OpenMoko mentioned on Networkworld
Hi all, Via Linuxtoday.com I found a slideshow trying to present the recent history of Linux for mobile devices. http://www.linuxtoday.com/upload/linux-for-mobile-a-visual-history-130724062005.html Take a peek at slide 6 of the slides and you'll notice a picture of the Neo1973 and some text about the project. http://www.networkworld.com/slideshow/112000/linux-for-mobile-a-visual-history.html#slide6 The slides mix up the Neo1973 and Freerunner. In addition, Openphoenux is totally omitted. Feel free to give comments on networkworld.com and/or linuxtoday.com. As such, we can get some additional visibility. FOSDEM 2012 - Presentation online
To all, Due to traffic jams on my way to Brussels I did not make it on time for our to FOSDEM presentation. The snow had something to do with it. But we shared the slide deck for review with all contributors, so people of Golden Delicious also had a golden copy ;-) Someone from Nikolaus' team took over, so the presentation went ahead as planned. FOSDEM 2012: Ready... set... GO!
Dear all, We've been working on the FOSDEM presentation with the people from Golden Delicious, QtMoko, SHR and Debian. The AoF part is also in, of course. The final review is done and we're all set to go. Our talk has moved from a lightning talk to a 30min presentation in the Open Mobile Devroom (building AW) starting at 12h00 till 12h30. See the schedule here: http://www.fosdem.org/2012/schedule/track/open_mobile_linux_devroom I'll be passing by the Golden Delicious stand before and after the talk. Fosdem 2012: Openmoko Freerunner Lightning talk accepted
Dear all, We have submitted a request to the FOSDEM team to have a lightning talk about the Openmoko Freerunner. I'm happy to announce the talk has been accepted and is currently part of the FOSDEM Lightning Talk schedule. http://www.fosdem.org/2012/news/accepted-lightningtalks It means we get a stage to show the status of the distros and give the GTA04 the attention it deserves. I'm working with Radek (QtMoko), Timo (Debian), Martin (SHR), Nikolaus (GTA04) as main contacts to prepare some input (key messages, status, roadmap, differentiator). The Android section will also be included. Keep your agenda open for Saturday 04/02 and meet us at FOSDEM. Let us show to the fellow FOSS fans that the open phone is alive and has a future through the GTA04. Re: Another so suitable for freeruner?
But if you wanna port Android onto the new OpenMoko. I'm sure GNUtoo will be pleased to do this too, as soon as he got a new OpenMoko. Guys, For those of you interested in running/building/improving Android on the Freerunner, check out http://code.google.com/p/android-on-freerunner/. Cupcake is stable and working on the Freerunner. We've recently received some patches which should have resolved issues with sound via Bluetooth (thanks to Zhang Yi). Froyo is still under construction. Ran and Jim are working on some patches to improve the Froyo branch. Cupcake and Froyo are now available in SD only or NAND installations (thanks to Christian and Ran). The project mailinglist can be found here: http://groups.google.com/group/android-on-freerunner. RE: Is Neo Freerunner a phone? (with Android)
I am afraid it is still draining the battery. I can use my FR for about 8~10 hours with Android - current featured release. It seams like the Dialer will do this, if left unclosed. I'm not sure. It seems you're doing something ugly wrong. I'm using it with SHR and its working just fine. Runtime: More then a day. If you have it in proper suspend, while not using it. The user is not doing anything wrong, Google is. This is because of how Android handles closing applications. When you close an app, it disappears from your desktop, but the application keeps running. This eventually results in running out of memory and wake-up interupts from suspend while in fact you don't have any app open (at least, that's what you think). This is broken by design. Blame Google. The community has developed tools to list all your running apps with the option to kill them individually. So there are ways to work around this. Just my two cents. I think at this point distributions' defaults should be towards A7 users, since all new users are anyway A7 users and A5/A6 owners by now are surely aware of the ALSA setting problematics. RE: new Android Cupcake release for Freerunner
Hi Neils, It's unfortunate that Koolu has gone unresponsive. I know maddog was at one point reading this list - if he still is, perhaps he can comment on the status of things. A question was raised on the Koolu forum asking for the plans with Android on the Freerunner. An email was sent to Brian, Jon and Marcelo to find out more. The same message was also posted to the mailing list hosted by Koolu. Nobody from Koolu's side responded. Makes it pretty obvious that it is not their priority to keep things going... The google code wiki is kinda sparse (understandable since it's so new), and the android sections on the openmoko wiki seem to be quite out of date. You're right and we already started organising ourselves to improve things. Is there a summary somewhere around what works and what doesn't, and how close it is to being usable as an 'every