when using the built-in GPS antenna. Getting a 3D fix is taking over 20
minutes on average using the built-in GPS antenna. When using an
external GPS antenna, the issue goes away and an unaided GPS cold start
can be achieved in about 41 to 44 seconds.

I suspect that the use of unshielded cabling between the GTA02 is a
likely cause. Being in the Avionics business, I am familiar with the
use of shielded twisted pair wiring, but generally in large 22AWG (will
have to figure out where to source very thin STP cabling). The wires we
use to perform this mod is solid core, probably 30 AWG. In avionics,
when it is desired to keep a signal from radiating outside a cable (such
as Headphone/Microphone wiring), then the shield of only a single side
of the cable is terminated to a good grounding point. When instead it
is desired that the signal inside a cable be protected from EMI/RFI from
the outside, then the shields on both sides of the cable will be
 terminated to ground

We are usually trying to refrain from connecting shileding to ground on
both sides as a prevention of grounding loop.

 .

I theorize that only the SCL/SDA would need to be shielded (together in
a shielded twisted pair cable ?), Power and Ground may not need to be
 shielded.

We have never twisted two differnet signals together. What about
cross-talks? The only type of signal we are twisting together are for
example positive and negative leg of RS422 bus. Or A429 (you may be
familliar with).

This issue seems very similar to the SD Card access/GPS issue of the
earlier GTA02s, so I also wonder if a capacitor fix should be looked at
 in this case as well.

GPRS sharing = FR 'frozen' after some time

2011-06-05 Thread Hrabosh
Hi all,

I was trying to use my FR (QtMoko v35) to provide Internet connection
for my laptop using GPRS connection.

Unfortunatelly, after some time (one minute cca) connection to INternet
failed (no ping to anywhere from laptop) and FreeRunner was not
responging to any input from touchscreen.

 - although the phone seemed to be frozen, I was able to SSH into it and
killall qpe. After such qpe restart, I was able to connect to GPRS again
and everything worked for minute or so when I had to killall qpe again.

Not sure but it looked like the more traffic there was, the sooner it
got frozen.

Re: How to force current mode?

2011-05-31 Thread Hrabosh

It does not, I was just assuming because 1000 is not in the list of
parameters for om usb charger-limit command.

But if I try to set that by om usb charger-limit 1000 it does not fail
and executing 'om usb charger-limimt' gives back '1000' so it seems to
be OK.

I may doublecheck with car-charger connected to power supply with
current measurement.

Re: AtMoko v35 incoming SMS tone missing?

Well, seems that we have a problem.

There was a guy some time ago reporting having simmilar issue. He said

Do these two probles have something in common? Is there any recomemnded

I have fixed this bug long time ago. But maybe there is another one with same
 symptoms.

Check your SIM card connector. I had simmilar problems receiving SMS on
v34. When I installed v35 I was even not able to receive calls (The
person you are calling is not avail) ! Checking SIM connector and
cleaning/bending the pins helped !

* Imported SMS from the SIM card are put into Inbox, even SMS I sent
(expected them in Sent). I also cannot move them manually.

These problems can be hopefully fixed when we can use FSO. It would be nice
 if
someone could fix this also in qtopiacomm.

* As usual it is not possible to write SMS with the integrated
keyboard as it misses many characters (non-English locale).
I prepared months ago an ugly patch for this but could never test it
as I always fail to compile QtMoko (configure requires days,
some stuff (such as Qt) is build without need, ...). Maybe it's now
easier using the Debian packages but I really doubt that I will try
it again, maybe with the new GTA04.

I am quite sure some people had luck and compiled it. I think best way is
 according to this:

 https://github.com/radekp/qtmoko/blob/master/README

I can cross compile or even compile natively.

My last QtMoko installation died some days after the installation (v31
or v32) with an ubifs related error. Is there anything known about this
or should I expect it again?

We had problems with ubifs too. Gennady talked to ubifs devs and they would
like to see the kernel message and nandump so they could try too look into
 it.

It seems that ubifs is not as stable as jffs2 which was 100% perfect. Only
problem is that jffs2 cant do mmap and apt-get does not work without mmap.

