.

 Example:
You are on a geocaching Trip and on one stage you get the coordinates 52
 30.87294, 013 21.003738 and are told to go 150 meters in 45°.
You would enter the coordinates into the second row and press the
button next to it to get the decimal degree presentation into the first
row (52.514549, 13.3500623). Then you would enter 45 and 0.15 in the
bearing fields and hit . The new coordinates are displayed below. By
pressing ^ you bring the new coordinates up again. Now you can, for
example, add a nice name like Stage 2 on my multi and press add as
poi. The new poi should now be visible in tangogps.

 Installation:
 install python-sqlite3 python-pygtk python-pygtk python-netclient
 python-mime
run mokogeocaching.py or use the mokogeocaching icon located in the
 launcher.

Mokogeocaching works best with tangogps 0.9.6 because of a bug in 0.9.5
where tangogps crashes if a poi i larger than 1500 charaters.

OSM mapping isn't complicated. You decide how much time you want to

 all
sorts of features like mailboxes, housenumbers, parks, parking
 lots...

That's great!

If drawing road lines becomes too much of a burden for you, just
 upload
the traces to osm and hope that someone else will use them for
 drawing.
A problem with this approach is that others won't know how the track
 was

 things like that.

Agree. Other can use these track just as reference. I hope I can upload
those tracks myself when I have more time. It's fun.

I believe it's what they call an urban canyon. When you have something
tall - usually a building - which reflects the GPS signals on one side of
you, you will appear to be in a different position than where you really
are. Whatch your HDOP values - it's the third of the slash separated values
shown by TangoGPS on the main screen. If it's as much as 4.5, the position
 shown can easily be 30 - 40 m off.

Thanks for the info. Very great to know more about GPS, not just track
where you have been, also how to use GPS accurately. :)

that wasn't an overly helpful link. yaouh is for updating tiles you
already have on your system. if there are no tiles there, it won't
update anything. it's more for osm, where the tiles change in some
areas by the day. in one area, google's rarely change in the space of

I think it's OK. well, mountain area :)

you need to select the google repository in 'config', then drag the
 map around to download tiles.

I didn't see any other repository in drop down list in yaouh. And I
didn't know where to find yaouh's config file.

So is there any manual to guide me though this? If there is, a link will
also do.

as noted though, if you abuse the
system, you will be black-listed although only for a limited time i
 believe.

Ah I just wanna download the area that I'll pass though during
travel.

i also hear a given ip is allowed to download a limited
number of tiles not through the api, before access is cut. the figure
i was quoted was 1000. ymmv

Is there any server that is for public service, providing service for

 Hi Daniel,

I use to use this kind of solar charger (a YB-E5008) during my last
holidays (3 weeks in Iceland, by bike), and i can tell you that they
are not suitable for smartphone. I couldn't keep my Nokia N95/8GB
 charged.
When they say that you can charge your solar charger with sun light
 in
8/12H, it means actually 8/12h exposed under the sun light at its
zenith, on the equator of the earth!
By experience, i can tell you that you will need _at least_ two sunny
days to get it charged properly (during which you took care of
orienting the charger as the sun moves).

Thanks for you info. And it's very useful. I found that YB-E5008 has
only 3.6V/1100mAH.
http://y-toshenzhentech.itm.com.cn/532951/solar-charge-yb-e5008-for-mobile-phone-mp34.htm

Well, I have to re-check it with factory before I buy one :)

You have to be aware of these constraints as well:
 - You can't charge your phone while you charge the charger itself

YL-S** series can charge your phone when the charger is charged with
solar energy board :)

 - If the charger is not fully charge (the light is not green), it
won't charge your phone, _at all_!

Humm, I have checked with factory. LED of YL-S** series only indicates
how much battery is left. And even it shows red, it can still charge the
FR.

70%-100%Green
30%-70% Orange
0%-30% red

Of course, I think we had better to test it. And I think you are right
the higher capacity the better :)

As well, i would advice to use a charger which has at least 2 times
the capacity of your phone (FR has a 3.7V/1200mAh battery).

On the 3 chargers you propose here, and the 3 chargers i've proposed
earlier, i would be only interested in 2 of them:, the SC019 and the
SC020, mainly because these are the only ones which has internal
 battery with a capacity = 3000Ah

Yeah, I have checked with them again. They have larger capacity
3.0/3.5/4.0Ah

But the price is a little bit higher. :)

 Regards,
 Chris

Some wind-up torches can charge mobile phones, I've emailed one place to see
if they can tell me what power theirs can output but no reply yet.