day' phone? That is actually a good idea to put this on the Wiki. I've seen other distros doing the same. Will take this up in our discussions about the Wiki pages. Thanks for your input! Feel free to contribute more or join the discussion group ;-) In any case, we'll keep you and everybody posted on news and updates. Niels. _ Hebben jij en je vrienden leuke foto's van jullie feestje? Torfinn Ingolfsen writes: Qi _will_ need to be improved until it is usable for end users, or it will fade away I really can't understand the desire to multi-boot. And btw the recent poll proved that most users use Qi IIRC. A clear evidence it's already usable for them. Perhaps because the Openmoko Wiki urges people to switch to Qi, with fact based argumentation, is one of the main reasons why so many people use it. Some of us are challenged by getting Qi to do what it is advertised to do. Technically, Qi allows multiboot, but it proves hard to invoke the behavior. new Android Cupcake release for Freerunner
Hi there, As some of you might know, it appears that Koolu is no longer working on migrating Android to Freerunner. The community has tried to contact the Koolu people to get some sense of direction (including Jon Mad Dog Hall), but no response. Because of the lack of direction, it was difficult to assess the risk of Koolu pulling the plug and thereby loosing the code (including community patches), mailinglist etc. The community therefore decided to start hosting the code and mailinglist. This was announced yesterday, September 20th. On top of this, the community immediately released their first release of Android Cupcake! Version 0.1 of Android Cupcake for the Freerunner is now available for download. For those of you who've already tried Android, it is a well functioning (and pollished!) distro for your Freerunner. Let's hope the project can keep and gain some momentum. If you wan to try and be part if it, everything is at your disposal. I'll also try to put this in the community updates. All details are in Jim Ancona's mail. Niels. Message by Jim Ancona: -- I'm glad to announce a new Android Cupcake release for Freerunner! It's basically a merge of the Koolu code with Michael Trimarchi's enhancements and a few bug fixes and cosmetic things I've added. You can download it at our new Google Code site: http://android-on-freerunner.googlecode.com/files/android-on-freerunner-cupcake-0.1.zip Installation instructions are the same as for the recent Koolu betas: - Unpack the files on to a FAT formatted SD card. - Insert card into the Freerunner, and boot from NOR menu (hold AUX key, then power) - Choose Boot from SD Card (FAT and ext2) The automated install process should begin. It installs the Qi bootloader, reboots, the kernel, reboots, then installs the system image. *NOTE:* This install process overwrites *everything* on the NAND inthe phone, including the bootloader. If this is not what you would like to do, please don't install this release! We'd love to have an SDcard installer, if someone would like to contribute it. The Google Code site includes a bug tracker. We've got a couple bugs added already. Please add any others you find. The code for the release is hosted at Gitorious, because Google Code doesn't support Git. The consensus of the discussions here seemed to be that we should have our own mailing list, so I've also created one at Google Groups. The URL to join it is below I'd really like this to become a real community project, so please help by contributing what you can. Not money, but bug reports (or even better, bug reports with patches), other code, or documentation. We have a wiki at the Google Code site. Anyone who would like to create content for it, please contact me and I'll add you to the project. I hope we can create a vibrant community around Android on Freerunner, and that you can help! Is there anything I could do about it except filing a bug for midori? Or is midori innocent and google does some evil hacks there to look nice on that damn iPhone I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself when sending the other user agents: The reason for suggesting the other two UserAgent strings is because while playing around with Android I've used gmail, facebook, hotmail etc. on the device and never noticed any problem with the screen resolution. So instead of pretending to be an iPhone, as you said, perhaps it could help pretending to be an Android phone? But since you tried this already, you can see the problem persists even when mimicking both Android user agents? In that case I would tend to believe it is a shortcoming in the Midori browser. Phonelog: missed call NULL name and number
Yesterday evening my FR woke up from suspend without doing anything else (no notification message, incoming call or SMS). I just watched the screen to see what was happening. After some idle time the it went back to suspend. This morning I noticed an entry in the phone log for missed calls with the same time and date from this wakeup event. The name and number are showing NULL. Two questions: - Why is the number/name equal to NULL? - Why didn't the phone do anything (ringing/vibrating, missed call notification) when apparently somebody tried to call? [SHR-U] - Refusing to suspend