Jffs2 will never do mmap (according to the main devel it's a lot of complex
work because of compression) so we have these options now:

 * live with bugged ubifs
 * patch apt-get so that it works without mmap
 * use the old trick with /var/cache/apt on tmpfs, but this has problems with
limited memory and bigger upates/upgrades might not work
 * use some other flash filesystem - yaffs seems but does not support
 compression,
i havent looked at logfs yet

 So any suggestions?

 Hi,
i have uploaded new qtmoko v33 images to sourceforge now [1]. They are still
called experimental, because a few things are still not perfect.

For more information about qtmoko please see [2][3].

Here is list of changes since v32:

 * new theme faenqo (cyberspirit)
 * qtmoko and it's applications are packaged as debian packages
 * compiled natively on ARM with debian toolchain
 * new web with applications and themes [4]
 * applications are now installed from web browser
 * new icon for installing qtmoko apps in Applications
 * you can easily install new themes in appearence settings
 * fixed usb mass storage script (thanks to Alfa21)
 * omhacks are installed as debian package from sid
 * qmplayer installs mencoder in debian
 * mencoder uses ac3 codec for audio
 * orange led brightness should be fixed (only in sources)
 * moved all apps from qtmoko-apps git to qtmoko git
 * updated docs for building and compiling

The list is quite short on how much of work it was.

Most of the effort was to package everything with debian package system. This
should be done now except for kernel which is on the list for next release.

For installing qtmoko with apt there is new line now in /etc/apt/sources.list:

 deb http://qtmoko.sourceforge.net/debian/ /

Applications and themes are right now not in that repo. They can be installed
from web browser from url below [4]. Applications are put in categories, they
have tags and screenshots for easy searching and navigation. Please let me
know if you have ideas or patches for improving this. The application web is
generated from .xml files with xsltproc and bash scripts so it should be
 quite
easy to change look or improve it.

Btw .deb packages for most of the apps are still building right now so please
be patient - i will upload them as soon as the build is finished.

Applications in this version can be still installed with old qtopia package
system, but i am going to disable this for next release if new packaging will
 be ok for you.

My plan for next version is to fix regression if you find any, package
 properly
also kernel and release it as stable.

Plans for future is FSO framework in qtmoko.

Don't forget to try new faenqo theme or use older themes (asthromod) which
were only in git until now. They are really nice.

 Thanks for supporting qtmoko

first.

I have also connected sine wave from generator to the WD8753 mic input
and cheched it on the WD8753's output with the oscilloscope. It seemes
that the audio codec chip gets into trouble (distortion, oscillations)
if the overall audio path has higher gain than 1. I'm going to write
more about this soon, with the scope pictures included (taken by my
  camera, I don't have DSO at home :-/ )

That would be interesting to see, but your summary seems wrong or perhaps
oversimplified. Distortion is inevitable if you overload an amp, and
oscillation isn't unusual immediately after overload. It isn't a function of
the overall path gain though. The wolfson has a chain of amps and volume
controls, and it only needs overload at one of them to introduce distortion.
Stick the gain too high on the first stage (mic input) and the distortion
won't go away no matter how far you turn down the gain on later stages. This
has been a long standing problem with the default volume settings.

Yes, it is oversimplified. It is obvious that you can't fix distortion
by lowering the gain of next-in-chain amplifier. You are just
controlling the volume of already distorted signal.

I put that picture from my scope with a short description to my web
page, here:

http://hnet.endofinternet.net/elektro/Freerunner/ALSA/sound_setting.html

I was very surprised how LOW I had to set the audio controls to get rid
of distortion:

Mic2: 0
Sidetone: 1

 ahoy,

zdar!

the flexible PCB for BT does seem to be able to crack very easily,
mine broke about a year ago. One day, i would love to sit down and fix
it but as it is quite tedious job under a microscope i have been
procrastinating this as much as i could. Besides, it helped me to stop
worrying about the FSO BT support and i also stopped spamming people
on public transport with tux images via BT ;))

I got dead motherboard with BT module on it from Golden Delicious. So I
replaced it earlier this week and everything seems to work. I was trying
to pair my FR with my car radio today while bored in traffic jam - so I
run the search procedure and found 4 mobile phones and 3 hands-free

I would appreciate two little improvements/changes.

- 3.5mm 3 way jack instead of 2.5mm 4 way.