I think the theory might be the same.

solar board charge internal battery, and then battery charge phone.
crank output charge internal battery, and then battery charge phone.

The question is how much mAh crank output and how much time it take to
charge the internal battery. :)

qemu-native build fail

2009-05-03 Thread Daniel.Li
Dear List,

I have found that qemu-native failed with gcc 3.4, see below.
Originally, qemu failed with 4.* gcc, now qemu is ok with gcc3.4 but
qemu-native failed.

I googled, only found this http://pastebin.com/f75407ece# , which seems
failed on 20 Apr.

Now, I'm confused. Is there anyone can help me out this problem? I'm
build fso-gta02-testing-image, with Jaunty (ubuntu 9.04). Thanks.

qmenu build fail on Jaunty

2009-04-28 Thread Daniel.Li
Dear List,

I just upgrade my OS to Jaunty, and when I build
fso-gta02-testing-image. I met qmenu failed again.

I google web and only found
http://bugs.openembedded.net/show_bug.cgi?id=4814
It seems the problem has been discussed earlier. Is there any thing that
I have missed.

Thanks in advance.

The freedom universal keyboard from the same site was more promising.
English layout for the moment, but at least there are enough extra keys

Re: [SHR-testing] save SMS messages to text file?

I don't know about current status. But it seems impossible, if u are
using openmoko-message, see below

 Hi

I've succesfully flashed my GSM firmware with the provided uSD image
so now I'm able to use my FreeRunner as a phone.

My old phone has several SMS messages stored in it's internal memory
and allowed receiving messages to this memory even though the space on
the SIM for storing SMS messages is full.

Now off course only those messages on the SIM card are available on
the FreeRunner and the messages application immediately complained
that there is no space for new messages. Doesn't the FreeRunner allow
storing SMS messages other than on the SIM?

And in any case: is there a way to extract or backup SMS messages to
a clear text file? I couldn't find anyhting on the wiki about this.

Kernel git repository branch name understanding-- Help!

2009-03-28 Thread Daniel.Li
It seems that I have sent the wrong list, resend it again.

Dear List,

I have found that there are lots of branches in repository, see below:
  origin/HEAD
  origin/andy-tracking
  origin/andy-tracking-nohist
  origin/balaji-tracking
  origin/drm-tracking
  origin/master
  origin/master-nohist
  origin/mokopatches-tracking
  origin/mokopatches-tracking-nohist
  origin/pending-tracking
  origin/pending-tracking-nohist
  origin/proposed
  origin/stable
  origin/stable-tracking
  origin/stable-tracking-nohist

I always use andy-tracking branch, which is supposed to be the latest,
but he has left. Well, I'm quite confused which one is right for me
now.

Or maybe I have missed something, which is discussed earlier, if so, a
link is really appreciated.

Or can anyone help to let me know how to recognize those branches. From
the above branch names, I just can tell there might be personal/stable
branches. But I can't tell what's the version of kernel 2.6.24/2.6.29/
bla... bla...

So I have following questions on current branches:
a) What's kernel version in those branches 2.6.24/2.6.29/others...?

b) Which one is the main developing branch, where all personal branches
will be merged to by maintainer, might be someone from openmoko???

c) Current branch names and their classifications:
personal-tracking/developing/stable

My understanding of branches, but I don't have any idea about others:
Personal-tracking branches:
  origin/andy-tracking
  origin/andy-tracking-nohist
  origin/balaji-tracking
  origin/drm-tracking
stable branches:
  origin/stable
  origin/stable-tracking
  origin/stable-tracking-nohist

d)What's the difference between stable/stable-tracking/stable
tracking-nohist.

Note: Later stable tracking and stable-tracking-nohist (no commit
history)???!!!???!

Well, if I'm wrong, please correct me. As I just wanna keep an eye on
just 1~2 branches, suitable for me. Thanks in advance.

Well, I got, see below. It seems no version number.

# Makefile for the OpenMoko FSO development system
# Licensed under the GPL v2 or later

BITBAKE_VERSION = branches/bitbake-1.8

FSO_STABLE_MILESTONE = milestone5
FSO_STABLE_BRANCH = fso/${FSO_STABLE_MILESTONE}
FSO_STABLE_VERSION = fso/${FSO_STABLE_MILESTONE}

.PHONY: all
all: update build

using the default makefile from download site works well. haven't
tried the git version. I think you might try milestone5.1.

Do u mean wget http://downloads.freesmartphone.org/Makefile; to get the
makefile and run make fso-gta02-milestone5-image again?