Hi, For some reason the phone started refusing to suspend (vanilla SHR-U 08/08/2009). I tried a few times with the same result. The messages of suspending is displayed but then the enlightenment windows disappear and the phone just continues working in active mode. It did not have any issue with this before and nothing was changed to the settings. I did notice that the battery was running low... It's the only thing I can think of which is different from the other successful suspends. After a restart the phone suspends again. Before rebooting, I could see the following in dmesg: Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug) pm_op(): platform_pm_suspend+0x0/0x64 returns -16 PM: Device neo1973-pm-gsm.o failed to suspend: error -16 PM: Some devices failed to suspend Restarting tasks ... done. RE: [SHR] Setting regional codes
+ should be an alias to 00 if at the beggining of a number. This usage of + is so common and international that it would be IMHO dumb to intentionally ignore it. Not only that, but I intentionally store all my numbers in the + (usually +31...) format, since not every country has 00 as its international prefix! If you look at http://www.kropla.com/dialcode.htm, there is a whole list of IDD codes, and there are lots of 'em that aren't 00... I'm looking forward to having full number recognition, since I now regularly have to 'mentally lookup' a number when it's calling me... Christ van Willegen -- Adding my observations to the mix: I haven't changed any of the phone settings and store all my phone numbers in the international format (with '+' sign). http://lwn.net/Articles/350100/ Con Kolivas, who worked on desktop interactivity issues in the past before storming off in 2007, has posted a new scheduler called BFS. It was designed to be forward looking only, make the most of lower spec machines, and not scale to massive hardware. ie it is a desktop orientated scheduler, with extremely low latencies for excellent interactivity by design rather than 'calculated', with rigid fairness, nice priority distribution and extreme scalability within normal load levels. http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/bfs/bfs-faq.txt Reading the FAQ text and reactions on LWN it appears to me that the author has no intention whatsoever to merge this into the mainline kernel tree... _ Je hele online leven op één stek met Windows Live http://www.microsoft.com/belux/nl/windows/windowslive/default.aspx ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Reading the FAQ text and reactions on LWN it appears to me that the author has no intention whatsoever to merge this into the mainline kernel tree... BEcause his precedent work was not merged for years? I would not expect to be merged either ... I dont think he would opposed the merge. Hmm... In fact it's worse. He tried to get it merged but that did not work out (for a number of reasons, so it seems). But now he gave up the ambition and writes his code in such a way it will never get merged anyway. His own FAQ is very explicit about this: Why BFS? Because it's designed in such a way that mainline would never be interested in adopting it, which is how I like it. ... Sounds great. Holding the AUX button and powering up the FR, the NOR boot menu tells me I'm using U-Boot 1.3.2-moko12 (May 9 2008 - 10:28:48) Is this correct? Shouldn't this say it's Qi? The reason I'm asking is that whenever I boot the FR (using either simple power up, or choosing boot from the NOR menu) the FR is booting from NAND instead of booting from the ext2 SD Card. The boot sequence of the Qi is first to look for the SD partition for a bootable uImage before turning to NAND. So is my FR still using with u-boot? Printing the routes on my system I get the following list: Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface 192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 00 wlan0 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 usb0 link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 00 wlan0 default 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 wlan0 Trying to modify the route table with following command: route add -host 192.168.0.202 gw 192.168.0.200 I always get SIOCADDRT: Network is down So basically I'm currently stuck trying to connect to the Freerunner. My system is not using any firewalling rules (iptables --list shows no rules). Any ideas? Thanks, Niels. wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:5c:1a:c4:f9 inet addr:192.168.1.249 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::221:5cff:fe1a:c4f9/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:41334 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:31401 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:54936553 (54.9 MB) TX bytes:4458136 (4.4 MB) usb0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr f6:8e:f5:11:e4:13 inet addr:192.168.0.200 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::f48e:f5ff:fe11:e413/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:10 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:169 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1696 (1.6 KB) TX bytes:22003 (22.0 KB) _ Hebben jij en je vrienden leuke foto's van jullie feestje?