- LEDs driven by external ICs, so they would be able to lit eve if FR is
in suspend. Im planning (- which means that it may not even
happen :-) ) to drive LEDs by I2C drivers, or to add some latch between
the LED and FR's processor.

 Hi All!

Here are some hardware suggestion for discussion:

 1) Possibility of IR RC5 receiver/transmitter

 2) Possibility of IRDA transceiver

 3) Possibility of a video-link? Use
touch-screen as a color matrix (2D) barcode video
transmitter - and the camera as a receiver (half
or full duplex). Let the link automatically adapt
to to half duplex, if you need to turn your
smartphone to establish the other half duplex
connection. The link should also adapt frame rate
and if the camera and/or screen is dirty - or the
link is through a dirty window. I have no idea
how fast the link can be as a function of
distance. The link should automatically adapt if
the video color matrix (2D) barcode is mirrored
in any way - or played backwards.

 4) Antenna diversity of (preferably pattern,
 space - or polarisation diversity):

 * GSM/UMTS? (receive diversity incl. external antenna).

 * 802.11(a)bg(n) (diversity) (W2CBW009Di: For
Dual Antenna application) Almost every laptop
 has diversity.

 * FM-receiver (receive diversity requires
2*Si4721 - uC selects the best signal (listen to
one - let the other turn on and scan when the
listen-signal has to low S/N ratio) - or you can
listen to one and record another).

 * GPS? (receive diversity including external antenna).

For FM-diversity you can use a 180 degree hybrid
(two loaded LC-circuits?) to separate common-mode
and differential-mode - for diversity - if three
space divided poles are available. I know that
there is a capacitance between ear-wires and
their ground, so I do not know, how well it will
work. Note that some impedance matching might be
 needed.

For VHF/FM the head-phone cable might be used.
The diversity might be implemented isolating
ground by a adequate inductor (100MHz parallel
LC-circuit) - and two high-pass filter from left
and right earphone non-ground wires - and the
 GTA04 itself as a kind of ground/third-wire.

Unfortunately there is no space in the GTA case. You have to get rid of the

I was trying to replace that 2.5mm by 3.5mm and found this one:

Bluetooth module

2011-01-20 Thread Hrabosh
Hi guys,

yesterday I opened my freerunner to check whether mine FR is affected by
R3004 issue [1].

It was, I put a piece of wire there instead of those two caps and volume
got better!

But ... when I was dismounting the phone, I dammaged the bluetooth
module. The module itself may be OK, but the flex cable is torn off.

Don't you have any idea where can I buy some spare?

Thanks, Zbynek

Red LED on when new SMS or missed call script

2011-01-16 Thread Hrabosh
Hi All,

I really liked when my old Simenes M65 turned on red LEDs on its side
when SMS was received or I had a missed call.

I was missing this on FR so I wrote a simple script to do that

I added:

CheckForMissed

to my /etc/rc.local to run it automatically when phone starts.

The only think I'm not happy about is that when the phone gets
suspended, all LEDs are switched off no matter what is in the control
files (sys/device/platform...).

Hope someone would find it usefull...

For me it was enough to use the following settings in NeoControl:

 Playback: 125
 Sidetone: 3
 Mic2: 1

I nearly threw away my phone before finding out these settings... But as
I read on the list here, it's extremely different from one phone to
another. I liked the following post of Al Johnson (which I think you'll
understand and makes you chuckle, too, reading your other posts as a
HW-engineer having frightened SW-engineers in the back...):

[Snipped all but the 3 important channels, and reordered for the route the

 }
 +30dB
 control.12 {
 value 7
 }
 +6dB
 control.5 {
 value 110
 }
 -11dB
 Total: +25dB

This is a ridiculous way to get that total gain, unless you want
distortion. That may be a fine goal on a guitar amp, but not on a phone.
For some reason it seems to be the recommendation , but don't ask me
why. To get the same signal level with much less chance of distortion
 try these:
Control 48
   value 2 (+24dB)
Control 12
   value 5 (0dB)
Control 5
   value 122 (+1dB)

QtMoko: Dangerous alarm issue

2011-01-09 Thread Hrabosh
Hello,

do not rely on QtMoko's alarm to wake you up :-)

I set the alarm and switched the phone off. When the time came the phone
switched itself on, the alarm bell was shown on the screen and the phone
was vibrating but with NO SOUND !!

If I did the same, but suspend (by short power button press) the phone
instead of switching off, everything was OK.

Any idea how to fix this?

BTW.. how do I choose the file to be played as alarm ringing?

I am having this fun already for 2 years, Freerunner is certainly best toy i

1/ USB Host is not working in v30, v31 (in v26 is). Dmesg says unable
to enumerate device. I was trying to connect USB flash drive, BT dongle
and USBtoRS232 converter (With PL2??something chip) - all these were
  working on v26.

New 2.6.34 has now 2 sysfs nodes that have to be used together for the
 desired
result. It seems that the sysfs path for second one has slightly changed. If
you edit /opt/qtmoko/bin/usb-host.sh it should now read:

 echo 0 /sys/devices/platform/s3c2440-i2c/i2c-0/0-0073/pcf50633-gpio.0/reg-
 fixed-voltage.2/gta02-pm-usbhost.0/power_on
 echo device /sys/devices/platform/s3c2410-ohci/usb_mode

Are you sure about echo 0 and echo device? Shoudln't echo 1 and
echo host be there instead?

 and /opt/qtmoko/bin/usb-device.sh:

 echo 0 /sys/devices/platform/s3c2440-i2c/i2c-0/0-0073/pcf50633-gpio.0/reg-
 fixed-voltage.2/gta02-pm-usbhost.0/power_on
 echo device /sys/devices/platform/s3c2410-ohci/usb_mode

OK, thank you ! I did changes according to what you wrote and according
to dmesg messages, FR is now able to detect the devices. See messages
that showed up after I connected my flash drive:

... and that's all. No partitions were detected, etc. If I connected
USBtoRS232 converter, FR detected it but device /dev/ttyUSB0 is not
generated. I have no idea what's wrong. Module for the converter is
present (pl2303) - when I load it manually (by modprobe), device ttyUSB0
appears, but can't be used. Stty complains about inapropriate ioctl for
device and echo whatever /dev/ttyUSB0 is not transmitting a byte.

I have also fixed this in git now, thanks for letting us know!

3/ Where am I to copy MP3 files to make MediaPlayer see them? I copied
  them to /media/card/Documents/audio/mpeg

You can use /media/card/Documents - all subdirs should be searched by qtmoko
 document system scanner.

Yes, now it works! Although even if I rescan the system, files that are
no longer on the uSD card are still listed in Documents.

4/ Does anyone know how to set FreeRunner to play music over bluetooth
audio stream? AFAIR it is called A2DP. Radio in my car is able to play
such stream so I'd like to use it.

A2DP support should work from GUI. I have already described it in v26
announce, anyway here is copy paste:

A2DP (bluetooth audio) support works too but with some glitches. You need
headset with A2DP support. After pairing press Supported services from
bluetooth device context menu. New button Connect audio (A2DP) should then
appear. Sometimes it fails to connect. For me it help putting headset in
pairing mode, restart phone and then the button works. If you make the
bluetooth audio device default it will work in all alsa programs, but expect
problems e.g. with GSM calls. If you dont make it default GSM will be ok.
However only QMplayer can detect it and use it now.

6/ IS there a way how to enter Czech letters using FR keyboard ? ... at
least in Navit? Street names in Navit are using czech letters and I'm
not able to enter their names without having such letters on the
  keyboard.

It should be possible and not very difficult to implement it. There is
 already
package for russian keyboard (in Settings-package management). After
installing it and switching language to Russian you can select it for input.
 Sources are here:

 https://github.com/radekp/qtmoko-apps/tree/master/keyboard-addons/keyboard-
 russian-abc

Please note that it's the finger frinedly keyboard [1] and russian letters
 will
 appear after pressing switch.

8/ Can I install ipk packages to QtMoko?

You can only use .deb (native debian packages) or .qpk (qtmoko package
system). Most of .deb apps are for X11 and you can use them with QX
application. I think all possible qpk should be available under Settings-
 Package management.

9/ People I call with are complaining about bad sound quality. Did it
  happen to any of you?

It depends what bad sound quality means.

There is problem with buzz which is hardware problem and must be fixed in
hardware. IIRC i have never had this problem but you might not be so lucky.
 It
can be fixed by soldering capacitor - you can find more details on wiki if
 you

not sure, make sure you set usb to host most in dev tools, if that's not it
maybe go to log level 8 and get some more detailed info about what's wrong?
You can do this in the kernel parameters in /boot/append or in QI just press
the power button after the second flash of the aux button

Hrabosh: I pressed the power button (a have v31 on the NAND memory, thus
not able to use /boot/append because Qi is not reading UBI FS .. right?)
and saw kernel messages scrolling down the screen- simmilar to what I
can see when my Linux computer is booting.

USB device (ethernet mode) works fine. If i switch the phone to USB host

appears:

[131.66] s3c2410: changing USB to host
[131.90] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2

tell these programs where are my MP3s stored?

Go to software packages and download the mp3 codec, then execute the file
 that
shows up in applications. Suddenly media player will read mp3s in ~/Documents
(qtmokos ~/ which is /home/root not the debian /root)

Hrabosh: It works! Thanks! But media player seems not to be able to play

QMplayer is playing fluently no matter what you do with the phone.

You can add debian unstabled repos and see if there is anything there, I
 would
 be very surprised if not...

Hrabosh: There was such option in some player I had in SHR distribution.
You could choose whether to play using spekares or BT headset. I'll try
to google something more ...

5/ I'm going to replace 2.5 audio socket in FR by 3.5 socket - so I
could connect my headphones directly to FR. Did anyone try so?

Please document if you do this! I've lost the second earphones I got for this

As to the keyboard: I really appreciate having arrow keys there (because
of command history in Terminal).

If you hit the very left key in the second row, another keys

What about replacing these by F1-F10 keys?

 Hi,
new stable qtmoko release v31 is now out. You can download
 images for SD card
and NAND flash from sourceforge [1] and sources from github
 [2].

QtMoko is distribution for Freerunner based on debian rootfs
 and qtopia phone
stack and GUI. For more info please see [3] and [4].

 Changes since previous version:

 - fixed invisible call button in finximod theme (Joif)
 - translated to French (Gregoire Juge)
 - updated Danish translation (Ole Carlsen)
 - better layout in docked keyboard
 - commented completion strip in docked keyboard
 - VT not switch to graphics which fixes X hang in
 VT_WAITACTIVE (Gennady+Me)
 - fix QX crash after pause/resume
 - using openssh-server instead of dropbear again

This is first stable release based on kernel 2.6.34. I think
 nearly all
regressions to andy-tracking 2.6.29 are fixed so i will tag
 last commit with
2.6.29 support and will merge 2.6.34 support in master.

Docked keyboard (the one suitable for terminal) is now much
 better. It has
same layout as in SHR, which means you will have cursor keys
 on main screen.
The completion strip was IMO quite useless and wasted only
 space so it's now
 disabled.

As for the VT fix (or hack ;-) it's now possible to use any X
 server with QX.
So you can install full xserver and use it instead of Xglamo
 which is default.

 So happy new year!

Hello guys,

I had been trying OM, SHR, Debian, Android, QtMoko and decided to stay

Although QtMoko seems quite usable for Freerunner, there are still some
points where I'd like to ask you for help. But I'm already using FR with
QtMoko as my primary phone and its doing well :-)

was able to find them on first scan, but only if there were no further
directories in /home/root/Documents/audio/mpeg. Is there a way how to
tell these programs where are my MP3s stored?

4/ Does anyone know how to set FreeRunner to play music over bluetooth
audio stream? AFAIR it is called A2DP. Radio in my car is able to play
such stream so I'd like to use it.

5/ I'm going to replace 2.5 audio socket in FR by 3.5 socket - so I
could connect my headphones directly to FR. Did anyone try so?

6/ IS there a way how to enter Czech letters using FR keyboard ? ... at
least in Navit? Street names in Navit are using czech letters and I'm
not able to enter their names without having such letters on the
keyboard.

7/ Can I use MP3 files as ringtones?

8/ Can I install ipk packages to QtMoko?

9/ People I call with are complaining about bad sound quality. Did it
happen to any of you?

Thanks for your time,
